Because of your efforts on Roxana High School's behalf, we, the 1975-76 Rox Staff, would like to dedicate this yearbook to you, Mr. Vernon Matthews, with our gratitude and thanks. Son of Kenneth and Georgia Matthews, you were born in Olive Branch, Illinois, April 12, 1926. You obtained your primary and secondary education in the Roxana School District. Some of your extra-curricular activities, Mr. Vernon Sleeper Matthews, included: R Club, Photography Club, Track, Band, Dramatics Club, charter member of Thespian Troupe 556 and photography editor on the 1944 Rox staff. After graduating from Roxana you entered the Navy and were stationed at Geneva, New York. Your years of study continued by attending your first year of college at the University of Illinois, three years of undergraduate work at S.I.U. Carbondale, a B.A. degree in educational administration at Carbondale and finally obtaining a Master of Science at S.I.U.E. on August 8, 1958. In 1955 you joined the Roxana teaching staff and your career as a teacher began. Your classes included biology I, biology II and aviation science. Soon afterwards, you became Department Chairman. Miss Connie Herenefeld became Mrs. Vernon Matthews on October 6, 1973, and the two of you now reside in a beautiful home in the wooded area near Bunker Hill. Outside of school, you enjoy such hobbies as rock polishing, botany and aviation. You have traveled all over the U.S. and someday hope to visit Europe. Throughout the years spent at Roxana, you have dedicated yourself to the youth of the school district. It is because of your efforts on Roxana's behalf that we wish to dedicate the 1976 Rox to you, Mr. Vernon Matthews! Sincerely yours. The 1976 Rox Staff 3
