As we won athletic victories On the baseball field of old, Still We work for dear old Roxbury, And the Dark Blue and the Gold. Although other schools are larger, And their names are better known, Still the school that we will favor Is the school that is our own. We will work for dear old Roxbury And Hoat her colors bold. For the colors of our High School Are the Dark Blue and the Gold. When the cares of life o'ertake us, Mingling fast our locks with gray, Should our dearest hopes betray us, False fortune fall away, Still we banish care and sadness At the memories of old, And recall those days of gladness 'Neath the Dark Blue and the Gold. ,ff v I I 4 ,,,, llnu y X M4575 F 5290! , , ' ' 6 Z Z fff,. ,. 1, if 7 V W 91? q'7,' T7 j 4 Yf,1QQ,Y W 'V'i' '-f 14 ' it, 2,,Q:?V':T11W 514- 4 ullff- '??,:?f v:m Q W VQL W ? 1 1 f+ 4. lii,ii, 1 ,,2? 7 all 4 A ' 1 ! The friends within its walls we've met, Thru out our lives, we'll never forget, For tho' true friends are forced apart Friendly bonds hold close the heart. Oh, Divine Wisdom, will you not show, The appointed road which We must go? For something still remains undone. For We must work and win for one Who has cherished us when dangers encounter- And we'll give all we can for our Alma Mater. Think us not, as hills of sand and clay, For rain alone cannot Wash us away. We are tempered into steel, hard and true, To conquer battle fields anew, And when our Alma Mater falls in need Call upon us, for we are loyal in deed. The day we thought we were going to get the Chicken Dinner. But the Seniors fooled us. The hare and hound chase over at Bill Reger's. And didn't the apples and hot dogs taste good? :Phd Dover-Roxbury football game. The day our class rings arrived and we weren't the only ones who liked them. Ask some of the Juniors about this matter. The morning that Pelly received the Lincoln Medal. The awful day when we came in our best bib and tucker ready to watch the birdie. But after all the groans, and moans it wasn't so bad, and when we re- ceived the proofs, we liked ourselves fairly well. Of course the photographer found it a pleasure to snap our charming countenances. The splendid work of Yank as cheerleader. The Darwin Debate. The Wearing of the Green Woofie's humorous remarks in American History Class. The day that John Reinhardt cracked that good joke. Whoa Napoleon! Probably the most conspicuous improvements are the draperies, which we were ahle to purchase through the assistance of the Woman's Club and funds raised by the motion picture corporation. The piano and stage furniture were also bought out of the proceeds from the movies. Local organizations may obtain the use of the auditorium for entertainments on any but Friday evening, Friday being the recognized day for school activities, either plays, debates or movies. Thus it can be seen that the auditorium is a benefit to the community, a beautiful, attractive room in which clean, whosesome amusement may be had. The auditorium is appreciated by the people of the community as well as hy the students and during the past three years nearly 75,000 people have been entertained here. Helfrz Bigelow '29. Forty-fifw ROXBURY ECHO 1927 TI-IE SCHOOL NURSE. 4-3:5 ISS Renager, the Roxbury Township school nurse, who has her headquar- E ters in the high school building, does much for the children of the com- 4-.- munity. Class room inspection is carried on in the respective class rooms every X 'i child being examined once every month and more frequently in case of an epidemic. During the month of February, for example, six hundred and fifty- seven children in the township were examined, a total of two thousand nine hundred and seventy-two re-examinations and re-inspections were also made and sixty-seven home visits were also made for school absentees during the month. llfleasurements and weights are made in the nurse's room. At the beginning of every school year each child is thoroughly and efliciently examined and the various defects are registered on cards which are sent home to the parents to act upon accordingly. A baby clinic is also established in the high school with Miss Renager presiding. An average of ten to thirteen mothers bring their babies every Tuesday afternoon from one to three o'clock and receive excellent instruction and advice concerning the child's health. All instruction is given free of charge. Due to the work of the township nurse much disease is prevented in the school and home which is, in turn, an aid to both town and school. Alma' Beasley '27. Fifty-I-wo ROXBURY ICCHQ 1027 FOOTBALL HICN the call was issued for football candidates in September a squad of Qul thirty responded. This squad consisted largely of inexperienced players. YL I hir. Shamhaugh and Captain Van Luvender worked hard to whip the . 