Through the news we experienced the brutal and the horrible and the won- drous and the beautiful. The assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat convinced many that the world had gone mad. yet others knew that love could conquer all when Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer were wed. While many questions were answered by the pictures of Saturn and its rings by Voy- ager II. many questions were raised by President Reagan ' s economic plan. The swing of events, like the pendulum on a clock, placed pieces down into history. These made up our world. 1:1 ■y jjrx Ki Jr Lf ?A. fkj(K- The biggest puzzle of all are people. They look different; they act different; and they think differently. How interest- ing life is made because of these diversities. Just think how much time is spent trying to figure people outl I The community of Rowland Heights resem- bles a giant puzzle with hundreds of inter-lock- ing pieces. As each new store or housing tract is opened, new pieces take their place in the already existing outline. We wonder, though, if the puzzle will ever be really completed. Can the picture of any town ever be totally put together when there are so many things that change and re-arrange them- selves and so many people that come and go? We can only experience the changes that occur while we live here and must leave the future to the immagination. M ' i F:1 r ■i 1 i 1 - 1 L 1. .1,1,1 p H 1 . HI6 I i J L -wJ .J _j — ,— I — r The most important and waited for item on campus this year was the enlargement of the gym. The enlargement of the gym had been a long sought-after goal. The completion of the gym. which was supposed to be by the first of October, became a puzzle as October and No- vember passed without its being done. It ap- peared that one needed item was not readily available. While th e new gym will not solve all of Rowland ' s problems, it will provide needed space for assemblies, rallies, and concerts, while providing much needed PE facilities. .-I «. Trying to figure out what clothes were in style for Raiders this year was a very puzzling experience, to say the least. Everything from pedalpushers to mini skirts for girls and Izods (cverywherel) to ink-checkered vans for guys, was deemed acceptable by the fashion conscious. Of course, not everyone dressed to achieve a dramatic effect. Many girls continued to wear designer jeans, wool skirts and sweaters, or anything else they enjoyed in the past, updating their outfits with current accessories. Many boys stayed with OP ' s and Levis, leaving the experimenting to the few dashing rebels. Those who decided to go ail out and be different really colored the campus in unique ways. Red and black stripes were everywhere: metalic shoes radiated from under Khaki knickers; and jungle creatures and leaves could be found clustered on unsuspecting shirts. The ultimate color splash, however, had to have been the spectrum of Izod, Polo, and Le Tigre shirts, which were the only fad items possessed by 90% of the Raider population. All styles and colors taken into account, it seems fair to say that fashion ideas this year were very enigmatic indeed, but if the reason behind the trends are considered, the results aren ' t really that surprising. After all, what ' s so puzzling about wanting to express individuality through clothing? People have been doing it for years. 10 SENIORS SPORTS FACULTY UNDERCLASSMEN CLUBS ACTIVITIES ADS S INDEX Rli y -cfcr ' ' ' Ai r N UH K )cOv x J , You, X Th HK You l £ f 6o c i6 W y. He is currently working on a Los Angeles Bicentennial film, which he hopes to complete before the end of the year. He is planning to submit this film to every contest he can find. If the film is successful, he plans to continue with animation as a career. David Barrington Jose is still a citizen of Argentina and must report in Janury, 1983, to serve one year in the Argentina army. After that he plans on returning to America. I really didn ' t try that hard on the PSAT test. Now, however, she is planning on working very hard on passing the SAT and becoming a finalist in the competition. Kim has found that even being a semi-finalist in the com- petition has opened many doors. Colleges have become in- terested in her, and she even attended a special day at USC for semi-finalists. She feels that her scores will enable her to be more selective of the college she will attend next year. Kim has always kept busy with a variety of activities. She has worked on ASB for three years and feels that it is a very worthwhile activity to do. She is also on the Senior Council and takes an ROP class in banking. While she has very little time for activities after school. Kim does enjoy horseback riding. She has an Arabian gelding, but because of limited riding space, she has shipped the horse to Oregon to the ranch her parents have purchased. Kim has enjoyed Rowland High School. While she has enjoyed getting involved in the activities, Kim also feels her teachers have set a very high standard that she has had to meet. When asked how she feels as a senior, she replied: The best part of being a senior is knowing people and gaining self-assurance . 