CLASS ADVI OR TO THE FORTY-NINERS: My very best wishes and congratulations to each member of the graduating class. Almost six years ago you came to this school with a desire to learn, but facing a long road of uncertainty. You persevered and along with your formal education you learned many of the principles of life that will always be guiding lights on the uncertain seas of life. You were imbued with ideals, voiced and inculcated by men and women who understood your needs and wants. The influence of your high school days has left an everlasting impression in your minds. The time has now come when we must sever the relationship so closely established during your sojourn here. Each one will embark on his or her individual career in life. Across the path of the future will be strewn many obstacles, some serving as stepping stones to a higher planeqothers as stumbling blocks. Whatever we shall undertake, let us always bear in mind the fond memories and associations centered around our Alma Mater, ever- lastingly strengthened in some measure by the knowledge and principles we have learned here. May We all face the future as a new adventureg with determination, courage, kindness, courtesy and consideration and faith in God. Our sincere friend and administrator, Dr. Luther F. Waidelich, whom we wish to thank very much for his kind help and guidance through these four years. OUR PRI CIPAL You are the members of the Twenty-fifth Anniversary Class. Frequently during this year, you have thought about the past history of our school. Now as you leave, we know that each one of you is concerned about the future. I hope your graduation in this historic year of our school will be a real challenge to your development in character and citizenship. Your school throughout these years has always stressed the development of good habits and good character. You were shown ideals of desirable human relationships. We hope you may always reflect these qualities in your lives. We shall count upon your devotion and loyalty to your Alma Mater. May the next quarter of a century in the history of this school be known as HTHE GOLDEN ERA. We hope your lives may be bright and happy during these coming days. in l 1 UR Roxsonouou Hum Scnoox, CHARLES GAL? i wen .ma by zmcnmgn .ug Oh. We were indeed fortunate in securing Mr. Harvey as sponsor. Class Officers Elected This was one of the highlights of the first half of our Junior Term. Our confidence in Ted Howitz was strong enough to elect him president. The V ice-Presidency was held by Arthur Faulk. The secretary was Eleanor Spano and the treas- urer was Richard Hague. The Waltz Dream On December 12, 13, 14, of 1947, one of the most vivid musical shows Roxborough has ever presented was given in our auditorium. The excellent talent of many members of the 11th grade made this possible. The Fall Daze On November 7, 1947, the 49'ers gave their first dance in the Girls' Gym. This was both a financial and social success. Stanley Koch dressed as the coy maid and Ann Hait as his handsome suitor contributed to the entertain- ment. First Members of lhe Honor Society In October, an Honor Society assembly was given. The first members to be inducted from the 11th grade were Sarah Virkler, Arthur Faulk, and Peggy Schultz. It wasn't easy for these students to achieve this hard earned goal, but it certainly proved worth while in the end. The Junior Prom On January 16, 1948, all our loyal lads and lassies gathered at the Green Valley Country Club with one purpose in mind, that of making this prom a memorable event. And we surely accomplished what we set out to do, for even the dubious critics had to admit that it was the most successful junior Prom in a long time. Music was provided by those able-bodied musicians, Simmers' Esquires, and we enjoyed the dancing until one o'clock. Then we left for Dons, ttHot Shoppes, or any of our other favorite after prom spots. The majority of us didn't get home until the early hours of Saturday morning. But one thought prevailed in all of our minds, this being that we would remember this joyous evening for many years to come. 11B CLASS OFFICERS REMAIN THE SAME In the beginning of our 11B term, we were so well satisfied with our efficient officers that we decided to place our trust in them for another term. This was quite a compliment for Ted, Arthur, Spinny, and Dick, for it isn't often that a class has so much confidence in their officers that they don't think it necessary to hold an- other election. The Leap Year Leap On March 12, we again exercised our so-called talents and engaged in a dance in the Girls, Trap. In many of the dances the girls asked the fel- lows for the honors, so you can see it was ap- propriately named. The floaters also carried out the idea as they were faces of pretty little girls with chocolate kisses fastened over their lips. Most of the class attended and joined in the fun until 4:30. Then we gathered up our books and went on our ways with another hit dance to our credit. Seven 49'ers Join Honor Society The Honor Society claimed seven members of our class in an impressive assembly in March. The students included Eleanor Spano, Irene Nygren, Ted Brownworth, Charlotte Saylor, and Corrinne Vergari. These students lived up to the high standards set for them in scholarship and participation in extra curricular activities. We were extremely proud of them all. Dear Ruth On April 6, 7, 8 of 1948, Roxborough presented Dear Ruth in the school auditorium. The mem- bers of our class certainly deserved a lot of credit for the long hours of practicing they put in. This show was acclaimed by all as a humor- ous, inspiring comedy, and we have a lot of our 49'ers to thank for it. Sport Sideline.: On May 26, Arthur Faulk won the Broad Jump City Championship for the second time. This was quite a credit to the school and also to us. Our luck was good this term and although competition was keen, Roxborough's Golf Team came through with the City Championship. We proudly claimed Bill Raup and Bob Griffith as active players of this undefeated team. Delaware Boat Ride One bright Thursday afternoon in the spring we met at the Chestnut Street Wharf to'board a. boat going down the Delaware. We had an exciting and adventurous time and by the time we had to leave, we'were willing to go to the peace and quietness of our homes. 