More subscriptions have been sold and greater effort has gone into this production of the yearbook than any in the past. The progress of our school is depicted in every section and student growth is evident on every page. Aside from providing valuable reminders of work and play, classmates and friends, it reminds us that the final edition of our lives will be written by the deeds of our everyday living. If the final monument of our effort is to be worthy, it must be chiseled out of the marble of hard work and devotion to truth and duty. ■ ■■ mmrnr mrnm wr mrn m 0 SSSSS SSSS 5f SSSSmm00 9 Igggsssssssssssr IggSSSSSSSSgSSff gSSSmmmmmmSSS ' FRANKLIN ROSS JONES A. We, the Senior Class, leave to the Sophomores our intelligence and dignity to aid them throughout their remain¬ ing high school days. We, the Senior Class, leave to the Freshmen our long hours spent working for that little white diploma. We, the Senior Class, leave to the Faculty a sense of accomplishment and possible relief after finally bidding us farewell. t 57 For I dipt into the future, Far as human eyes could see, Saw — A reunion of the renowned ’56- 57 Roxboro High School Senior Class. Oh, you remember that year - It was the smallest class in many years - but it seemed their QUALITY over-shadowed their QUAN¬ TITY. Now we enter the halls of ivy (after winding our way through the work gang, which is steadily increasing.) We are greeted by the very distinguished principal, Franklin Jones, who, in his subtle way, tries (and succeeds) to sell us a basketball or football season ticket. After futile argument, we tuck our newly purchased tickets in our purse and follow the crowd into the auditorium for an impressive program, which will be followed by an hour of socializing. The Rev. Wayland Johnson gives the devotional and provides his own special music. The program is quarterbacked by Mr. Master of Ceremonies himself, none other than Bill Strum. Bill and his partners, Albert Pruitt and J. R. Loyd have the million dollar quiz show: Break Your Pocketbook. Next on the agenda are musical selections by the choral department under the direction of WHOM ??? Anne Berry! 1 (Seems Mrs. Berger is taking a well earned vacation.) Our program is concluded by brief words from Mr. Jones. We now congregate in the library, where homebreakers - pardon, homemakers - Hilda Davis, Estelle Neathery, and Margaret Clayton serve us pyroot tea, a new drink made popular by D. W. Ashley, Van Barker, and Alfred Long. Yvonne Brooks, Joy Shields, and Kaye Blalock offer us some of their homemade cookies, and, boy, do they send you reeling and rocking!! And now enter the late comers. The same ' ole bunch - well, maybe a little changed. Who is the striking young man from a naval academy? Why it’s Lt. James Abbitt with his office boy, Carolyn Nicks. Next we see Gary Carver, Tom Burton, and Alton Carver, all three distinguished professors of hier¬ oglyphics. Having dropped in at Joe Black’s Heartbreak Motel on the way, they are feeling pretty good at the reunion. They are really painting the town red these days, since their return from Friendly Zombie Land, where they have been on an experimental job for fifteen years. Why, here come two of our former classmates who have really made good. They are fashion de¬ signers, Nancy Breedlove and Patsy Weaver, and are wearing their latest creations - hang on, folks.! (Grandad Wilbert Clayton stops in for a moment to say Hi!) Marie Dagenhart, who is assisting Mrs. Nichols in Latin 11, comes in with her prize pupil - Anne Jones - who recites Mark Antony’s Funeral Address backwards in Latin. A sudden siren blast sends everyone rushing to the windows to behold the sight of all sights, the gorgeous orange and black Eldorado Cat of the newly appointed Secretary of Agriculture, none other than our old classmate, Reginald Rogers (No kin to western star, Roy Rogers.) Attired in exquisite uni¬ form is the prominent chauffeur of the Honorable Handley, 6’ 7 Barry Broach, (Hadacol really gave him an upward lift.) Secret Service agents, Eric Buchanan and H. A. Whitfield roll out the red carpet for the stately entrance. Gus Burns, famous criminal lawyer (for Jayne Mansfield) is lecturing a group by the REFRESHMENT table, as his secretary, Ann Cole, scribbles notes in her well organized notebook. An intellectual group is discussing Paradise Almost Gone. They are Thelbert Clayton, Kenneth Norris, and Marshall White. What’s this? Edna Harris, Ernest Dixon, Huel Clayton, Henry Glasscock, and Adelaide Chambers are discussing North Carolina taxes with Mr. Jones and his new office worker, Helen Crews. Bonita Brandon is slowly working her way up to the assistant to the assistant to the assistant to the assistant. Bonita