Everybody possesses them and with them shape the world. A mother brushes away the tears from a tiny child's face. Although her hands are worn by sewing, cleaning, washing, and ironing for her family, her touch is gentle and soothing. A farmer's hands are tough and strong. He turns the soil, plants the seeds, and harvests the crops. His hands are creased by labor in the hayfield, barn, and in his garden. These lines are deep and will never be erased. These hands feed the nation. Thank God for theml A painter's hands have a touch of genius to them. All he needs is a brush and a piece of canvas. Life will spring forth from his blend of yellow, green, blue, red, and violet. The painter can convey an idea to us by one masterful stroke. A doctor's hands, as well as his mind, are educated skillfully. Pain and misery he tries to wash away as one would wash away a piece of dirt. By his gentle slap, a new-born baby struggles for his first breath of air. A musician's hands are something priceless. Enchanting melodies, blues, and symphonies float through the air from our television sets, record players, and radios. Music is beautiful; it fills that empty space in our lives. The musician's long and slender hands practice until timing is perfect. Every emotion that he feels travels from his mind through his fingers, and from them to us. The factory worker's hands are the backbone of our nation. Automobiles, air- planes, sewing machines, vacuun cleaners, glass, electrical equipment, and count- less other gadgets parade before his hands to be assembled. In wartime and in peacetime, day after day, these endless processions pass. The scientist's hands may be the most important of all in the realm of time. This man invents new drugs and vaccines to cure old diseases. He improves the most feared weapon in the world, the hydrogen bomb. Where will his hands stop? The nation's leaders hold unequaled power. The president sincerely signs his signature to a peace pact drawn up by the quarreling nations. The president firmly signs his signature to a declaration of war. These hands touch the lives of every American. You support him, and he represents you. He got there by pull- ing the lever on Election Day, when you voted for him. Your hands put him in office. Hands are a gift, a very special gift—God's gift. The sea Is Mis, and He made it, and Mis hands formed the dry land.
