Administration Administration The Person County Board of Education: Dr. C. Forsyth, Mrs. V. Dawes, Mr. B. Gentry, Mrs. P. Noell, Mr. J. Winslow. With the assistance of the Roxboro High School Board and the Board of Education, Walter Rogers, school superin¬ tendent, coordinates school activities. Mr. Thomas Brown, R.H.S. principal, is aided by the new assistant principal, Mr. Willie Gadison. Other office col¬ leagues are Mrs. Elizabeth Stewart and Mrs. Carolyn Pur- year. Our Board of Education in action! 12 Mr. Willie Gadison is welcomed as our new assistant principal this year. 13 Mrs. Carolyn Puryear and Mrs. Elizabeth Stewart are con¬ stantly working together to keep up our school records. Bus Drivers Bus drivers are as follows: T. Fox, B. Crumpton, D. Oliver, D. Solomon, L. Newton, V. Denny, J. Martin, W. Adcock, J. Rice, G. Watson, F. Carver, S. Carver, B. Bowes, J. Montgomery, S. Rogers, L. Lawson, H. Long, T. Long, R. Epps, R. Strange, L. Clayton, T.C. Davis, C. Jones, C. Compton, R. Long, E. Gentry, L. Gentry, D. Oakley, R. Coleman, S. Smith. Mrs. Mamie Taylor, head dietician, C. Walker, E. Brown, G. Burton, C. Cameron, L. Humphries. R.H.S. cafeteria staff are F. to B 14 and Cafeteria Staff Mrs. V. Singleton, RHS cafeteria cashier, handles much money. f Mrs. Mamie Taylor our new dietician, along with the help of the other cafeteria workers, plans our daily meals. The school custodians work hard to keep our school spic and span. Many students are dependent on the bus driver to deliver them to and from school in all kinds of weather. RHS is what these people make it through their laborious work. Is this any way for Seniors to act in the lunchroom? 15 Putting away trays is only part of Sandra Wagstaff’s job in the cafeteria. 16 The Annual Staff was honored to have Mrs. Patrica Gilliland as its new sponsor this year. Constituting our English Department are Mrs. Patrica Gilliland, Mrs. Florence Johnston, Mrs. Jackie Bohanon, Mrs. Rachel Brown, Mrs. Darcus Woody, Mrs. Wilma Bryant, Mrs. Judy Cannon, and Mr. James Shelley. These teachers try their best to teach students correct grammar, effective writing and better communication. Freshmen refresh their memories as they study gram¬ mar while sophomores focus their thoughts to Shake¬ spearian plays. Juniors seize famous American authors and seniors emerge into classics and themes. Mrs. Florence Johnston, our Rocketeer sponsor, also teaches Jour¬ nalism. Giving someone the eye are English teachers: L. to R., M. Maguire, J. Shelley, F. Johnston, D. Woody, J. Bohanon, J. Cannon. Seated: L. to R., P. Gilliland, R. Brown, W. Byrant. 17 Foreign This is why Joey Stevens likes Mrs. Walker’s French class. Chris Teague, Martin Vernon, Jimmy Wade, and Jimmy Weaver engage in a debate in Public Speaking. One of the many RHS electives includes three years of French. Mrs. Phylhs Walker, Miss Phyllis Parham and Mr. Auburn King stress the importance of oral comprehension intonation and grammar. First year students learn the basics of French. Students taking French II begin to use French while French III brings out the French background for further study. Mrs. Mildred Nichols continues to teach Latin as she has for many years. She teaches her students to speak Latin with dignity in the same manner in which she teaches her public speaking class. Even with Public Speaking and Latin, Mrs. Mildred Nichols finds time to do some reading. 18 Language RHS French Department in action: L. to R: P. Parham, A. King, P. Walker. Miss Jones just doesn’t know what to do with Mr. King’s students. 19 Examining Uncle Sam are history teachers: L. to R.: D. Delp, D. Raney, P. Perkins, M. Elliott Sophomore Darrell Carver uses most of his leisure time to read his World History. 20 Ricky Cothran and Bayard Crumpton find out that Miss Raney’s history class can really be an adventure when they get kicked out! mmm Coach Davis is a part of RHS History Department, too. Social Studies World History, Civics, United States History, Eco¬ nomics, Sociology, and Democracy in Action are taught by five RHS teachers. Making up our History Department are Miss Mary Alice Elliott, Miss Dale Raney, Mrs. Patsy Perkins, Mrs. Doris Delp, and Mr. Reid Davis. Their students have plenty of outside class work such as piojects and research papers, reading books, and case studies. Mr. Briggs, our History student teacher, gives rough assignments. William Snipes hides his face. 21 Elna Moore learns all about her world in World History. Mathematics Donald Wilson looks bewildered at Randy Wrenn’s Algebra II problem. 