Express 'Yourself Teams By Edgar Ward Boston's black communities have produced some of New England's finest atheletes. Jimmy Walker, Owen Wells, and Russ Lee are just a few of the young men that have strived to be among the best atheletes in the country. Roxbury Community College has strived to live up to this tradition. It boasts the only minority team in New England. The R.C,C. EXPRESS, as both teams are called, has just finished it's first organized season. Although efforts were made to develop an atheletic program when the college first opened, poor planning and lack of interest thwarted any progress. 'When the program was finally developed under the guidance of Mr. Willie Booker last year, the Express was on its way and rollingg ..,,......,.. fast. it will also interest you to know that Pres. Walter Smith. the then new president, was as in- strumental as Mr. Booker was in bringing an atheletic program to liuht at R F P . in its nrst season the hlxpress finished the year with an out- standing 15-3 record. The squad was comprised of the elite in basketball that Roxbury had to offer. This, coupled with the high caliber recruits specially im- ported from Atlanta, made that season one of the most memorable accomplishments of the 7445 school year. In view of the success of the first seasons record, Coach Booker made applications to the National Junior College Con- ference. Upon the teams ac- ceptance, the fruition of the only all minority team in New England came into existance. Another first that was made was the formation of a women's basketball team, as equally talentedas the mens team. Both teams had successful seasons this year. The men's team rounded out this season with a 19- -lrecord. and the women's with a 18.5 record. ,. .- 1 X .-3 --i g.igt.:f:-z,,xix:g:-g- Ts With, the internationality of the college goes an international taste in sports. So why not have a soccer team? We do. A revitalized interest arose in soccer this school year and lVlr. Booker rose to the occasion with a short but very sweet schedule for the brotherswho would rather kick than dribble. Five games were played and out of them the Express a la foot finished with a 4-1 record. The coaches and players at Roxbury Community College havea lot to be proud of. Those of us who have been to any of the games that these teams have played will probably agree that the Express has lived up to the tradition of the atheletic dynasty that lives in our community. The students here at R.C.C. should be just as proud to be represented by the young men and women who made this season a successful one, but let us not stop at being proud. As the only all minority teams in any league, support from the people that you are representing is an essential part of the game that helps when the last 'seconds of the game are ticking away. Let us not stop and be satisfied with havingonly a basketball and soccer team to display the talent that lies dormant in the lounges and hallways. If there is an in- terest in softball, let it be known. If there is an interest in tennis, let it be known. When the Express rolls for the 76-77 season there will be no stone left unturned by the throng of men and women that will dedicate their time and effort to making the atheletic programs at R.C,C. something viable and consistent with the proud heritage that those before them have left for us to bare. ---.-.--..-.-.1....
