The 1975 ROX Staff dedicates the Rox to Shell Oil Company-Wood River Refinery The Village of Roxana was named for Shell's predecessor company—Roxana Petroleum Company which, prior to 1916. had been purely a production company with oil fields near Drumright Oklahoma. Roxana was the name of Alexander the Great's wife and means dawn of a new day.” Tydeman Avenue in Roxana was named after the first manager of the refinery. Dr. F. W. L. Tydeman. The refinery is honored that Roxana High School took the name of Shells and the Shell emblem as its namesake. The refinery is located on an old Indian campground, and several burial mounds and artifacts have been uncovered during various construction projects. Varying in diameters, there are more than 52 million feet of pipe (nearly 10,-000 miles) in the refinery. Laid end-to-end this would be enough to reach from Wood River to Hong King. Or. . . the diameter of the earth is 7.913 miles. If you could drill these pipes through the earth, there would be enough to do so—plus have two flagpoles each more ahtn 1.000 miles high sticking out on each side. ROX Staff. 1975 a A ’ A 17