1 I Phillip Deters Stacey Eastman Caroline Dizon Laura Downey Lisa Dowyak Seniors 39 . 0 Seniors Kimberly Fox Crystal Freatman w Robert Emerson Kenneth Engelbert Cynthia Escutia Keith Ezell Brad Feldtz Burt Feldtz Lisa Fernandez Laura Foerstner Susan Ford Debra Foster Denice Fox Gwendolyn Fulton Ananias Gadia Genevie Galarza Myrna Galvan Cynthia Garcia Dana Garcia Eric Gassmeyer Virginia Gonzales Shelly Geitman Yes, Virginia Gonzalez, Punk Rock is in! This all changed during his fresh- men year at Rowland. His interest in drama came about after a chance remark by Coach Brown after Darryl had read a passage in class one day. Coach Brown asked Darryl if he had drama and if not, thought he should give it a try. Darryl did and has loved every moment of it since. After Coach Brown ' s remark, Darryl tried out for a part in Curious Savage. He won the role of Hannibal, a role that he calls his favorite. He has since performed in six school productions, playing parts from comedy to very serious. He also sang in the production of Oliver, but feels his voice is not adequate for singing. He is currently taking dancing lessons which he feels will make him a more rounded performer. He has not always received support from his sports-minded family, but he feels his dancing and acting are far more physically exacting than sports. Darryl stated that school is what a student makes it, and he has found it to be a great experience. He carries a 3.2 GPA, with psychology and history being his favorite subjects. He is also president of the Thespians on campus and became vice-president of the state chapter his senior year. He plans on attending Whit- tier College, majoring in Theatre Arts. Eventually he wants to act in stage performances; however, he stated, I ' ll take whatever I can get. Seniors 41 The saying Just another face in the crowd cannot apply to Tom Mortimer. Tom, who mea- sures 6 ' 8 , will always be A face above the crowd . Tom has always felt his height has been an advantage in sports. He played football for two years, playing on the varsity team when he was a Sophomore. He quit play- ing football, however, stating: It ' s too dangerous. His interest in basketball began in the 7th grade, and he has played on the varsity team for three years. Tom is not only very tall, but very agile also, an asset necessary for basketball. Because of his ability, he has been approached by several colleges that are interested in him. When asked if his height ever hinders him, he said, Yes. Driving new, smaller cars is one-, being stared at while standing in line is another; and having to wait six months to get a pair of Levis that fit is yet another. Tom feels very strongly about school. School comes first and other activities second. A great deal of credit goes to the teachers at Rowland for changing my attitude towards school, thus, changing my life. They made school important to me. His main goal is to obtain a degree in Business Manage- ment and go into the family business. He did state, however, that if the opportunity arose for him to play some professional basketball, he would. 42 Seniors Paul Menius Lori Merstik Seniors 43 Maureen Merriles Thomas Miller Frances Mora 44 Seniors Ronald Mesias Connie Molla Sergio Moraton X i Caroline Metcalf Lynn Montanio Leslie Morris Cynthia Metcalf Sandra Montano Tom Mortimer Kirk Mustain Melinda Nabor James Nacey Ben Metz Monica Miles Denise Miller Christopher Montoya Gregory Montoya Teresa Moon Cynthia Moore t Sharon Moy Dawn Muramoto Lynn Muramoto Daniel Murphy Dawn Nokes Marian Oliver Selene Orona Seniors 45 Christopher l .m«i n 1 N Lori Palmer Daniel Pena Jeanne Payne Julie Payne 46 Seniors Steven Perez Seniors 47 Tracey Perry Merritt Peterson John Piazza Kimberly Phillips Alma Picardo Scott Poland Chris Montoya and Rick Salinas work at being professional craftsmen. Richard is one of Mr. Anderson ' s outstanding students. While cartooning was once Richard ' s favorite form of art, he now leans towards pen and ink, pencil sketches, and pastels. At the present time he is working in pastels. While he paints a wide variety of subjects, he said that he has always found the human form interesting to reproduce in his work. Richard has been recognized for