22 . 1.1 ' Observing Mrs. Pollock as center are Math teachers: M. Hester, C. Johnson, A. Duncan, S. Featherston, W. Gadison. Algebra I II, General Math, Geometry, and Advanced Math are part of the offered curriculum at RHS. Mrs. Margaret Hester, Mrs. Rosemary Pollock, Miss Sandra Featherston, Mrs. Annabelle Duncan, Mr. Clayton Johnson and Mr. Willie Gadison are the teachers of the Mathematics Department. Through formulas, theorems, and proofs, students learn to increase their mathematical ability. They strive for perfection and logical reasoning. Their mathematical knowledge will be necessary through¬ out their lives in today’s world of numbers. 23 Science Our science-minded teachers are L. to R.: G. Terry, M. Edens, N. Hamlet, C. Newell. Is this a mixture or a solution? 24 . Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics are taught by Mrs. Nell Hamlet, Mrs. Corrine Newell, Mrs. Geraldine Terry, Mrs. Mary Frances Edens, and Mr. James Edens. These teachers point out the living and non-living ele¬ ments of our environment and probe into the aspects of science. Student knowledge is increased by insect and leaf pro¬ jects, yearly projects, films, and laboratory experiments. 25 Debbie Thomas and Donald Wilson seem to agree; the best part about Chemistry is labs. Band SCHQQ HiBH Mr. Mike Cannon finds joy in directing the marvelous RHS Band. This can’t be the Wolf Patrol in action! 26 Chorus Performing locally and in school activities, RHS Con¬ solidated Band is rated high in performance and quality of music. Mr. Mike Cannon directs this miraculous band. RHS has several choral groups directed by Mrs. Mary Earle Berger. The Prep Chorus, Rocket Chorale, and Concert Choir participate in concerts and attend workshops and festivals during the year. Mrs. Berger finds satisfaction in her Choral Department. Like these students, many have an enjoyable time in chorus. 27 Under the direction of the creative Mr. John Bell, many students learn to express and discover themselves in art. They enjoy oil paintings, sketching, clay modeling, abstracts, and tapestries. fl ■ .-S ' ” Leigh Dickens paints in Art. There is something for everyone in Mr. Bell’s class. 28 Library Science Head Librarian, Mrs. Ruby Hester, helps our library assistant, Mrs. Mary Patterson, identify cards and books. Head Librarian, Ruby Hester, and colleagues, Mrs. Mary Patterson, and Mrs. Grace Clayton are willing to help any student or teacher find what they need. They work to keep an organized and complete library. Our assistant librarian, Mrs. Grace Clayton, works in the card catalog. 29 Commercial It takes cool teachers like Miss Key and Mrs. Hawkins to teach a cool subject like Typing. Emma Long does much work at the black- Mr. Horton keeps busy preparing many Shorthand assignments, board in Shorthand. 30 Faye Guill finds erasing is a big part of typing. Ray Harris finds there is a lot of work involved in Business Math. Even Tommy Humphries finds Typing I a joy! Mrs. Nadine Hawkins, Miss Gertrude Holt, Paulette Key, and Mr. Upton Horton make up the commercial de¬ partment. Through courses in Typing I and II, Shorthand, and Business Math, students learn to co-operate with the business world. 31 Guidance Among the many duties of Mrs. Elsie Harris are admin¬ istering tests, filling out transcripts, and helping students to choose colleges or careers wisely. This year she was aided by Mrs. Janie Thaxton, and Mrs. Helma Oakley. Mrs. Helma Oakley, our guidance assistant, finds much work to do in the Counseling Office. Mrs. Janie Thaxton and Mrs. Elsie Harris work together as our Guidance Counselors. Linda Thompson finds the college catalogs very helpful in making her college choice. 