Text from Pages 1 - 66 of the 1958 volume:

i SANDRA NESBITT RODNEY NESBITT In Memoriam Twice in the year of 1957 — once in May and once in October — the tragic news of a fatal highway accident left students and Faculty alike stunned and incredulous. First we lost little Nancy Mead, a favorite in the Fifth Grade where she was affection- ately known as Mousie; later, Sandra Nesbitt, an Eighth Grader, lively and friendly; Rodney, her brother, a handsome Freshman; and Paul Jenkins, a Sophomore, strong and athletic. We are a small school, our friendships close ones — and these were not statistics. These were our friends. Our year has been deeply saddened, but they will remain in our memories -- these friends of ours — forever dear, forever young. PAUL JENKINS NANCY MEAD 1 2 The 1958 Record Presented by the Senior Class of Roxbury Central School Roxbury, New York Editorial Small rural schools sometimes have the reputation of possessing very limited educational and social facilities; however, there are many people who feel that a small school is much more advantageous than a large one. A small school offers each student an equal chance - no matter what his financial, physical, or mental status may be. Each student receives as much Individual attention as he seeks. Students who are determined to get the best education possible are given excellent opportunities in a small school. A rural school makes the most of its excellent outdoor facilities. Every student is encouraged to use these natural endowments. The student body is under the influence of high social standards; therefore, it is likely to maintain a high code of ethics. Small schools tend to produce individuals who are able to face the future with an optimistic outlook. — Nancy Morse Pat Numann (Co-editors) Dedication She's quite a gal. My past is a long one because I have been in your country 203 years. My first owners were John and Mary Fortescue. When they came over here from England in 1754, they brought me. I can't remember much of the trip over except that it took a long time. The ship's hold was dark, and I could see nothing. Once in awhile I could hear a storm blowing, but that was all. The first house I lived in was a house in Boston with the Fortescue family. A few years after, I heard John talking to Mary about a thing he called the Stamp Act. He told her that the Colonies would revolt against England soon. Then some people came to the door to get John. They said they had heard a ship loaded with English tea was in the harbor and they were going to dump all of the tea into the harbor. Much later I heard this episode called the Boston Tea Party. Soon after this a great revolution started. British soldiers were sent to Boston and other parts of the Colonies to put down the revolution. John and Mary were forced to quarter 16 British soldiers. I remember the evenings they spent in my living room. John and Mary would retire to their rooms and the soldiers would start singing and drinking. They played cards late into the night and were all drunk by the time they went to bed. The next morning they would be in a terrible mood and holler at Mary and tell her to hurry and get their breakfast. This went on for a long time and then the soldiers came back one night. They were all terrified. I heard gun shots in the streets and then the soldiers went out the back. That was the last I ever saw of them. Thank God I The damage to the house was quite extensive, so I was sold. The people who bought me moved to a big cotton plantation in Georgia. Time went fast. Soon the Civil War was over and the South was a wreck. I was sold to a carpetbagger who sent me North to a family named Waverly. The North had changed because of the Industrial Revolution. New York changed a lot in the following years. The buildings got bigger and bigger. Soon every available spot was used for skyscrapers—as they are called. Not only above ground, but underneath also— changes were really taking place. Mr. Waverly talked about a new means of transportation called subways. He took a job digging tunnels for the subways, much against Mrs. Waverly's will. I'll never forget the day the tunnel caved in. It was the one Mr. Waverly was working in. Mrs. Waverly answered the phone—talked a minute and then fainted. Mr. Waverly and 150 other men were killed in that cave-in. New York was considered an ex- tremely dangerous place to work in during these times. Men fell from skyscrapers, were killed in cave-ins, and there was always the danger of having something fall on you when you were walking down the street. After Mr. Waverly's death, I was sold to a family in Kansas. I am still living there with that family and enjoy it here quite a bit. I don't see as much of the world around me, but I live quite a happy life. Here comes Judy, the teen-age daughter of the family I live with . She looks angry. NO! NO! Judy, don't throw that brush! 36 ACTIVITIES 37 Student Council Sylvia Lutz, Donna Gordon, Jane Weyl, Sylvia Hinkley, Carol Shafer, Judy Etts, Dora Fuller, Mr. Whltelols, Advisor; Steve Collins. The council acts as a clearinghouse for most, if not all, student activities. The aims and objectives of the Student Council are: To encourage the practice of good citizenship; to provide a medium for expression of student opinion; to provide a training ground for leadership; to provide a clearinghouse for most student activities; to interest students in school affairs; to promote the common good; to create better school spirit; and to develop high Ideals of personal conduct. 38 Ensemble Mr .