his artistic abilities several times. He has received Certificate of Achievements in his sophomore and junior years, and last year he won the Mc- Donald Award and the Certificate of Achievement for his work. He has entered his work in various contests in the area and received an Honorable Mention for his painting of an old house. In this painting he used pen and ink and pastels. The house was done in light orange with a bit of yellow with detail in ink. Richard has found painting to be a very rewarding experience. Many times I am able to work through my problems by painting ... He also has very high praise for his art teacher, Mr. Anderson. He stated that Mr. Anderson has expanded his knowledge of art and made him more aware of what he is doing. — He has taught me to be an artist. While Richard is unsure if he will be able to make his living as an artist, he stated, I will definitely use it as a hobby. Soo Shin has found the abili- ty to speak several languages a rewarding asset to have. Her command of the German lan- guage provided her opportuni- ty to study in Germany last summer. Soo Shin was born in Seoul. Korea, long after the Korean War had ended. She was elev- en years old when her family immigrated to America. She said the differences between the United States and Korea are vast. We eat more here and live more comfortably. She also stated that most Koreans feel that Korea has no future. There is always the fear of war in Korea, such as in the 1950 ' s. Soo Shin spent a month in Germany as a guest of the German government. She won the chance to go over hundreds of other students. The finalists were chosen after writing an essay in German. The competition was fierce. While there, Soo stayed with a German family, stud- ied at a German school, and toured various places. The highlight of her trip was a visit to East Berlin, where, she stated, The vast difference between East and West was clearly visible. Soo hopes to go into Computer Science as a career. She then plans on returning to Korea to teach for a while, but she will return. America is now my home. It is compounded of segments known as time that rush quickly by and disappear somewhere - no one knows where. And all that is left of time-past is lodged safely in my mind. As 1 sit at my desk waiting for time to pass, I realize how quickly the last four years have gone. I reflect on the growth that has occurred within my classmates and myself. I ' ve gained abundant amounts of knowledge and self assurance since the first day of high school. I recall how afraid I was at the beginning. The vastness of the school and its atmosphere over- whelmed and yet excited me at the same time. As time passed, adjustment came. I was still excited, but not over- whelmed. My Sophomore and Junior years passed by in a blur, leaving few standout memories, but much growth. My senior year was by far the most memorable segment of time, but passed the most quickly. How sad - the last rally, the last football game, the last dance, and the last hurried lunch on the mall. As I glance at the clock on the wall, I see that the hands have moved again. I get up, fasten my gown, walk to the mirror, and adjust my cap. I take one last look, for once again time has passed, and another segment has fallen into place. I say a last goodbye, knowing that time past will live forever in the recesses of my mind. While the returning coaching staff led the team through the first part of the season, the last three games were led by a new coaching staff. Coach Killingsworth was requested to resign due to several irregularities in following CIF rules and regulations. To express indignation over the requested resignation, coaches Bet- tar, Olay and Drake also resigned. Brad Manning, however, felt that the team deserved better treatment and elected to stay on and coach the remainder of the season. Coach Manning stated that even though the team lost all league games, they still had class. Their handling of problems both on and off the field was praise worthy. They played with a Never Say Die attitude and held on to the Raider Spirit in the face of great odds. It was a pleasure to work with this team, because their team spirit and pride is what athletics is all about. Coach Hale said, This team had the best attitude of any team I ' ve ever coached. They also improved the most. Prior to the tournament the team had been playing average ball, but something came together at Covina, and the team performed almost faultlessly. The most outstanding game was the 49-47 victory over Los Altos. The last part of the season, however, proved disasterous, as the team lost their last four games. Their overall league record was 1 wins and 8 losses. Coach