Ruboiyor of Omar Khayyam Man multiplied, seporored into groups and filled rhe Earth: generations after generations were born. Nationalities were created, boundaries set up, ond customs ond languoges established, creating barriers among rhe people The discovery of the new world and better and foster meons of trovel ond communications began to break down the long established barriers. People flocked to the new world- — some to get away from their past; others to find peace ond freedom. Afnenco became the Promised Land, the Great Melting Pot, o Utopia, where all people could pursue their dreoms. All nationalities could be- come citizens, and slowly longuoge barriers and nationality differences began to fade. As the world population grew, so grew technology thot dealt with hu- mon problems. Because rhe field of medicine become more sophisricot ed, people became healthier ond life expeaoncy in the 1980 ' s reached 72 years. Machines were invented that could scon the body, finding problem oreos faster than older conventionol methods. The sex and potential prob- lems of unborn babies could be deter mined by the method of omniosenti- sis. Dritoin celebrated rhe first Test Tube baby with the United States quickly following with two of their own, while life supporr mochines ex- tended the lives of many who would otherwise die The promise of generic engineer ing became a reality and o blessing ond a curse Grove problems con- cerning rhe morol issues surrounding rhis breakthrough were discussed rhroughour the scientific community All of these advances created dilem- mas for all oreos of the population People foced choices that hod been beyond their control o few short years ago Where will all of this lead the hu- man race ' Will all of civilization be of one roce some doy? Will oil people be born genetically perfect? Will the overage person be eight feet toll wirh a small head encosing a pinheod sized brain due ro human ' s reliance on the machines erected by high technology? The answers exist some- where in time itself. But for now people continue to enter and leave, rise and foil, ond where they oil go, nobody knows 6 People
