An outstanding landmark in the high school area is the huge elm tree just south of the building. The tree has withstood the building of Roxana High School along with the numerous additions and improvements which have followed. It is a favorite with biology students, since it is quite easily identified, and it has come to symbolize the high standards and ideals of the Roxana school system. 2

'Dedication The staff of the 1963 Hox takes this opportunity to salute an outstanding member of the Roxana High School faculty, Miss Mary Legate. The senior member of the faculty, Miss Legate is finishing her forty-ninth year of teaching this year. Since next year will mark her golden anniversary, the staff feels it would be better to bestow the honor essentially at the beginning of the fiftieth year than to do so after that year is completed. Miss Legate, a native of near-by Grafton, Illinois, attended Baker University in Kansas, and received her B„A» from Southwest Missouri Teacher's College in 1919. In 1933, she completed her Master of Arts degree at the University of Missouri, and she has taken post graduate work at the University of Colorado and the University of. Chicago. The first teaching position Miss Legate held was in the elementary school at Marion-ville, Missouri in 1912. High schools in Seneca and Excelsior Springs, Missouri, both benefited from her services before she joined the faculty at Morris, Illinois in 1943. In 1948, Miss Legate began teaching in the Roxana High School, and in 1959 she became head of the English department. The past two years, Miss Legate has been working with the college prep English IV class in conjunction with the television teaching series. It is with deep respect that the 1963 Rox staff dedicates this yearbook to a devoted and unselfish educator--Miss Legate.
