UNKNOWN In THemory MR, SHUFORD As, leaving some grand waterfall, We, lingering, list its roar- So memory will hallow all We've known but know no more. ABRAHAM LINCOLN Foreword Our school as we know it today, is built upon a combination of ideals. These ideals are the culmination of the efforts and the contributions, the visions and the aspirations of the many students and teachers who have entered its doors, passed through its halls, and received its influence. On leaving, they have bequeathed to us the will to attain still higher standards, the desire for increased wisdom, and the enthusiasm to keep high that spirit which is essen- tial to Roxboro High School. THE ROCKET STAFF 86 Prophecy Excitement fills the air, Something special is happening, It is Homecoming Weekend at Roxboro High School, Even the class from way back in 1954 is coming home, Gee, there are Suzy Long, the first Homecoming Queen, and Wally Harris still together, Suzy has taken time off from her job as art editor of Vogue to fly down for the big Homecoming, So Wally’s gone AWOL to be here with her, Look who's with them--Mr, and Mrs, Haywood Simpson, Mrs, Simpson is the former Miss Joanne Turner, Everyone rises as the band, directed by Holmes Adair, marches on the field to play the national anthem, The stands go wild as the Roxboro Rockets, coached by Jerry Red Clayton rush on the field, But look! There comes Joe Currin with his Oxford team, He and Jerry couldn't coach the same team, Here comes a nursery! But, no, it's the former Betty Blanks, Shirley Oakley, Lillian Pruett, Carolyn Oakley, Betty Snead and Dorothy Taylor with their little bundles of joy. We have the honor tonight of having kalph Lewis to announce the game, He's known in television as the Little Man with the Big Voice. Barbara Stewart's here covering the game for the New York Times, Anne Carver is here with her boss (she's a secretary) Waite Warren, civil engineer, She's still sitting on his knee taking notes, Madoline Saunders, telegraph operator, transmits the regrets of Bill Mewborne, Secretary of State, who is detained in Washington. Rebecca Allen and Carolyn Snipes tell us they are having the times of their lives taking dictation from Sammy Merritt and Connie Albert who are criminal lawyers, Suddenly all eyes are turned to the sky where we see Mike Tiliman's jet with the exhaust writing in the sky, Sorry I can't be there, I'm on my way to Mars, Surely hope there's no wreck tonight, Here comes the Person County Memorial Hospital Nursing Staff--Shirley Holeman, Yvonne Winstead, Emily Scott and Lee Pass, With them is Dr, Clifton Whitt, There is the same old ambulance up by the school, It was driven over by Winfred Coates-- The Friendly Undertaker, There come Kathleen Tillman and Barbara Cobb who came down from New York, Kathleen is going to accompany Barbara in her Carnegie Hall debut next week, There are quite a few whistles as our models enter the stands, They are Mary Lee Bowen, Patricia Tuck, Marie Tingen, Patricia Hester and Magdalene Tuck, We just have to talk to the winner of the British Open Golf Tournament--Billy Gene Long. He tells us that he was flown in on TWA by co-pilots Tommy Whitfield and Rob- in Weaver, Looking real lovey-dovey are Lawrence Barker and Shirley Kelley, Shirley is manager of the Glamor Shop and Lawrence is making quite a hit as Marilyn Monroe's leading man, We look at the place that is reserved for the faculty, There are Billy Reynolds, Ann Fuller, Joyce Long, Chester Oakley and Hansel Oakley, There goes the whistle for the end of the game, It ends with a 0-0 score, It seems that Jerry's and Joe's teams are well-matched, Somebody shouts, Terry is giving away Meadow Gold Ice Cream at Bruce's, It seems that Bruce Jackson and Terry Foushee have taken over Eric’s, On the way to Bruce's we see Patrolmen Wayne Winstead and Buddy Bradsher directing traffic, After we eat Terry's ice cream everybody goes to the gym for the big dance, Bobby O'Briant's dance band really sounds good, Jean Millican makes quite a hit as the girl vocalist, Dig those crazy dancing teachers John Dewey Bradsher and Phyllis Clayton! If their pupils could only see them bop like they are right now. Walking toward us are Nancy Minor and Donny Tripp who have just been selected Best Dressed Man and Woman in the World. We learn that Agnes Stem and Phyllis Singleton can't make it tonight, They are in Dix Hill still trying to weave baskets, Professor James Slaughter walks in with his math class from UNC including McGruder Bagby, Peggy Beavers, Cleo Briggs, Linwood Daniel, Joanne Burton and Ross Crews, We learn that Dan Featherston has just completed a best-seller How To Get Along With Women, Tourist court owners, Mary Wooding Duncan and Betsy Willson have come from Virginia Beach on Mary's DeSoto, singing, Old Sailors Never Die, They Just Sail Away.” Pat Satterfield, owner of Satterfield's Riding Academy, is still looking for a horse that doesn't eat, There's Sidney Bradsher, who is Ambassador to Spain, We'd like to really talk to him but there comes the floor-show featuring Lois Clayton, Daphna Dixon, Gail Holder, Norma Gray and Linda Hester, John Eggleston and James Cole can stay only a minute at the dance, They have to go home to put the little Juniors to bed. James Duncan, N, L, Hall and G, B, Holt came from Detroit in their latest inven- tion--the gasless, wheelless, motorless, bodyless car, Weil? Nancy Perkins, famous concert pianist, arranged her tout of the United States so she could be at the dance, 87 Betty Leonard who has taken over Walter Winchell's column tells us that Florence Owen is quite a well-known movie critic, It seems that Eugene Clayton and Shirley “Howerton are really climbing to the top in movies in a hurry, Joyce Day, Sue Shotwell and Effie Hill have just-invented 74H by As Betty Ann Miles, Carolyn Lloyd and Elizabeth Matlock are managing the secretarial department of Civil Service, Faye Wright must have really loved RHS, She's the school secretary, She says that Mr, Hester's the same as ever, Lasel a Wayne Oakfey takes time out at the dance to sell Henry Long and Junior Nichols ‘some life insurance, Since they are hell-drivers at the Snake Road Speedway, which is owned by W. S, Pleasant, they need it, Lura Shull, the librarian, invites us to see the new library constructed by Franklin Warren and Robert Woody, Jackie Strum has returned to fulfill his greatest ambition--to paint Mrs, Nichols’ portrait, We are disappointed to learn that Peggy Walker, Clarice Suitt and Lavonne Snead cannot be with us, they are trying to be the first women to climb Mt, Everest, Nancy White, Marie Wilson and Lucille Wilkins have achieved national fame for inventing runless nylons, Vernon Bishop and Donald Brooks own a thriving miniature golf course, They promise us all a free game, Patsy Carver is here on crutches, She was struck by “Lightning, The band strike s up Goodnight Ladies” and we realize how great it's been to see everybody and learn what the Class of 1954 is doing, EL FIN , THE END e 2 BOOSTERS THOMAS OAKLEY DRUG i PEORHE'S BANK BROWN BURRUSS BUMPASS MOTORS Ri Sane cob IR. ee THOMASSON MOTORS y oD NU- Y CLEANERS Wa Z.