'eff team into shape for the first contest. Iiight varsity men had graduated in june, leaving,, three hacksfield and five line vacancies. Although handicapped by warm weather the team worked hard. ln the first three games Roxbury defeated Butler and Rockaway and held Chatham to a score- less tie. The team reached it's highest point of success when, without a single suhsti- tuition, Roxhury's eleven defeated Dover. The team met it's first setback at the hands of Hoonton. Physical injuries greatly handicapped Roxhury's team. St. Hernards defeated them in a hard-fought ganie. The last two games of the season with VVharton and the Alumni were hoth won lay Roxbury. lllr. Shamhaugh may he hailed as the Rockne of Nlorris County. lfrom inex- perienced and untried material, he moulded a team which annexed the Class C Cham- pionship of Northern New tlersey and the Class H Championship of hlorris County, the first championships ever to he awarded to Roxbury. At the close of the season a hanquet was given to the members of the squad hy the followers of the team. CLOUDS BREAK AND STARS SHINE THRU Fifty-four The day was brisk and snappy, The air was sharp and cold, And many spectators were gathering Around that gridiron bowl. On one side of the gridiron The Dover rooters stood Waiting very patiently To see their team make good. Now looking on the other side We See the flags they hold, Not a single student trys to hide The dark blue and the gold. And in that dingy dressing-room Eleven boys stood aghast As Shambaugh's talk began with a boom And ended with a crash. Now each player bowed his head This great deed must be done, They'll carry me off that field dead If no victory we've won. They singly filed out to the field, Took their places one by one, Not an inch was a player going to yield The game had now begun! The pigskin was kicked by Dover And went spiraling thru the air, But a Roxbury man ran over And caught it fair and square. Roxbury's up on her twenty yard line Shifting, formation A, The pigskin was passed, straight and fine Now the runner speeds swiftly away. With a sharp thud and a groan The fifty yard line was reached, Both teams lined up in this center zone Not a single soul did speak. ROXBURY gECHO 1927 In their formation A once more But this time more compact, It had the strength of iron boar Which pushed old Dover back. A twenty yard gain now meant a goal And the signals were given in a loud clear tone, Diagonally a runner speeds across the bowl Carrying the pigskin over the goal-post zone. The game continued with great speed But neither team would yield, The Roxbury team was made of steel And Dover seemed congealed. The score was seven-zero, Leaving Roxbury in the lead. The first half was now over Closing half of that football deed. The Dover team was now in gloom As Roxbury rooters cheered, Roxbury again enters the dressing-room With the Coach close in the rear. His speech he had now begun This time worse than before, The Roxbury team grew small-They shrank As the Coach yelled more and more. Roxbury came out on the football field With red blood tingling in every vein, Not an inch would her players yield They now went like a hurricane. Now Roxbury ploughed, with main and might The line of Dover's defense, Dover was now a horrible sight And Roxbury had just commenced. The score was twenty-eight nothing Leaving Dover in a hopeless way While Roxbury carrying off the honors Was victor of the day. Guido Cagnoni '27. RCLXBURY ECHO 1927, BOYS' BASKETBALL 1 HE boys' basketball season started out with a rush and a roar. The varsity was well on its way to an unbeaten season when, after beating Dover, 1 seventeen to thirteen, Netcong nineteen to nineg Wharton, seventeen to sixteen, Rockaway, nineteen to fifteen: and St. Bernards, sixteen to fif- - M teen, they took a slump and fought three well contested games with W'hartong twenty-one to twenty-eight, Rockaway, fifteen to twenty-nine, and Dover, nineteen to twenty-seveng under the pall of defeat before they forged ahead hy winning a good victory from Newton, thirty-five to nineteen. This strong victory raised the school's hopes for the Whitney Cup , but the varsity was beaten by Chatham at Morristown by thirty-three to twenty-one. But the varsity fought on and won the final four games of the season, with Netcong, thirty-three to twenty- seveng St. Bernards, seventeen to fourteen, and the School Alumni, twenty-seven to ten. The future manager will have little or no trouble finding games for the 1028 season, as ex-manager Reger has five two-game contracts already signed. Baker was elected Captain for