Drawing has always been an important part of Richard Ball- hagen ' s life. I have drawn as long as I can remember. Richard is one of Mr. Anderson ' s outstanding students. While cartooning was once Richard ' s favorite form of art, he now leans towards pen and ink, pencil sketches, and pastels. At the present time he is working in pastels. While he paints a wide variety of subjects, he said that he has always found the human form interesting to reproduce in his work. Richard has been recognized for his artistic abilities several times. He has received Certificate of Achievements in his sophomore and junior years, and last year he won the Mc- Donald Award and the Certificate of Achievement for his work. He has entered his work in various contests in the area and received an Honorable Mention for his painting of an old house. In this painting he used pen and ink and pastels. The house was done in light orange with a bit of yellow with detail in ink. Richard has found painting to be a very rewarding experience. Many times I am able to work through my problems by painting ... He also has very high praise for his art teacher, Mr. Anderson. He stated that Mr. Anderson has expanded his knowledge of art and made him more aware of what he is doing. — He has taught me to be an artist. While Richard is unsure if he will be able to make his living as an artist, he stated, I will definitely use it as a hobby.
