The TLC program is a cooperative effort betwedn S.I.U.E. and the Roxana School District to provide the best possible education for the Roxana students and to produce top quality teachers for the state of Illinois. In order to be certified in the state of Illinois, all future teachers must devote a period of time to non-paid apprenticeship. This is a time that the TLC teacher works under a regular teacher’s direction. It is a transition period between being a student and being a teacher. The TLC teacher is a colleague to the regular teacher but is not yet certified. A full school year is devoted to working with and aiding the regular teacher. The TLC teacher is here to learn how to become an effective teacher and to assist the Roxana students to have more individual education. There are three levels of apprenticeship within the TLC program: 1. “Tutor” is a beginning level TLC teacher who tutors students, plans lessons, prepares and grades test and generally assists and observes the regular teacher. 2. “Teaching Assistant”, the TA, is a second level TLC teacher, who may begin planning units of study for work as a candidate. They prepare audio visual materials for the classroom, works with small student groups, and does some classroom teaching under supervision. 3. “Candidate”, student teacher, is a third level TLC teacher who is able to assume the regular teacher’s responsibility in a limited capacity. The regular teacher assists the candidate in the development of ideas and techniques which are to be used in the classroom. The TLC teacher is provided with additional support and guidance from university education professors at all three levels. The program is unique in allowing the TLC teacher to learn to teach in actual high school classrooms rather than in academic college classes. It is a far more realistic situation. The TLC teachers and university personnel are grateful for the use of the Roxana facilities and to the Roxana students, faculty and staff for their cooperation and support. 22
