:____________= ROXANA HIGH SCHOOL ROXANA, ILLINOIS The 1970 ROX staff would like the honor of dedicating the 1970 ROX to you, Mrs. Birdine Groshong, for your outstanding service to Roxana High School. Your school year extracurricular activities usually begin with the fall play. Your direction has included the plays Jenny Kissed Me , Harvey , and Pillow Talk. With a brief time interval in between, you begin rehearsals for the spring highlight, the musical. The musical you directed this past year, 1969, was Brigadoon , and in the past you have also directed such stage hits as The Sound of Music , On a Clear Day You Can See Forever , and above all the unforgettable Little Abner . In all you have directed approximately thirty-six plays during your varied career. Also deeply appreciated is your sponsorship of Thespian Troupe 556, and your coaching of the varsity and junior varsity speech teams which have ranked highly in competition with the Greater St. Louis Speech Association of which you are presently secretary. Above we have mentioned briefly a few of the activities of one of your full and outstanding years of dedication and service to the school. We would also like to commend you on your interesting classes which are part of your regular teaching schedule. Your teaching career began with a Bachelor's degree from Northern Illinois University, followed by a Master's degree from the University of Illinois. Other schools which you have attended include Washington University, Colorado University, and Southern Illinois University. Mrs. Groshong, you came here in the fall of 1956 after teaching at West Aurora High School, Sandwich High School and for one year at East Alton—Wood River High School. You originally taught English at the time courses in speech and dramatics were first being initiated. In 19 you assumed the role of sponsoring Thespian Troupe 556 from Mr. Dick Tendrick. From that point you became active in the Illinois and Greater St. Louis speech contest work. On July 11, 1942, Miss Birdine Morris became Mrs. Birdine Groshong. Five years later a son, Don, who is now a freshman majoring in law at the University of Illinois, was added to the family. Ten years after your marriage, a daughter, Dell, a senior at East Alton—Wood River High School made the family a foursome. Your professional school activities include NEA, IEA, and REA. Extracurricular activities that you have been and are active in include: the Alton Little Theater, Speech Mistress Club, American Association of University Women, European Tour Chaperone, East Alton Grade School Board Member, and Secretary of the Greater St. Louis Speech Association. It is with great pride and appreciation that we dedicate this book to you, MRS. G. for your achievements as an educator and as a person. For these reasons, we wish to take this opportunity to honor you by dedicating the 1970 ROX to you, Mrs. Birdine Groshong. He was a teacher and a principal at Roxana for eleven years, a principal at Ur-bana for six years, and a superintendent at Palos Park for one year before returning to Roxana in 1968. Dr. Donald L. Harvick Superintendent Harold H. Huck Administrative Assistant Ralph K. Rader Administrative Assistant 19 High School Administration Robert D. Kissack Mr. Kissack came to the Roxana school system in 1950 after receiving a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Illinois. He taught in the junior high school for five years, and then he taught geometry and physical education in the high school. He served as varsity basketball coach until I960, at which time he assumed the duties of assistant principal. In 1962 Mr. Kissack became principal. i Charles D. Conner Mr. Conner, our assistant principal, completed his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees at Eastern Illinois University in 1968. He has also completed half of the necessary requirements for a Special Certificate in Educational Administration. He previously taught for five years: four years at Rantoul High School and one year at Oakwood Junior High. 20 What is a Teacher? What is a teacher? A teacher is many things ... He is knowledge with a smile on his face . . . Democracy with a hook in his hand . . . Wisdom with a flick of white chalk dust on his clothes. He comes in all sizes and temperaments. Short, tall, skinny, plump, laughing, serious, happy and sad. He's the future of the nation in a white shirt, respect with a college education. His days are filled with school bells, your chatter . . . chalk dust . . . waving hands... questions and worried parents. Teachers can be found after school taking aspirin, supervising athletics, rehearsing plays, and just sitting at a desk waiting for strength to go home. Teachers are expected to go to church, keep out of debt, have creative minds, stay away from cigarettes, beer, and bingo games, and give willingly to the United Fund. A teacher dispenses magic, sells futures... Dreams are his stock in trade. From his classroom will come the doctors of tomorrow, the men who will go beyond the moon, the great artists and novelists of the year 2000 . . . the industrial tycoons and all the leaders America will need to survive in a puzzled world. He's the future of the world with a ruler in his hand . . . Progress with a pencil behind his ear. Unappreciated at times, harried and overworked, he gains his pay in secret satisfaction. Secretly, he will admit I have the greatest job of all. And he has—because he holds the history of the world in the palm of his hand. He's a TEACHER. ... by Dan Valentine 21 i ia T . tiit • • •••] ■rr% Terry Durham B.S. S.I.U., Tennis Coach James Hill M.A.Ed. U. of III Dept. And may there be no moaning of the bar. When I put out to sea. But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam. When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell. And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark; For though from our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar. t Einstein He gave to man the energy secret of the stars Early in this century, Albert Einstein forged the simple mathematical equation which already has led to spectacular scientific discoveries. Because he dared to question accepted laws of physics, we now know why our sun has not burned itself out. We light cities by harnessing energy supplied by tiny amounts of uranium. Scientists, guided by radioactive isotopes, follow new medicines into the very cells of the body. This is the way of a breakthrough. It sparks advances... spurs other inquiring minds in the search for knowledge We. at Shell, believe deeply that more and more such minds must be sought out... must be provided a climate in which they may work creatively. That is why Shell, through its broad program in support of education, provides scholarships for deserving students, grants for universities and unique Shell Merit Fellowships to help science teachers in their quest for new insight and understanding. In Shell Research we sec how fruitful well-trained minds can be-in synthetics that help end man’s dependence on older materials, new aids enabling farmers to increase yields. And, of course, finer gasolines and motor oils. When you see the sign of the Shell let it remind you of people dedicated to the pursuit of excellence—of new ideas, new products, new ways to serve you better. The Shell Companies: Shell Oil Company: Shell Chemical Company: Shell Pipe Line Corporation; Shell Development Company. 148 Best Wishes to the graduating class of 1970 Roxana Community High School graduates have found satisfying careers at the Olin Works. As this area's largest employer, we look forward to interviewing those students who are now ready to enter the working world of industry.