knows that the best policy is slowly but surely. t 57 Here comes Sandra Featherston, who is now coaching a baskethall team at Ever-Ready College for Everyone. Her team consists of speedy Carolyn Daniels, hustling Meriel Brooks, and long, lanky Lula Bell Clayton. Mabel Hart, Libby Holeman, and Mary Jane Lee make up the water bucket brigade. The girls have a great record - 1, 999 losses - 2 wins. This is a new year for automobiles too, as well as sports. Graham Nichols, Speed-Demon ; V ayne Slaughter, Whiz ; and Huel Martin, Go, Man ; have breezed in for a few minutes on their way to Indianapolis. Marshall Wayne Tuck, outstanding news cortimentator for Station WOW, operating on 50, 000, 000 millicycles, interviews such outstanding alumni as Secretary General of LVSC (longer vacations for school children), Howard Duncan, and his associates Cecil Lee, Wiley Martin, James Lee, and Bobby Knott. Also present is the All-Universe football team, coached by James Monroe Shrine Bowl All Star Tapp. The squad is made up of Joe Dimcan, James Hargis, Bobby Hicks, Edward Lee, Levon Miles, Lex Newton, Randall Olivet, Marvin Whitfield, and Thomas Wrenn. We hear Will Rogers has made millions signing his name to Toothpaste ads — looks like the real thingj Eugene Montgomery escorts in Phillip Phelps, Hollywood ' s idol and his lovely wife - Betty Phillips. We see Mary Gwynn Matlock and Bettie Anne Owen laughing (?) with Mr. Jones about lunch permits - old memories. Say, someone just told me that Charlotte Humphries and Rosalind Dunevant are assisting in Chemistry and Math at RHS. Remember how they hated it? Ruby Lester gayly flashes her three rings! I Air Force, Navy, and Marines - one in every service, eh. Ruby? And here comes Clem Mewborne, fashionable debutante. (Hubby forgot his footb all whistle and she ' s bringing it.) Joan Newton and Gwin Owen, famed ballet stars, do an impromptu dance for us - very lovely, not too graceful, but nice! Mr. Jones wanted to see Clarence Snow, John Crumpton, Carl Harris, and Malcolm Whitt immedi¬ ately after the reunion. He ' s still searching for the old firecracker bombardiers. Betty Lee Talley, Delaine Wood, and Clara Snow are managing the Sunrise Cafeteria here in Rox- boro. They say it ' s fun but they have trouble staying in pizza ' cause Charlie Wilkerson, town ' s most eligible bachelor, loves it so well. Elsie Oakley honors us with her rendition - Shake, Rattle, and Tune up with antifreeze. ” Elsie now sings with the M. E. T. (more ELVIS tunes.) Sue Campbell regrets she could not be present, as she is on her way, by steamer, to Africa, (and asks for some Mother Fletcher’s Sea Sick Pills!!) It really is way into the night when we leave but it has been such fun - seeing our old friends and reminiscing. We had made new friends. But kept the old. New friends are like silver. But old friends are like gold. wmmmanmrn i tmmmmmmrn d ’ZSSzzzZSZZZSSZ ■rnmmmmmmm mmmmmmw m fmmmmmm md tmmmmmmmM fa ZrnZmmmmdtmmmmmmmrniE-- mmmmmmmmmmi mmmmddmmmmmmmi mdfmmmmmmmmmm dmmmmmmmmmdmm mmmmmmmmmmrntr mm rnmmmmmm m mm m rnmmmmmm fmmmmmmmm mm mm m mm mm rnmmmmmm President - DAVID DAY Vice President EARL LONG Treasurer PETE SATTERFIELD Secretary SARA JANE GRIFFIN ■e Sergeant-at-Arms JIMMY LONG ' 9 . . f i ■ ' ’ ' ’ V 1 LARRY ALLEN BILL ANDERSON SUE BARKER MARION BEASLEY SHIRLEY BEAVERS DIANE BLAIR HANNAH BLANKS KEN BOLIN PHILLIP BOWES BEVERLY BROOKS FRANCES BROOKS DOUG BROWN MILDRED BROWN SANDRA BUCHANAN GUY CARVER BUD CARVER BOBBY CATES MARY CATES LOUISE CLAYTON MARY CLAYTON RICHARD CLAYTON VIOLET CLAYTON JEAN DANIEL NANCY DAVIS PHYLLIS DAVIS DAVID DAY JOYCE DENNY LEBBY DIXON RONNIE DIXON PATSY DUNN REGINALD DUNN THOMAS DUNN GERALD FOX REBECCA FOX BING GREGORY SARA GRIFFIN BRADSHER HALL PEGGY HARRIS REGINALD HARRIS HUGH HENDERSON CAROLYN HICKS RAMONA HOLT MELVIN HUFF MALCOLM HYLER FRANK JENNINGS DELORES JONES SARA JONES THOMAS LILLY EARL LONG JIMMY LONG VIRGINIA LONG LINDA LUNSFORD JOYCE MARS TON JOHN MOORE SANDRA MOORE SYBIL MOORE JEANETTE MORRIS JOYCE MORRISON BARBARA MURRAY LOU JEAN MURRAY JANET NEWELL BARBARA NEWTON REBECCA NEWTON GARLAND OAKES JOSEPHINE OAKLEY ROGER OAKLEY SHIRLEY OAKLEY SHELBY OLIVER BETTY PARKER MARGARET PATTERSON GEORGE PERKINS CHARLES PULLIAM SHREFIA PULLIAM EDNA PULLIAM VIRGINIA ROBERTSON LINDA ROGERS ANDREW ROMA NET INDIA RUSSELL RAY RUSSELL PETE SATTERFIELD DIANE SAUNDERS PATRICIA SHEPHARD DOCIE SHIELDS ANN SHORT JERRY SLAUGHTER LARRY SNOW PAUL SNIPES M. It started with a bang as a talent show was performed in the auditorium. Bingo, dart throwing, dancing, the horror house, ball throwing, and the raffle of a turkey and ten cakes added to the gala occasion. The evening was climaxed by the crowning of the Harvest King and Queen.