Stevenson said the comradery that was shown between team members was outstanding. Even though we didn ' t win as many games as we wanted, the players were always a pleasure to be around. Even though their record was poor, there were several outstanding performers on the team. Most Outstanding Player award this year went to Tom Mortimer, who also cap- tured the Most Valuable Player award at the Covina Tourna- ment. Eddie Dominquez and Todd Gudger also received awards at the Covina Tournament. Most Improved player awards this year went to Todd Gudger and Richard Martinez. Varsity Basketball 89 I. Diana Zigars, the varsity coach, stated: It has been an outstanding season. We have achieved all the goals that we set for ourselves at the beginning of the season. One of those goals was to obtain a berth in the CIF. This goal was accomplished when the team tied for second in the league with a league record of 8 wins and 2 losses. The losses were to Walnut and Wilson. In the first round of CIF playoffs the girls were pitted against Bolsa Grande. This game almost brought the house down when Rowland edged Bolsa out by I point. This win placed Rowland in the second round of the playoffs. All of the girls contributed to a fine season, but the results would not have been as good without the efforts of the two girls who were chosen Most Valuable Players. Mr. Revis, the coach, stated: There will be a very close race with Los Altos for the league championship this year. The team possesses many outstanding players. In the 1981 season the team won many awards and recognitions. Eris Meeks was league champion, placed 3rd in GIF, and placed lOth in the state overall. Aaron Meeks was league runner-up and placed 12nd in GIF. Rob Fernquist and Ken Ikari placed on the all league 2nd team. The most improved golfer on the team is Troy Learning, while Mike Hernan- dez was the Most Valuable JV player last year. Led by Andy Casana, Mi- cah Embry, Craig Tippings, John Piazza, and Keith Sheppard, the team was a sure-thing to finish among the top three in league play. Coach Hale states: Var- sity will be hard pressed to win a meet this year. The team, though, held high hopes for the season, as the team as a whole possessed more depth and the best swimmers had faster times over-all than in previous years. Outstand- ing swimmers on the boys team are Gary Gray, who is a shoo-in for CIF finals, and Jose Salviati. who is a possible CIF contender. The girls varsi- ty swim team, who was shooting for a 2nd or 3rd in league competition, was a much stronger team this year. They also possessed more depth, partly because of the twelve returning swimmers, 5 of which had received letters last year. Outstanding swimmers on the girls team were Jennifer Owens, Monica Courtney, Debbie Tiechman, Sonya Stamper, Sandy Salinas and Clair Kawagishi. Swimming 107 HIGHER STANDINGS r t f H 108 Badminton The second year of coed badminton created changes in the balance of players. More boys went out for the team and sometimes proved to be the stronger players. Barbara Grund, team coach, commented. The girls are still strong, though, because of past years ' experience. Top seated for girls singles is Debbie Tardival, who started her league season with all wins against Los Altos and Wilson. Outstanding girls doubles are Lily Lemos and Renee Ruiz. While the boys are new and have needed time to develop their talents, Kirk Mustain and John Zabola have shown their ability by becoming top boys in doubles. Races were still run separately, but all meets and all practices were com- bined. The boys track coach. Coach Brown, said of his team. They were much more well rounded this year - better in field events than last year. Outstanding players for the boys were graduating seniors Sean Armstrong, with 2 school records, and Steve Perez, with 4 school records. In girls track the strong contenders were Erin Eicher, Denise Burton, Cindy Haye, and Tiffany Maturo. Their coach, Jeanne Koerner felt that the team grew in ability this year, with many strong distance runners and fine hurdlers added to the tt?m. She emphasises, however, that al- though nrong players help win points, it is the entire t fort of the team that puts it all together for a win. Track 115 THE FUZZBALLERS ff Man the nets was heard each day this year, as Rowland ' s tennis team took to the courts every day to hone to perfection their backhands, fore- hands, and lobs. Departing seniors left this year ' s Tennis team somewhat weaker, but the team is so competitive, this edge should disappear. Coach Livingston stated: Realistically our goal was to place 3rd. and we were hoping for a nd place in league. The goal of most team members, though, was