Trying to figure out what clothes were in style for Raiders this year was a very puzzling experience, to say the least. Everything from pedalpushers to mini skirts for girls and Izods (cverywherel) to ink-checkered vans for guys, was deemed acceptable by the fashion conscious. Of course, not everyone dressed to achieve a dramatic effect. Many girls continued to wear designer jeans, wool skirts and sweaters, or anything else they enjoyed in the past, updating their outfits with current accessories. Many boys stayed with OP ' s and Levis, leaving the experimenting to the few dashing rebels. Those who decided to go ail out and be different really colored the campus in unique ways. Red and black stripes were everywhere: metalic shoes radiated from under Khaki knickers; and jungle creatures and leaves could be found clustered on unsuspecting shirts. The ultimate color splash, however, had to have been the spectrum of Izod, Polo, and Le Tigre shirts, which were the only fad items possessed by 90% of the Raider population. All styles and colors taken into account, it seems fair to say that fashion ideas this year were very enigmatic indeed, but if the reason behind the trends are considered, the results aren ' t really that surprising. After all, what ' s so puzzling about wanting to express individuality through clothing? People have been doing it for years. 10

The most important and waited for item on campus this year was the enlargement of the gym. The enlargement of the gym had been a long sought-after goal. The completion of the gym. which was supposed to be by the first of October, became a puzzle as October and No- vember passed without its being done. It ap- peared that one needed item was not readily available. While th e new gym will not solve all of Rowland ' s problems, it will provide needed space for assemblies, rallies, and concerts, while providing much needed PE facilities. .-I «.