32 31 ' ' As the Dean of Boys, Mr. Horton must sign many excuses. Deans 33 Vocational Vocational teachers are L. to R.: E. Rogers, W. Hawkins, J. Woody, and E. Brittain. Would you like to have these boys wire your house? Tim Gentry is found working diligently in Machine Shop. 34 Carpentry, Bricklaying, Machine Shop, and Drafting. They help the students to better themselves for the future without a college education. Mr. Earl Rogers and Mr. Waldo Hawkins are Agri¬ culture teachers. They help students in the field of farm¬ ing. Mr. Hawkins also has an Ornamental Horticulture class. Girls learn how to plant and raise flowers. Mr. Earle Johnson prepares students in Marketing and Distributive Education for the business world. He helps students to choose jobs and to keep them. Wonder if Mr. Brittain is about to be mugged Mr. Earl Brittain, Mr. Calvin Clack, Mr. Harold Mc¬ Millan, Mr. Jesse Barrett, and Mr. James Woody make up Mr. Earle Johnson takes a break between his class lectures. the Vocational Department. The courses are Agriculture, Vince Yarboro, Thomas Drumwright, Chris Sorenson, and Bobby Johnson work on many engines in Internal Combustion. 35 Mr. Jesse Barrett and Mr. Harold McMillan teach vocational stu¬ dents the functions and operations of engines and motors. Coach Dixon is found outside all year round. Physical Ed. Mrs. Virginia Brown and Mr. Larry Dixon help the stu¬ dents to exercise daily. They teach different exercises and students learn the various body systems and functions. The way Mrs. Brown is looking, someone must have goofed! These boys look as though they are enjoying Physical Ed. 36 Our Home Economics Department teachers, Mrs. Carver and Mrs. McWhorter, give each other pointers about sewing. Home Ec. Mrs. Sue McWhorter and Mrs. Billie Carver prepare stu¬ dents for the domestic days ahead in the home. Students are taught to sew, cook, and freeze food, and to decorate homes. Wonder what Diane Long is after! These girls examine the rooms they made in Home Economics. 37 Meeting at lockers ... playing pranks.. . walking the halls. .. having labs. . . making reports.. . doing projects studying for test and exams . .. looking forward to school activities are part of what R.H.S. is. It gives a greater number of girls the chance to participate in sports of their choice. The GAA promotes interest in volley bah, basketball, tennis , softball, and ping pong. Roxboro High School has about eight intramural teams with twelve girls in each team. They start practice in January and end the tournament in April. This year’s tourna¬ ment winner was “Kirby’s Klown’s” headed by Joan Kirby. GAA Officers, L. Lockhart, M. Shotwell, S. Brandon, J. Munday, B. Winstead. GAA member, Debbie Moore, takes an energetic jump to put the ball back over the net. GAA members, D. Moore and S. Bradsher, vigorously battle a game of ping pong. 216 Coaches Jim Edens, R.H.S.’s athletic director is more familiar with the problems that a coach faces than any of the rest. Even with all his responsibilities he takes time out to shape an outstanding freshman football team and even comes through to give a few helpful “hints” to the golf team. Reid Davis, R.H.S.’s own basketball coach, is very enthusiastic and active when it comes to playing a game of basketball. The first thing a R.H.S. student is most likely to encounter upon entering the gym is Reid Davis. It is very doubtful that any other school has a coach as enthusiastic and as active as our own Coach Davis. The varsity basketball, football, and track teams would be the first to agree that Reid Davis is tops. At the mention of football, Roxboro High School quickly becomes alert as one considers the successfulness of the varsity football team; Coach Larry Dixon’s hard work and determination has prevailed. R.H.S. school spirit has soared under the influence of his helping hand in track, freshman basketball and most of all, shaping a fine football team that Roxboro High is proud to claim as their own. He also exercises daily as Physical Education teacher. Mrs. Virginia Brown really exercises her girls daily trying to get those “extra pounds” off. Different games and exercises are taught along with Health. Students also learn that their body needs to function properly. She also sponsors the great R.H.S. GAA team each year. Those that are in need of guidance on the football field will certainly tell you that Clayton Johnson is the one to see. Those participating in junior varsity football and basketball can hardly fail to recognize the qualities of an ideal leader, particularly evident in Clayton Johnson. The varsity football team looks to him for assistance in ironing out all problems on the fields as does the basketball team. One can see for himself that the success of R.H.S.’s sports program depends largely on the cooperation of coaches like Clayton Johnson. 217 ... 3S !|s! ' Buying . . . Selling . . .