to beat Walnut. A variety of reasons exist for this high rating. The largest number of students ever attended the Homecoming Dance — of course the Buck-aBuck had something to do with the crowd-, over three hundred students were able to attend various con- ferences throughout the year; and the greatest number of students in the history of the school participated in clubs, organi- zations, and athletics. The most notable change for the better-, however, was the scheduled assemblies. Due to problems the past few years assemblies had been cur- tailed. This was lifted this year when the addition to the gym was completed. A.S.B. scheduled seven assemblies throughout the year, much to the delight of the stu- dents. These assemblies included an Elec- tric Show, the singer Jim Bolden, the hyp- notist Joyce Sharpe, and a Stuntman Show. The gym enlargement also made it possible for the entire student body to attend an assembly together for the first time. All of this was possible because of an excellent A.S.B. Cabinet led by Andy Casana, presi- dent. Mr. Revis, Director of Student Ac- tivities stated. The 1981-1982 Cabinet would like to thank all of students for giv- ing us your support and allowing us to serve you. ASB 317 A VERY GOOD YEAR I Letlerm n Row I Sean Armstrong. Jose Salviati. Cindy Morrell and Debbie Gruner conduct a meeting during lunch In the past, the letter clubs have been best known on the Rowland campus for their unique and interesting new mem- ber initiations. This year, however, proved to be an exception, because there was not even one shocking rumor spread, and the new members just appeared quietly in their jackets, ready to participate in the club activities. These activities included the selection of the athlete of the month, coach of the year, and all sports awards. They also sponsored the popular Donkey Basketball game. Because of the rescheduling of assemblies, the letterclubs were able to again play Keystone Cops, minus the hats. And as usual, they took care of the trophy case. Lettergirls 219 EXCELLENCE IN DANCE Modern Dance, which is one of the newer clubs on campus, is also a class that any student can take. It is open to all girls and boys interested in performance. stated Mrs. Sandra Gurney, the sponsor and teacher of the group. The class provides an outlet for creativity and excellence in dance. Another func- tion of the class is to provide choreography for the school. Mrs. Gurney, who is in charge of the choreography for the musicals, urges her students to try out for these performances. In order to get the students used to performing in front of people, the class exchanges performances with the Chamber Singers. This year additional instructive was given to the ad- vanced class by Joyce VanZant, a semi-professional dancer. To further their knowledge of dance, the class attends Ballet and jazz and modern dance events in Los Angeles. The expertise of the girls was displayed at their Advance Dance Concert in the spring. In order to do this, the club sponsors a variety of events that would lead to more knowledge of the German Culture. They discovered many German traits when they visited Alpine Village and Solvang. However, one of the most memorable occasions was the German Christmas party where they tried to recreate an authentic German Christmas feast. To become better acquainted with their counterparts in Germany, many of the club members have pen pals in West Germany with whom they correspond on a regular basis, while some of the German II students attended a German Camp to learn more about Germany. The star member of the club this year was Soo Shin. Soo spent last summer in Germany where she studied and toured various areas of Germany. Mrs. Grabler, the club advisor, feels that students always benefit from a knowledge of other cultures that exist in our world. 324 German DIFFERENT CULTURES  i • 1 pLdI3y p JNfll ' .i- WmilKI — r ■MRS I. The International Club not only seems to bring students of different cultures and backgrounds together within the club, but it also shares its special mem- bership with the rest of the school. The most obvious example of the clubs special place on campus is International Day, which was held in February this year. International Day brought exchange students from surrounding high schools in the, area to Rowland where they joined forces with our own ex- change students to hold discussions in various classrooms on campus. All sorts of topics were presented, from life in a foreign country to current world situations and issues. Everyone involved felt the experience was educational and very enjoyable. The club also held several fundraisers this year, among these were a car wash, skate