0 N ROX Coach Raich. Congratulations on your Mississippi Valley Conference Football Championship in 1973. However, we the ROX staff would like to congratulate you on many achievements. Through your own career and experiences in athletics you have been able to help Roxana students achieve more in the Roxana School District. You were a pitcher on the baseball team, played guard for the football team, and belonged to the Letter-men's Club at Roosevelt High School in St. Louis. After graduation you started your college career at Southwest Missouri State during which you played minor league summer baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers and later for the Cincinnati Reds. During your senior year the army called, and you served in the medical corps in France and Germany playing some army football and baseball. After a knee injury you then turned to coaching the two preceeding sports. Following your discharge from the army, you returned to Southwest Missouri State and received your B.S. in education in 1958. For five years you taught physical education, mathematics, and history at Calhoun High School in Hardin, Illinois. This was also the beginning of your high school coaching career. At Calhoun you coached football, basketball, and baseball. In 1962 you received your M.Ed. degree from the University of Missouri. You came to Roxana as a physical education teacher and assistant football coach in 1963. In 1965 you were promoted to head baseball coach and in 1970 to head football coach. Officiating in various sports and heading the intramurals program has occupied your time between football and baseball seasons for many years. In the summer time you manage the Roxana swimming pool. Although busy, you and wife Margaret with your five children, Anne 13, Deborah 10, Gwendolyn 8, Kathleen 5, and Michael 2'A have many good times together. Throughout the years spent at Roxana, you have dedicated yourself to the youth of the school district. It is because of your efforts on Roxana's behalf that we wish to dedicate the 1974 ROX to you, Charles Raich Jr. with our gratitude and thanks. The TLC program is a cooperative effort betwedn S.I.U.E. and the Roxana School District to provide the best possible education for the Roxana students and to produce top quality teachers for the state of Illinois. In order to be certified in the state of Illinois, all future teachers must devote a period of time to non-paid apprenticeship. This is a time that the TLC teacher works under a regular teacher’s direction. It is a transition period between being a student and being a teacher. The TLC teacher is a colleague to the regular teacher but is not yet certified. A full school year is devoted to working with and aiding the regular teacher. The TLC teacher is here to learn how to become an effective teacher and to assist the Roxana students to have more individual education. There are three levels of apprenticeship within the TLC program: 1. “Tutor” is a beginning level TLC teacher who tutors students, plans lessons, prepares and grades test and generally assists and observes the regular teacher. 2. “Teaching Assistant”, the TA, is a second level TLC teacher, who may begin planning units of study for work as a candidate. They prepare audio visual materials for the classroom, works with small student groups, and does some classroom teaching under supervision. 3. “Candidate”, student teacher, is a third level TLC teacher who is able to assume the regular teacher’s responsibility in a limited capacity. The regular teacher assists the candidate in the development of ideas and techniques which are to be used in the classroom. The TLC teacher is provided with additional support and guidance from university education professors at all three levels. The program is unique in allowing the TLC teacher to learn to teach in actual high school classrooms rather than in academic college classes. It is a far more realistic situation. The TLC teachers and university personnel are grateful for the use of the Roxana facilities and to the Roxana students, faculty and staff for their cooperation and support. 22 Senior Class Officers Vice-President Walter Copeland Secretary-T reasurer Cathy Bedwell President R.
