t Washington Monument ROXANA HIGH SCHOOL Roxana, Illinois Co-Editors Janet Sticht - Barbara Wheeler Shirley Sticht - Assistant Editor Drexine McGill - Business Manager An outstanding landmark in the high school area is the huge elm tree just south of the building. The tree has withstood the building of Roxana High School along with the numerous additions and improvements which have followed. It is a favorite with biology students, since it is quite easily identified, and it has come to symbolize the high standards and ideals of the Roxana school system. 2 Iwo Jima Monument 'Dedication The staff of the 1963 Hox takes this opportunity to salute an outstanding member of the Roxana High School faculty, Miss Mary Legate. The senior member of the faculty, Miss Legate is finishing her forty-ninth year of teaching this year. Since next year will mark her golden anniversary, the staff feels it would be better to bestow the honor essentially at the beginning of the fiftieth year than to do so after that year is completed. Miss Legate, a native of near-by Grafton, Illinois, attended Baker University in Kansas, and received her B„A from Southwest Missouri Teacher's College in 1919. In 1933, she completed her Master of Arts degree at the University of Missouri, and she has taken post graduate work at the University of Colorado and the University of. Chicago. The first teaching position Miss Legate held was in the elementary school at Marion-ville, Missouri in 1912. High schools in Seneca and Excelsior Springs, Missouri, both benefited from her services before she joined the faculty at Morris, Illinois in 1943. In 1948, Miss Legate began teaching in the Roxana High School, and in 1959 she became head of the English department. The past two years, Miss Legate has been working with the college prep English IV class in conjunction with the television teaching series. It is with deep respect that the 1963 Rox staff dedicates this yearbook to a devoted and unselfish educator--Miss Legate. Creative thinking and action is one of the responsibilities of our educational system. The creative process leads to the development of sensitivity, tolerance and understanding among students. When students participate in an educationally sound art program, which offers unlimited opportunities for their active imagination, they satisfy a basic need--that of dynamic creativity. The creative process is constructive action initiated by individuals or a group which results in visual presentation of original art forms. This process involves discovery, exploration, design and evaluation. 0DefrasU Ke U The Business Education Department, headed by Mrs, Rose Anne Davis, offers those students who want to get a job right after graduation an opportunity to acquire excellent business training. Typing I II, Shorthand I II, secretarial practice, clerical practice, general business, bookkeeping, and the new courses, retailing and notehand, are among the courses taught in the business department. The business teachers at Roxana High are doing a fine job training the students for the business world, and most of the students will be assured of a good job after graduation. S3 ‘Deftasitmetit The teaching of English involves much more than nouns and commas. It involves Dickens, Thoreau, Steinbeck, Hemingway, Tolstoy, and other great writers. It involves speech, vocabulary, spelling, themes, grammar, and poetry. At Roxana, one of two types of English may be taken: business English or college prep English. Business English is designed for those who will be going to work after high school, and college prep English is for those who will be going to college after high school. Practical English is also offered for those who will be terminating their education after high school. All of these courses attempt to prepare the student to communicate effectively with those around him. Pictures on this page show students in the college prep English IV class at work in the library and viewing the television English course. 94 'P ieiyn DefievitHte U In the small world of today, it is becoming more and more necessary for a person to be able to speak and understand foreign languages. The people of other lands not only use a different language, but they also have different customs, different habits, and different ways of thinking. Rather than emphasizing grammar and structure, foreign language teachers have begun to devote more time to understanding and speaking the language. German, French, and Spanish are the languages offered at Roxana High. 95 DefrcvUntCKt The modern high school provides courses to prepare each student for his life after high school. This includes courses for those girls who plan to ruh a home after they graduate. But the Home Economics Department teaches more than merely sewing and cooking. The major emphases in the four years of home economics are human relationships, management of resources, consumer economics, health and fitness, and applied science. These include units in child development, clothing and related areas, food and nutrition, management, and housing and home furnishings. These are designed, however, not only to teach the student how to run a home, but also to provide a basis for further study in diversified fields of home economics. Words from another world? No, just some of the courses offered by the mathematics department. Whether the student is only seeking to meet the requirement of one year of math for high school graduation or whether he wants to build a firm foundation for future experiences in math and science, he will find his pre-college needs satisfied by the math courses offered in our high school. Mathematics not only improves the student's concepts of space and numerical relationships, it also aids him in developing thought processes and reasoning, which he will use in many phases of future life. 98 “P£ctctC tio.K CflG ltvKCM't President Kennedy has inaugurated a Youth Fitness Program. He contends that we are becoming a nation of flabby people and that the remedy for this must be begun while a person is still young. He stresses the importance of a good physical education program in the schools, in order to provide sufficient exercise to keep the students in good physical condition. Such a program is provided at Roxana under the direction of Coach Earl McLane. Not only does the program at Roxana fulfill the state requirements for daily exercise, but it also teaches the student the skills of several sports, including football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, and swimming. It teaches the student good sportmanship, too. This is in keeping with the Presidents Youth Fitness Program. 99 Science Deficvitment The science department at Roxana High is expanding to include more courses. All of the courses have one common purpose. The teachers of these courses attempt to teach the student about the world around him and the laws that govern it. Biology concerns the living things in the world, both plant and animal. Chemistry deals with the composition of all substances and the changes in these substances. Two chemistry courses are now offered at Roxana, Chemistry I and Chemistry II being for the class which completes physics as juniors. Physics is the study of matter and energy, such as heat, electricity, mechanics, and sound. A relatively new course for Roxana, earth science, includes geology, astronomy, and meteorology. With these courses the science department tries to give the student a well-rounded knowledge of the scientific aspects of the world in which he lives. 100 IcCvcutcecC This school year saw the first group of accelerated science students terminate their high school course work. These students, having completed biology as freshmen, chemistry as sophomores, and physics as juniors, tackled a second chemistry course which was arranged to provide their last year of science. The course was divided into three phases each of about twelve-weeks' duration. The first of these dealt with theoretical inorganic and the second with organic chemistry. The final section was devoted primarily to laboratory work andnqualitative cation analysis. Each student was required to determine the contents of unknown solutions. The class met two hours each day. Social Studies D eftasitment The past is a mirror of the future. We study history and learn what to expect in the future. We study civics to learn how our government works and what it stands for, so that we can be better citizens. The other social studies courses--sociology, international understanding, and economics--provide us with an understanding of the people around us, so that we can get along with them peacefully. A sound course in social studies will provide the student with a knowledge of history, both world and American, an understanding of and appreciation for the workings of our government, and an understanding of the other peoples in the world. The 1962-63 school year saw inauguration of team teaching and extensive use of the overhead projector in the social studies department. 102 Washington National Airport 104 9 1 cmiUf 0p yo£ att First Row: Art Tomerlin, Ron Smith, Jim Hickerson, John Gebelein, Keith King, Jim Pile, Kenny King, Randy Clark, Reggie Sparks, Jim Frazier, Gary Wombles, Steve Pritchard, Max Gay, and Jim Blessing.