night and game shows. A trip to Disneyland ended the year. ■- 4 International 225 YEAR OF SUCCESS The Drama Club and Thespians rang up another year of success in this school year. You Can ' t Take It With You, the fall play they produced, was an enormous success at the box office. The play demanded a considerable amount of effort, as the Drama Club was responsible for make-up and staging of the play. They also assisted the choir in producing the musical Mame. The Thespians, the drama honor society, hosted the Conference of Thespians of California this year. The conference was held at Chapman College in Orange and had as the guest speaker Jerome Lawrence, the author of the musical Mame. The school year doesn ' t end the activities though, for several of the Thespians are planning to attend the International Conference in Muncey, Indi- ana in June after school is out. At the banquet this year many of the members were given awards for their achievements through- out the year. Some of the outstanding performers in the group are Darren Boyett, Reva Curran, Darren Hammers, Jean Swift, and Darryl Tidwell. At the end of the year Mr. Jordan appeared pleased as he tucked another successful year away in his memory book. 236 Drama Nf ' Iv ' 1. Thespian Troupe: Row . Beverly Kaback, Jim Burkhart. Under the sponsorship of Jim Cappuccilli. this group aided spirit rallies and games, sold ail sorts of items to raise money, and held a sensational Swap Meet in the parking lot of the school. While Mr. Cappuccilli received a few grey hairs, the girls basked under his antics, beratings and general guidance. Meet on the baseball field be- came a favorite phrase for the girls in the group, and all secretly hoped he would be their exalted leader next year. 230 SSR « MANY CHANGES Many changes took place in Girls League activi- ties this year. Under advisor Donna Malbon the girls changed many traditional activities with a great deal of success. Their Christmas Formal was held in January this year, and instead of having a Winter Queen only, a Winter King was chosen. At the same time class princesses were matched with class princes also. The Slumber Party was revived, but was held in the spring instead of the fall. The girls also provided their traditional activities, such as guides at Open House and Honor Guards at graduation. Patricia SanRoman stated: We are very pleased with our activities this year. It was a successful year. 1. Girls League. Row I: Susan Lance, Jeanne Duchanin. Row 1-. Shari Ramos. Mrs. Hynes, the advisor for these two years, feels the newspaper has been very successful in presenting the news of the school to the student body. The paper has also provided a forum for the students. Many students have used the paper to express their views concerning various aspects of school life. Student leadership for the paper this year has been spread among several editors. These student editors are Julie Carpenter, Kim Carter, Pat Mathews, Becky Sailer, and Patricia SanRoman. Once the editors have the paper ready for print, it is sent to Courier Graphics in Claremont. The paper is then assembled, proofed, and printed on newsprint so it more resembles a professional newspaper. Many im- provements were evident in the publication this year, the main one being that it came out more often and was more regular. Mrs. Hynes stated that it was a pleasure to serve the student body in this manner. A well informed student body becomes a student body who partici- pates more in school life. 2i2 Raider Express 1 r— 1 PROVIDES PRINTING • 9 I. Raider Press: Row I: Mike Dwyer, Mike Garcia. Whenever a program, a booklet, flyers or any other material is needed, Mr. Gonzalves oversees the typewriting and the running of the presses as the students learn the rudiments of the printing business. There is, however, time enough for individual products as can be seen by the picture of the boys holding up a shirt imprinted with a skull and cross bones. While the class entails a lot of hard work, there are moments that make the class enjoyable as well. However the most important aspect of taking this class is that many graduates find that they are able to obtain a job in the printing profession. Raider Press 233 ■■■1 The musically inclined and vocally gifted meet in HI every school day to practice, improve, and sharpen their vocal skills. These students make up the Rowland High School Choirs. Under the direction of Mr. John Catanzaro, they have again completed a successful year of concerts, festivals, competitions, and school productions. Support for the choirs was derived from a variety of ways. One of the major events was the Second Annual Fashion Show and Spaghetti Dinner. After the