Soo Shin has found the abili- ty to speak several languages a rewarding asset to have. Her command of the German lan- guage provided her opportuni- ty to study in Germany last summer. Soo Shin was born in Seoul. Korea, long after the Korean War had ended. She was elev- en years old when her family immigrated to America. She said the differences between the United States and Korea are vast. We eat more here and live more comfortably. She also stated that most Koreans feel that Korea has no future. There is always the fear of war in Korea, such as in the 1950 ' s. Soo Shin spent a month in Germany as a guest of the German government. She won the chance to go over hundreds of other students. The finalists were chosen after writing an essay in German. The competition was fierce. While there, Soo stayed with a German family, stud- ied at a German school, and toured various places. The highlight of her trip was a visit to East Berlin, where, she stated, The vast difference between East and West was clearly visible. Soo hopes to go into Computer Science as a career.
