The 1956 RECORD Presented by the SENIOR CLASS of ROXBURY CENTRAL SCHOOL Roxbury, New York We, the class of 1956, wish to dedicate this yearbook to Mr, Peter Pargell in appreciation of his help and understanding through our high school years 1 Board 0 dumizmz J.Sweatman, E.5nyder, R.Dorrance, G.Kel1y, R.Ives, D.More, Z.Travis, H.Cartwright DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT Zena R. Travis BOARD OF EDUCATION John C. Sweetman, President Ruth Ives Howard Cartwright Guy Kelly Donald More SUPERVISING PRINCIPALI Roderick C. Dorrance SCHOOL CLEB5 Esther Snyder SCHOOL TREASURER Mrs. Samuel More 2 Suddenly our graduation is upon us, and twelve wonderful years of school will soon come to a close. Our hesitating steps leading to the graduation plat- form are an important link in the chain of steps which began with those similar hesitating steps which brought us to school that first day. Those first steps were taken with caution, as we had many questions and misgivings concerning the new world opening before us. In time, we became accustomed to the mad whirl of events which was typical of our new lives. From the first day on, the chain of steps grew longer, as other important events presented themselves. Junior high, Regents, and the Junior Prom were only a few of the important links in this chain. Now, as we look back, we realize that we were very lucky to have taken these steps, and that we shall never regret any of them. With graduation, the chain will be complete, and we shall put it away for use in the future. This done, we shall start again on a completely new chain which will begin even before the echoes of our graduation steps fade. We can only hope that the future will hold as much for us as the last twelve years have given us. These new steps will not be entirely in the dark, as there will be guides here and there. But we know that we shall have to work for all we gain, and that some work will go unrewarded. However, if this new chain is as strong and successful as the one we are about to complete, we shall be able to look with pride upon any link in either one. jaaalw R.H.S. let us always be loyal, Let us all to your dear name be true, Give our all to your fame and your glory- Our strength and our love to you. As the sun sets all gold to the westward, There is never a doubt or a fear That dear Roxbury High is the best school- Alma Mater, we give thee our cheer. 3 -nl First row' P MacPherson W Crawford K Sha ' ' ' -----J ' ' 1 - ylor M. Mr. Bruno, our us the things that were to be expected of us during school. At first the bells were very confusing, but ourselves going from one class to another with great confidence. In the spring we had a bakesale and a dance to earn money. As our Sgphgmgrg year started, most of the polish of high school had worn off. This year we settled down to doing our homework and earning money for our Senior Trip. Eileen Nesbitt represented us on the J.V. cheerleading squad. Mr. Vought was our homeroom advisor for a few weeks. who left us before Christmas when Mr. Parnell joined the year we lost several of He was followed by Mrs. Lutz us from Pennsylvania. During our members. We had two bakesales and two dances for which we all worked hard. The last week of school we ordered our class rings, something we had all looked forward to during the year. In our lggigr-year we were all very happy to have our class rings arrive by October Nth. ome of us were not so fortunate and had to order our rings again. Diane joined Eileen on the Junior Varsity cheerleading squad and they helped in cheering for Lawrence, Karl and Jim who played on the team. In November we had a Spaghetti supper. Mrs. Parnell and some of our parents helped to make it a huge success. In January Roger Stepanek Joined us from Edison Vocational High School in Jamaica, New York., In February we all began to look forward to the Junior Prom. After much debating we decided on as our theme. The Prom was another success and although we didn't make much money we all seemed to have fun. Julie Ives was our queen and Karl Shafer was our king. Diane and Andrew were attendants. Doris Fuller left our class to become Mrs. Gary DuMond and Esther Ballard left us to work. Exams came along and we took them once again, hoping to be Seniors in the fall. . In September, most of the old gang reported back as Seniors. We didn't have any new faces, in fact we had lost 2 members. Andrew German Joined the paratroopers and Eileen Nesbitt bacame Mrs. Lynn Jenkins. We soon found out that our Senior year was not going to be all play and no work. By the time our Senior Play came around on November H, we had all become pretty good salesmen. The yearbook was our next undertaking. Our project for Christmas was a dance on Dec- ember 28th with Ernie Russ providing the music. Now we have our Senior Trip to washington, D.C., and New York City to look forward to! By June we all hope to hear NPomp and Circumstancesn while we proudly march up to receive our diplomas. wa... Y ---.W-v...