dinner, students, parents, and facul- ty members modeled the latest fashions. The high point and conclusion to the show was a full scale wedding party. Singing Christmas cards were again a popular Christmas event. For 50c students could send a singing Christmas carol to any of their friends-via the choirs. This year the choir sponsored the Stu- dent-Faculty Talent Show, called Rowland on Broadway. It played to sell-out crowds both nights it was presented. Mame, the spring musical, was their biggest endeavor and largest success of the year. It was presented in the new facili- ties of the gym and was warmly received by the large audiences that attended the performances. Again as the past, a tribute to Mr. Catanzaro. I. This year the girls were chosen by panels of teachers who judged the girls on poise, routines, and spirit. This method of judging led to a more representative squad than in previous years, the new advisor. Vera Benoit, has also instigated many changes. The rules governing the squads are more strict, which has improved the attitudes of the girls. Also the squads feel they work together better than before. The half-time show presented by the band was Impressive, but the highlight of the evening was the announcement of the 1981-1982 Home- coming court. Tracy Perry was crowned queen to the delight of the crowd and rode from the stands in a horse-drawn carriage. After the game there was a dance at the Pomona National Golf Course and the turnout was so large that many were turned away from the door. Those inside danced to the music of Schu-Roberts Audio and had the op- portunity to ride a mechanical bull. While the format of dress-up days and noon contests remained the same, the cor- relating of Friday ' s Western theme. Homecoming activities, and the Homecoming Dance was new. Participation in the noon time activities was at an all time high. Pie Eating. Rootbeer Chug-a-lug, Tarzan Call, Ice Blocking, Limbo, Hoola Hoop, and Bubble Gum Blowing were some of the contests students could enter. While the root beer and pies were delicious, the bubble gum turned out to be a sticky affair. The athletic prowess of many was discovered as they raced across the grass in the Ice Blocking or twirled the hoop on their waist or bent over back- wards to slip under the Limbo stick. The Tarzan call was in a class all its own, though. For it gave some students the chance to relieve their frustrations at school by yelling. When the week was finally pieced together, a picture of a spirited, fun- filled week emerged, one that will be remembered for a long time. Spirit Week 255 A THEME A DAY • • Each day of Spirit Week was given a dress-up theme. The week began with 50 ' s Dav. a favorite theme since grade school. Safari Day was new to most students, but somehow everyone who dressed up man- aged to get khaki and leopard skins together to make this day most memorable. Hawaiian Day was the coldest day, but the temperature didn ' t stop the mtrepid Raiders from wearing grass skirts and flow- ers. Crazv Day must have set the communitv wondering, as some strange outfits, indeed, walked down Otterbein on the way to school. Friday was a little bit tamer than the other days because it was Western Day. Students who had not dressed for the other days found the courage to wear a cowboy hat for this one. While the clothes worn during Spirit Week may not have come out of Vogue Magazine, the students who dressed proved to the rest of the student bodv that Rowland does have a certain amount of spirit; that IS needed is a little coaxing, and it will come out (all over t place). al he 256 Spirit Week I. The zany antics of grandpa and the Sycamore family amused and delighted the sold out crowds that attended all performances. Grandpa ' s tolerance towards his family and his attitude towards money enabled his family to pursue their desires and dreams no mat- ter how ridiculous they seemed. The strange, different type of family life proved to be very embarrassing for Alice Sycamore, who wanted to marry Tony Kirby, the son of a very rich, but very proper family. A night in jail reconciles the Kirby ' s and the Sycamores and everyone lives happily ever after. Many out- standing performances were given by the cast. Among them was Lynn Rogers who played Gay Wellington, a lush. Her per- formance brought down the house at every performance. Mr. Jordan, the teacher advisor, was very pleased with the success of the play. « V I Darren Hammers (Mr. Carmichael) plays while Chrisime Charles (Esse) dances. 1 Jim Burkhart (Tony Kirby) and Reva Curran (Alice Sycamore), to- gether again 3 Jean Swift (Mrs. Sycamore) paints while Richard Sanchez (Mr. DePeena) poses. 