De- mocracy is the voice of the people in all matters which influence their daily lives, homes, families, businesses, governments, and national security. It is vibrant and dynamic, always on die alert to safeguard the God-given inherent rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Always does it primarily stress the rights and priv- ileges of the individual and secondarily the integrity and well-being of the state. Never are the minorities merely a set of figures which can be erased from the national books at the idle whim of an individual. Never is one group better than another. Yes, democracy is freedom, but not wanton freedom. The petty tyrant who sacrifices the well-being of his fellow men in order to realize his self-centered goals is not tolerated. But democracy is freedom-freedom to question, to investigate, to ask why, and freedom to demand a satisfactory answer. It represents freedom to examine the evidence, form our own opinions and judgments, vote according to the dictates of our consciences and assess the product of these processes, all without fear. Democracy, therefore, is greatly dependent upon the mind, for it is the intelligence and will of the people that determine the course of the government. The American way of life represents this and much more. In fact, it is a living example of the principles of democracy. Everyone has the right to live where he chooses, work in whatever occupation he desires, and raise and educate a family in the manner he deems most suitable. Truly, then, America and its representative democracy speaks for itself as a great colossus beckoning to the humble masses of the world, the oppressed yearning to be free, and the victims of a government guided by hate, jealousy, and fear.