-.W Dear Nakagawa, fizzjkkfgg CjyQlZ9 c:Q9lIlE51- igfEgrig,Nig5gOrk I was very pleased to get your name and to hear that you wished to write to a pen pal in America. I hope that this will be long and entertaining correspon- dence for both of us. I guess I should start by telling you about the town in which I live. It's a small village in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains in New York State. Roxbury is just little enough so that everyone knows everyone else. Peo- ple usually know a good deal of other people's business, too Csometimes even be- fore the people involvedl. The population is perhaps five hundred. There are- n't any major industries and there probably won't ever be any, as we like our town pretty much as it is and wouldn't want to see it changed. The majority of the people in Roxbury make their livings on dairy farms and most of the produce goes to New York City. Our county, Delaware County, is one of the leading milk-producing counties in all of New York State. In fact, right now it ig the leading one! The main amusements of the villagers are visiting each other, playing cards, clubs, reading, movies and television, skiing and skating in the winter, golf, swimming and tennis in the summer, and just relaxing and enjoying themselves the whole year round. Speaking of golf--incidentally, do you play?--you should see our golf course! It's long, hilly and beautiful! Some of the views seen from the higher spots are lovely, especially in the fall when the leaves start turning color, the air is so crystal clear and the sky so blue. Many's the golf ball I have sent winging its way through the woods because I was too busy admiring the scenery! To go into a little of Roxbury's history, it was founded in about 1730 by a Scotsman named John More and his wife, Betty. Some of their descendants are still living here. It is the birthplace of Jay Gould who made several million dollars in railroads, and also of John Burroughs who has written many, many vol- umes on the subject of Nature. Roxbury has four churches, the usual quota of clubs for its men, women and ' children, two hotels, a few stores and gas stations, and last but not least, the Central school. Our school is called a Central school because the children from the surrounding countryside are brought to it by buses. Children are taught there all the way from kindergarten through high school. Our clubs include ev- erything from Rotary International to the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts. Prac- tically everyone belongs to at least one of them. One thing that has always amazed me about Roxbury is the loveliness of the surrounding country. I know our mountains aren't the big and impressive kind with great craggy peaks. They're not spectacular at all, but they seem almost like friends. After all, if you climb all over a mountain and play on it when you are very young, by the time you are older it has come to mean a great deal to you. I have many places in which I played as a child for which I will always have a warm place in my memory, little nooks and crannies that were all my own. Roxbury in the four seasons of the year is almost four different towns. In the spring you get a feeling of the town awakening, people housecleaning, and children jubilantly shedding heavy winter coats. In the summer, life in Rox- bury is very peaceful and serene. You can dream the whole season away, listen- ing to the sound of doors slamming and people calling their children and dogs far down the street, and the hum of insects on the air. Autumn is different. The mountain sides are of burning scarlet or intense yellow, the smell of burning leaves is on the crisp fall air and Roxbury seems to be preparing itself for the long winter. In the winter, Roxbury is almost like something you might find on a Christ- mas card--windows casting their yellow light on the snow, rosy-cheeked children skating on glassy ponds, and soft snow drifting silently down. Well, enough of Roxbury. Write and tell me about your hometown. I'll be waiting to hear from you. Sincerely, Diana Collins 30 -4111 WR 1 ' s if V main. .. f X - I I ' , 23511512 ,III11111 11111 -gawmwggm, 1 ..... .11 A, X F ..-5251 -u 1 N f f f4 - ' --:-'fb-W1-. , 1' HW 'Mau' .. 1 ff ' 'W WW W Z1 4 , hi' - :.-::::::::.
