FOOTBALL Playing the toughest schedule that ever faced Roxboro eleven, the 1946 addition of the Roxboro Rockets enjoyed a fairly successful football season by sweeping five games, dropping five and tying one for a season's record of 500. The Rockets, how- ever, had to contend themselves with fourth place in the newly organized North Central Conference, having defeeted Chapel Hill 7-0 in a thriller while dropping close tilts to Oxford Orphanage, Raleigh Methodist Orphanage and Oxford High School. Coached by Walter Rogers, former Eastern Carolina Teachers' College graduate, Roxboro gained a reputation from their opponents for playing a clean hard brand of football. It is hard to single out any one performer on the Roxboro High School grid squad for praise, for the team worked together as a unit. But we think that Bill Shotwell, Jimmy Street, Peg Owens and Kelly Paylor stood out in the line while Cecil James, Bob Currier, Bobby Blanks and George Gentry were outstanding among the backfieldmen. A. si Neoaae ably packed up by Mac Dunn, Wally Parker, Howard Crews, J. Be Dunn, Jack Whitt, Bobby Crumpton, Norman Tapp, Whitey Clayton, Frank Jordon, Gordon Allen, Charlie Stewart and Bobby Gentry. The Rockets started off the grid season slow but seemed to pick up steam as they went along hitting their peak in the letter part of the season and upsetting the highly rated Draper High School by a 19-6 score in a game played on Drapers own field. “Bo™ Currier, hard-charging fullback, and his teemmates really hit their stride in this game, as they took turns ripping the Draper line to shreds. The past week the Draper eleven had de- feated some unfortunate eleven 83-0 and until they tengled with the underdog Rockets they were the cless B choice to play in the Textile Bowl. Roxboro drew the curtain on the 1946 grid season with the traditional Turkey Day game with our county rival, Bethel Hill. Playing before a capacity crowd, the Rockets scored in the opening period when Bobby Blanks, veteran tailback, broke off ; a 66 yard drive by knifing ten yards off teckle for a touchdown. Cecil James tgllied Roxboro's second touchdown midway through the second period on a plunge Hach fsapesuie soe i anew Barer isn i= YT Pe ore aetna iae nanll ae eee ee ieee Ae MW a, “Ya, “Shy “th Dy Boyt ART a es ony ts ey Heid Spt oe 5 A baste t + aus ioe oh tice f, Ay ars re Perse oe Fhe “ as Liha we we e Gas ie Nes ye enahae ay ea: ast ae Ye: RY! tek) ania f ele Fe Ac Phe keg A Vrs Frye hike a are Sah Fee 8 s oe ° Py Genrer atte bt ne al 9 yee sn) bat x fe Dod ot ieee ee ceri © elit 5s es ee ied Ge a Ae an rept Mey =k Beth ign ob Palen Bie ae tesie HUET a 7” BA wee Po = ) ¢ 2 3 z z a= ah a aes © riya a ti od op te SARGEt®) F pS ROBLES AY eu hieie teed Eeldare at WN Was eke ES 4608 tan oe = precio tts 1s gs ee ae ve Oe See. ee eee er eer SS aie im epee te Eyepta hew be ote ots De pag nes suse elke persis 4 ¥ ee oat, ve oy a A os wa oak A GP Reve th of 4 . 4) “one at Oly ap Awe se hat Hyun cals —seoe ee eT SS site eaettE i i { raps z th, ved : a ; . ’ yy ‘ i, i ow Lei q ia 4 NS i oi 4 Raleigh Methodist Orphanage 27 Hillsboro 26 Oxford Orphanage 27 Chapel Hill 0 Oxford High 13 Henderson 13 Graham 6 Bragtown 13 Draper 0 Bethel Hill 0 Norlina 0 “3 ee pA Sie é j ‘ ; dalam oo Ba f apie by omy ares 7 Powe jae f C racers Dc tet th nestntetladninas deme veer tnempnani estab aca at Ee tat CUA aw FA — v - a Pare: ey FF 4 Cots a ae by eM tint ys Hag © 4) : iullipinene seeietiaatanieeteunmanteinn saan Other games played were: through center from the two yard stripe, and it was James again who hit pay dirt in the final quarter mking the score 19-0 in Roxboro's favor, closing the season with Roxboro 6 Roxboro 13 Roxboro 0O Roxboro 0 Roxboro 6 Roxboro 34 Roxboro 13 Roxboro 19 Roxbore 19 a victory over Bethel Hill. When the Rocket basketeers opened the season in the old pneumonia hole (gymnasium), prospects were dark indeed, for of last year's fine squad only two first stringers remained. These were Bobby (Blitz) Blanks, who has been high scorer for the past two years, and Norman Tapp, the big red-headed junior with the ho ok shote Gone from lest year's fine cage were Bill Jo Winstead, Jack Whitt, and Bill Shotwell. Coach Rogers managed to dig down into his reserves and come wp with some promising new material in Bobby Gentry and James Ramsey. It was with these boys that he managed to defeat Helena and double the score on a weak Bethel Hill five before the Holidays. After Guests: with two victories against commty opposition in their pookstat things began to brighten up for the Rockets. Jack Whitt, set shot specialist, rejoined the