On September 2, the night of the Rockets’ first game, a 0-0 tie was gained from a highly respected Reidsville team. During the remainder of the season, school spirit was displayed through numerous pep rallies and bonfires. School spirit reached its peak after the 26-0 defeat of arch rival Henderson. Another crown of Rocket glory was the Homecoming win over Oxford Orphanage. On November 4, the seniors, serving as honorary captains of the Rocket squad, played their final game. They were individually called to the center of the field and introduced to the fans. This terminated the football season, but these events will long be remembered by the players, coaches, and supporters. Although they provided much fight and hustle, the Rockets never could manage to get rolling past a tough Northern defense. Ray Clayton made one long run to keep some hope alive, only to be caught from behind by a Northern defender. ROXBORO 14 OXFORD 6 Barry Schoch caught Sim Davis ' pass in the end zone for an extra point after a 36 yard TD run by Kyle Young, Rocket fullback. Young added another 30 yard run for six points. Johnny Ferguson was an outstanding defensive player for the Rockets in this, the first conference game. ROXBORO 27 OXFORD ORPHANAGE 0 A Rocket victory over the Oxford Orphanage Red Devils added to the ful¬ fillment of a spirited Homecoming. The Rocket offense was the main feature of the Homecoming Game. Sim Davis scored one of the four Roxboro TDs. Fred Jackson, junior tackle, was an outstanding defensive performer. A pass interception and a recovered fumble by Jackson were preludes to two Rocket TDs. ROXBORO 34 SOUTHERN 6 Bobby Knott, sophomore end, grabbed a pass from Roger James en route to paydirt. Ray Clayton, Kyle Young, a nd Larry Clayton joined together in over¬ powering the Southern Rebels with three quick scores in the first quarter. The final TDs came on aerials from Sim Davis and Roger James to Butch Winstead and Barry Schoch respectively. ROXBORO 7 CHAPEL HILL 14 A slow Roxboro start and a quick Wildcat tally hampered the Rockets throughout the game. In the final stanza, however, the determined Rockets made a bid for a tie, when Ray Clayton ran over from the four yard line and Roger James kicked the extra point. Kyle Young carried the ball on the final drive that was stopped on the four yard line when time expired. ROXBORO 26 HENDERSON 0 On the first play from scrimmage, Larry Clayton picked up a Bulldog fumble and romped thirty-four yards for the first Rocket TD. Two other TDs by Roger James and one by Fred Jackson aided in overpowering our arch rival Henderson. After the climatic victory, Coach Morris was carried across the field on the shoulders of the Rocket players. ROXBORO 6 HILLSBORO 34 The Rockets finished the season with a defeat at the hand of the conference champions, Hillsboro. Although the score indicated a severe loss, the Rockets in total yardage, including passing and rushing, were high for the night. Larry Clayton swept around the end for a long gain to add to the total rushing yardage. The Rockets ended the season with an over-all season record of 4-4-2. ROXBORO 0 GRAHAM 13 Four fumbles on key plays proved disastrous to the Rocket offense. On several occasions, drives were stopped by fumbles. Their next four games ended with the Roxboro girls on the shorter end of the score, but this did not stop their determination and hustle. In their next game, the girls beat the Henderson lassies a second time, and this victory came on the latter’s home court. This year ' s team, having lost six Seniors by graduation, has done a creditable job of rebuilding.
