He earned a B.A. Degree at S.I.U.C. and a M.S. at S.I.U.E. For many years Mr. Matthews has served as Chairman of the Science Department and has given dedicated service to the students of Roxana High School. Our best wishes in your travels during your retirement, Mr. Matthews. Mr. Vernon Matthews 77 RETIREMENT Mr. Herndon attended college at Central Mo. State Mo. State College graduating in 1948 with a B.S. in Education. He received an M.S. in Education from SIU Carbondale in 1953 and a Specialist’s Certificate in Counselor Education from SIUE in 1972. He taught one year at Smithton, Mo., 2 years in Benton, II., one year at Vandalia, II. and came to Roxana in 1953 as an Industrial Arts and math teacher. He taught 16 years in Industrial Arts with 12 years as Department Chairman and the last 17 years as Director of Guidance and Counselor. He has always been interested in athletics and has been a scorekeeper or timer at wrestling matches, basketball games and football games for all fo the 37 years he has taught. He coached 6th grade boys’ basketball in Benton, II., Jr. High wrestling for 4 years in Roxana, and for the past 4 years, has been 7th and 8th grade girls’ basketball coach. He has seen counseling change very much over the past 17 years as he has been involved in, and asked other members of the department to develop programs that would benefit the students in Roxana High School and make their service to those students more meaningful and useful. The past five years have been most productive as, with Mr. Rader’s help, he developed the concept of the career resource center and this past summer they designed and built the new facilities for the Guidance Department. During this time Mrs. Calvin helped to develop other programs that benefit our students. He hopes that in the future the Guidance Department will continue in growth and value to the students of RHS as he knows it will. Mr. Herndon's family has grown up in Roxana, his three sons attended Roxana Schools, and now his four grandchildren are attending school in Roxana. We thank Mr. Herndon for 33 years of service to Roxana School District and for the fond memories he leaves with students, teachers and administrators. 78 HOMECOMING 1985-86 HOMECOMING QUEEN MISS STACY LEWIS VUOO'id 88 MAJT 03 HONOR-.