squad after having out with a fractured leg suffered in the latter part of the football EA Developing fast with another experienced performer on the team, Roxboro rang up three successive victories against non’ conference opponents. In their first conference screp against the tall Oxford High School Meng ys. quintette, the Rockets came out victorious in a thrilling neck to neck struggle AEM ot ee pagt right down to the final whistle. The Rockets climbed to the top rung in the =F conference race the following week by soundly trouncing Raleigh Methodist Orphanage by a 54 to 21 count. In defeating the Orphanage tean, Roxboro was . greatly strengthened by the return of a six foot-two beanpole™ named Bill Shotwell. After nine straight wins Roxboro finally had an “off night and dropped its first game of the cage season to Reidsville High by a one point margine The Rockets' average in height is slightly under six feet. With their passing attack they have been said to resemble a college team. De Young, former students of Woman's College and Wake Forest College, respectfully, who gave their every effort to the improvement of the teame We feel that we owe a lot to three of our members who are leaving us this year, Jessie Winstead, Christine Pamplin and Jean Winstead. The name is appropriate, since the enthusiasm of Mr, Thompson has made it possible for the orchestra to exist. Members of the organization have spent many hours during the past few months practicing together, but it is proving to be a worth-while project. It not only trains the mind to a better reading knowledge of music, but it is also a means of recreation. The members include sophomores, juniors, seniors, numbering thirteen in all. Picking at the bass fiddle, or sometimes called by musicians the “dog house”, we find Charlie Stewart, whose personality somewhat resembles a “dog house . Next hs hh hh, Hh, hh there is Gordon Allen who is well suited to “beat the traps . In the brass section, elirton Boyd and George Scott play the trombones, or sometimes called the “Bazooka”. The three trumpeters are Johnny Horton, George Gentry,‘ and Gene Cozart. The gaxaphones' chairs are occupied by Johnny Thompson, the maestro, Donald Smith, Rufus Shelton, and Mac Abbitt. Pecking on the “horse teeth} or in plain language, playing the piano, there is Kirk Kynoch. And last, there is Shelly Millican, who is the “canary bird™ with the band. We feel and sincerely hope that in the future the orchestra will continue to be a benefit to both the school and to the community. tte te tesit oe apes tis e 9 72 unary pigeree S52 ae = pry ore dan eed Dy ts oe igo rb oye ne = prynaet eo ca Paes Sou otek. The teachers, Mrs. B. Ge Clayton end Mrs. A. F. Nichols, se leoted each candidate for membership in the society according to his rating in English composition. Progress was slow and sometimes discovraging, but with the help of the other English teachers in the lower classes, these teachers worked with the prinoipal, Mr. Jerry L. Hester, in making out a definite schedule for the writing of themes. This proved successful and has stimilated interest among the members. Becoming a member of this society entitles each member to a membership pin, which is of gold, with scroll and quill engraved on ite Along with the pin comes another featuree There is a sooial gathering held at one of the members' home each month, with the Group's game-anagrames-being the main attraction. The work of this class, which is held at a regular period each day, consists of correcting themes end creative writing. As each teacher sends a group of themes to be corrected, the society reads and marks them in a way that the. student will sarataase Each set of corrected papers is carried to its respective class by a member, when possible. This helps to create a feeling of cooperation between the student and the society. Adventages of membership in the English Honor Society are: correcting themes other stude nts write helps the members learn more grammar; having a chance to use and practice grammar in creative writing encoureges the mem'ers to write more freely and correctly; attending meetings of the group helps the members to know each other better; the membership in the society serves as an incentive to students to do better work in English. a ahs a P _ oe ks Shel tyeure— Fe - ; Rue bEetse ks Lots Be pe Ss 2 Oe ee ered ee ose: be dad 7 b oe en a tee Se fH me Gis “pe hb meeq ee % Jade? ag tk = pees ET eet ee ee oe a oe ess ee oe be ere . mm — ea heesh ottet 53 rE leit? f + B24 Dy Says feee ta hws fo by SG ake Ss Age MEO S'S Rta gonre ooh Set 2HS eho Seog Fa Nes 65 tte s ee Eyey st.
