READI G CL B ESSAY SO LITTLE TIME It was a cold winter day during the Second World War, on a small island in the Pacific. The Japanese soldiers had just landed on the American-held island, and they were closing in on a small American patrol which was on duty. Bill, a radio technician in the patrol, was trying to repair his radio which had been hit by a bullet and was broken, there was so little time to fix the radio. The enemy was so close that the small patrol could hear their movements. The enemy opened fire and the patrol realized that they were surrounded and knew that they could not drive the enemy offg they needed help immediately Bill, the Marine's radio man, was working frantically on the loud speaker that had been broken by the stray bullet. There were a few stray shots fired by the patrol, but it was hard for them to spot the enemy forces which had dug in. The patrol was going to make it a battle as long as they had men, ammunition, and food supplies, and they hoped that they could get the radio repaired to get in touch with their home base, so reinforcements could get them out of the trap which was closing slowly around them. Then the enemy tried to rush them but were driven back, with a few killed and wounded. This gave Bill a little more time to do the repairs. There was more than the fact that there was so little time that faced Bill. There was the fact that they all might be killed and that they might never see home again. So with these thoughts in mind, Bill worked harder than he had ever worked before. Then suddenly he heard bugles blowing and realized that by some miracle, they were going to be rescued. Later they found out that they had been trailed by a group of Marines who were sent out as an emergency patrol after the enemy had landed. The enemy was driven off, and immediately the patrol began to celebrate its good luck. They still realized that they had so little time to live, but had survived by a miracle. The worn out patrol was safely escorted back to its base. -----Marvin Rose 21