12A CLASS OFFICERS ELECTED The 49'ers elected Ted Howitz to lead us through our last year's trials and tribulations. Another office of equal responsibility was the office of vice-president which was held by Jean Gildea. The other officers who were elected to assist in this big job of organization were Eleanor Spano as Secretary, and Donna Donaldson as Treasurer. The Barretts of Wimpole Street On December 2, 3, 4 of 1943, Roxborough presented one of the most moving plays in the history of the school. Outstanding talent was found among our 49'erS. ee: QC' .r- XXX Mu mi- 7- 'Y X 94: 1 f X 4 rear ?7 vi if' 'We 'map Var Q21 C JOH' Leap Year Leap Dance Committee Junior Prom Committee V M A- f5gTlaU V Scene of our first social success, the Junior Prom it L Q -wow ns 5 Rn Eh! It proved to be a huge success, and a good time was had by all. Honor Society New members from our class to join the Honor Society were Doris Turner and Barbara La Penta. Sports Roxborough turned in a fine record for foot- ball this fall. The team missed first place by losing only one game. We were extremely proud of 49'ers Bob Griffith and jim Homewood, who were co-captains. Others from our class were Joe Ciccolone, Frank Rea-le, Al Labrusciano, Dick Michael, and Dick Hague. Soccer This year also proved successful for the soccer team. Under the leadership of Mr. Binns it made its first appearance in the first team league. Players representing our class were Ted Brown- worth, Herb Blair, Eugene Kholes, Bob Bell, Bob Enslin and Jack Beecroft. 12B THE LAST POW WOW Our last term finally arrived and we topped it off by giving a bang-up dance in the Girls' Wigwam. The big feature of the after- noon was the music. This was supplied by the Roxborough Royalists under the direction of Bud Rick featuring Frank Reale on the trumpet and Al Martinez on trombone The Senior Prom On April 29, at the Ross House, we gave our last prom. It was a typical spring evening. The girls looked exceptionally pretty, and with the glitter of the gowns, tuxedos, and flowers, it was a very impressive sight. It will be a long time before the memory of this evening fades from our minds. Banquet Our banquet was held at McCallister's on June 11. We all sat at tables with our friends and heard speeches from Mr. Harvey and Mr. Miller. We then presented the classis present to Mr. Harvey. After enjoying the food and enter- tainment provided by our classmates, we found that it was time to leave. We were happy and just a little sad as we left, for we realized that our school days were coming ever closer to an end. Class Trip On June 3, all the seniors were spruced up, waiting for the train to leave North Philadelphia for New Jersey. Of course there were a few who straggled in just in time before the train pulled out of the station. After much chaos and confusion, Mr. Harvey and Ted heaved a sigh of relief as the train pulled out and everyone was accounted for. A few restless students strolled up and down the aisle looking for their friends and giving the train the Honce overfl A few songs here and there added to the noisy atmosphere. The most serious minded were absorbed in the scenery. The Delaware was crossed, and before we knew it, we were at the station in Jersey City. It was just a stone's throw from the train to the chartered boat, U.S.S. Sandy Hook, that was to take us up the Hudson. We started our smooth sailing down the bay, passed the Statue of Liberty, Governorls Island, Ellis Island, and then went up the East River to 23rd Street where the steamer turns about for West Point. We sailed up the spacious Hud- son, and got a peek at New York's Ubillion dol- lar skyline. After we glided under the George Washington Bridge, we saw for a stretch of twenty-five miles the Palisades, small towns and counties. At Ossining, the graystone walls of Sing Sing Prison peered down on us. Soon we glanced up at Bear Mountain, impressive and glorious in its rugged hills. More sailing and soon Bear Mountain Bridge came to view. We disembarked at Bear Mountain. While we were there we took part in many sports. Swimming, rowing and basketball were the chief pastimes. Time passed very quickly for we were having such a. pleasant time. A picnic din- ner was followed by last minute rides on the amusements. But all good things must come to an end. Soon we were sailing away from Bear Mountain with in our minds happy thoughts long to be remembered. 5 :mess -594 4949 VQXG wnnv 7 Q f-xt' iz K' p,dioS pndou -la Amigos 949 'S-grfbo 0 YE505 NV I mtl Gtr s W xxxx Hagen 10 N IZA and 12B Dance Committee l i '5 i'-thaw gy,gpi.lU.....-.- lil! .rm :usa :ml inn Z . 2:15 :ur Q Slow boat to Bear Mountain ruunh 'n'l rf 1 'U 2 X A 5.3 TICK-TICK 8, ,lf Q if li 'Q CRW ROLL HON ORABLE ON ES HLVR R Y!