4 Vince Chavez (Grandpa) expounds to Parryl Tidweli (Mr. Kolenkov) 5- Donna Harrison (Mrs. Sycamore) concentrates on her art. 6- Jim Burkhart (Tony Kirby) and Amber Boone (Alice Sycamore) discover their love. 7- Lynne Rogers (Gay Wellington) plays a magnificent drunk. 358 Fall Play Fall Play 359 ' I DO. The inarriage took place in a flower bedecked dimly lighted Hideout on January 13, 1982. The guests had been ushered to their seats at 11:30 A.M.. while soft tiiusic played in the background. They had gathered together to witness the marriage of Judi Prussak and David Ruiz. Reggie Thomas officiated at the ceremony. Others in the ceremony were: Melanie Leigh, Maid of Honor; Mike Hernandez, Best Man; Brides Maids: Thresa Sarrategui. Myra Galvan, Marci McEwen, Dayna Mullins. Ushers: Jerry Munoz, Randy Ivey, Gabriel Murillo, Allen Pi- card. After the ceremony, a receiving line was formed, and the guests were able to congratulate the couple. At the reception, Judi and David cut a traditional wedding cake and exchanged a tradition bite, after which they took the traditional turn around the dance floor. The guests were then served refreshinents and encouraged to join in the dancing. While everyone enjoyed the events. The music for the evening was provided by Scandal. The music was excellent, an opinion held by the students and chaperones alike. The dance floor was spacious, enabling plenty of room for the dancing. This year ' s dance began a new tradition for Rowland High School. Instead of just a queen, a king and a queen were chosen to reign over the festivities, and a prince and prin- cess for each class were chosen. Sean Armstrong became the first king in the history of the school, and Rebecca SanRoman was chosen as queen. The royal couples for the classes were: Freshmen Prince Chris Gallego, Princess Heidi Ventura; Sophomore Prince Bobby Markowski, Princess Erin Fausone; Junior Prince Craig Tippings, Princess Ella Bosrock; Senior Prince Andy Casana, Princess Mary Schlichting. At the stroke of twelve, the crystal shattered and royalty changed back to students again. Winter Formal i63 BUCKED SNORTED The Homecoming Dance was a far greater success than anticipated, so much so that the room in which the dance was held could not accomodate the over- flow crowd. The Western theme and the Mechanical Bull added excitement and fun to the dance. The bull was set up on the dance floor, and any would-be cowboy or cowgirl could plunk down their dollar and challenge the bull. The bull, being so popular, mono- plized the crowd the entire evening. Crowds sur- rounded the roped off area to watch the bull do its stuff, it bucked and snorted, gently to some, but also throwing the oft unwary rider to the mat below, much to the delight of the audience. The D.J., Ronnie Roberts, held court at the opposite end of the floor, with a small area inbetween that proved far too small for the huge crowd that had come to the dance. The evening began winding down at 11:30 when the bull bucked his last, and saddle-sore cowboys and cow- girls gingerly left for home, spurning the round dance that ends all Western dances. 264 Homecoming Dance Homecoming Dance 265 FROLIC AT HALLOWEEN Halloween was celebrated Friday, Oct. 30 at Rowland this year. A costume contest was put on by A.S.B. at lunch time, and the judges were Mr. Aney, Mr. Robinson, and Mr. Mathers. Prizes were given to the best dressed teacher and the best dressed student. The competition was fierce as participation was at an all time high. Mr. Gullet was dressed as a sheik with a harem of four exotic looking girls. The sheik and his harem won the teachers prize; it was a plastic pumpkin filled with candy. The winners of the student prize were Mark Van Patten and his friend Mark Guzman. They were dressed in red and black cloaks with skeleton masks. They won a large bag of halloween candy. All of the students enjoyed the fun and frolic at hallow- een this year. I. For the first time in years all of the stu- dents could come to one assembly, and there was a stage and curtains and lights: almost as good as a real auditorium. The first assembly was an Energy Assembly. It didn ' t sound excit- ing, but once it started, everyone was interest- ed. The second assembly was a return of the famous Jim Bolden. He was, as usual, outstand- ing. His rendition of One Tin Soldier will be remembered for a long time. Joyce Sharpe then brought her talents to school in January, when she put a group of students through some very unusual actions. One major noon-time assembly was the FMOC assembly. The gym was packed with students who were awaiting the results of a very close election. All in all the assemblies certainly added spice to a very bland diet of school.