this coming season, and will have a job on his hands, helping Coach Shamhaugh discover a team out of new material as all the old varsity graduates this June. The lettermen from I5 ,V .44 t fag last year's team will have to work very hard in order to keep their posi- tions as the new men are ambitious and are striving to replace any of the veterans who ease up in their playing. The infield candidates include Baker, Obdyke, Emmett, R. Steelman, DeMarino, and Hoplerg while Parliment, Zeek, V. Steelman, Gerken, Pell, and Fitzherbert are working for the three outfield berths. Warner and Cagnoni are the outstanding catchers, and Captain Ammerman, Parks, and Canfield will endeavor to hold down the pitching assignments. The in- field positions are well fortified with veterans, but the outfield is suffering from a lack of veteran material, although there are several promising candidates who should be able to remedy that difiiculty. 'a , 1, V! llff'f9l-kfi f , C, ITHOUT doubt many of the former citizens within Roxbury's frame or QOAW brick walls looked forward eagerly to the 1920 ECHO, felt themselves ,Tk strangers as they found unfamiliar names and faces on the pages, antici- pated pleasant recollections with the hits of news about their former class- -'ensi mates, and were disappointed to find no lengthy lists to mull over. Only those who have tried desperately to make accurate the mention of present names, or present jobs, or present addresses can appreciate just what nightmares the alumni editor can endure and still live to hear someone shout, f'Say, 1 haven't been working for that duh of a company for a yearl You asked my sister about me? Oh! she never can remember where l aml Altho' l was one of the disappointed anticipators, I could not help thinking of that card index which simply would not stay up-to-date in information about the alumni. Several packs of cards have been added to it since I could recite the names in alphabetical order. The President suggested in the 1926 issue that someone write the history of the Alumni Association, or sketch the career of an eminently successful alumnus for alumnal, or contribute something about somebody. l commend him upon every suggestion. I wish someone had contributed something. Then l should not be trying to discover who has made a million or two in real estate in lwuskrat, or has disfovered gold in Ironia, or has flown over High Ledge, or has swum the length of Black River, or has invented a silencer for the trolley as it rattles down Blain Street. No press agent has sent all of us reviews of anyone's latest appearance on the stage. If l attempted to list the newest acquisitions in cars, someone would be sure to Htrade in his before the ECHO could return from the printers. l could be sure of the accuracy of such a news bulletin only if every member of every class graduated from Roxbury were present at a game or a dance or a busi- ness meeting-and such a time can never be. .lust the suggestion of such an occa- sion recalls the once daily familiar faces of associates in the old building or the new, Speaking for the increasingly large group of alumni who find it impossible to be present at the meetings, l know that the announcement of an alumni gather- mg always calls forth a hopeful inspection of the calendar. Altbo we realize that many of us are merely names to the present student body of Roxbury, our interest Sixty-four :T VROXBURY ECHO 1927 in their doings is not passive. Our pride in the progress of Roxbury is just as keen as it was when we were contributing in volume to the cheers. Even if there were only about forty of us in those faraway days, we were more than satisfied with the noise we could make. ' A member who can always be counted upon to give support more tangible than the spiritual support so freely promised answered my appeal for information about the activities of the Association for the year. In June the Class of 1926 was admitted to the Association at a dance in the Hercules Club House. During the Christmas season another dance was enjoyed on the same floor. The Varsity foot- ball team was made thankful by a victory over their elders on Thanksgiving Day. ln March the girls and the boys again Won the honors over the alumni on the basketball court. The oliicers for the present year are Carrell C. Bryant '16, presidentg Florence S. Harvey '13, vice-presidentg Carl McLaughlin '26, secretary, and Lewis F. E. Reger '20, treasurer. Now that I have come to the foot of the page, I shall close this brief accounting with greetings to those who have been alumni for just twenty years, to those who are about to join the ranks, and to those others who belong to all in-between years.
