They organized and presented a new slide show for Freshman Orientation this year, making high school easier for Freshman. They also provided more entertainment and activities Noontime activities were expanded, Volleyball, spirit week and lunchtime bands were enjoyed by all. The assemblies provided were well organized and enjoyable. The highlights of the year were Awards Night, Winter King and Queen, ASB Convention and, of course, the Homecoming Activities. Penny Davis, Jeanette Mora, THEATRICAL PLAYERS Rowland ' s Theatrical Players entertained the school with a variety of performances this year. They again put on the Brown Bag theater during lunch for the students and worked on and acted in the fall play and the spring musical. This year the club started a Mime Troupe which is sponsored by the Thespians, a drama honor society, Joni Bridges, the club president, said the year was very successful. 1. Row 1: Barbara Birdwell. This, however, did not dampen their enthusiasm. Led by Mr. Boumuck, the hearty group took to the slopes as soon as the snow fell. A tangled time was had by all skiers. 1 Ski Club: Row 1 Lisa Wall. One their main activities was a trip to Catalina Island where members were able to scuba dive, snorkel, or relax on the beach. They also viewed the Lozarium show and went on picnics. The highlight of the year was their annual trip to Joshua Tree Monument. Because expenses were so high, they also learned how to earn money. SFC members wait while they try to get the boot running. CSF had a very busy year. They held o variety of activities to earn money to give their annual scholarships. They sold balloons during the basketball games, conbucted the jail during Western Week, and sold concessions during the convention. GIRLS LEAGUE The Girls League sponsored activities were a major part of the school world. While the Slumber Party and Christmas Formal provided many happy hours for the students, the league also served the school by providing guides for school activities and honor guards at graduation. The class is busily printing, the posters, bulletin, programs and newspapers needed by the school. Printing was made earlier this year because of the addition of two new machines— on IBM electric typewriter and a photo typesetter. 1. Because not enough students signed up for the class, the class was combined with a ninth grade English class. Also Lisa Flores, the advisor, was only on campus two periods a week, while getting the paper printed has always been a problem, Few newspapers were published because of this. GUITAR Rowland ' s Guitar Club had a very enjoyable year. The members met during lunchtime to share their music with one another. Cassie Birdwell is lost in a world of music. DANCE Lunch time dances and after school dances sponsored by the Dance Club this year gave students a chance to show their Disco steps. The club also brought KUTE 102 on campus in December to aid in the Christmas Can drive, A trip to Magic Mountain was the club ' s special outing this year, 1. Two of the members are state officers— State Vice- President Dave Strieker and State Secretary Chris Taylor. Their annual Christmas Can Drive v ent over the top. They co- sponsored a band on campus to aid in the food can drive. The highlight of the year, hov ever, was their participation in the various competitions held in the state. This is the most that have been on campus at one time. The main focus of the club this year was International Day, which was held on March 11th. On that day foreign students from schools around the valley came on campus to talk about the various countries from which they came. VARSITY FOOTBALL 52 Varsity Football Varsity Football 53 Rowland High ' s Varsity Football team finished the season with no wins. In all their garmes only two touchdowns were scored. The team suffered from a lack of strong returing players, fielding mostly rookies this football season. Because of this, fumbles and interceptions seemed to haunt the team the entire year. Coach Rawis is looking forward to a more experienced team next year. The team placed three runners-Frank Riley. Steve Perez and Ray Cruz on the first team All-League, Outstanding honors this year went to Steve Perez who holds the best time (15 44) in the valley- Steve also won the Sierra League Varsity top honors, placed on first team all-valley and is MT. SAC ' S sophomore Leather Lunger of the year. Because it was their first year, playing experienced teams from other schools proved to be a challenge. Although the team lost all their league games, they were not discouraged. Suddenly boots, hats, jeans and bandanas along with other western itenns became the uniform of the day. Students could drink in the Saloon, get hitched at the hitching post, play their skill at poker, or attepmt any number of various activities that organizations on campus sponsored. Some of the most popular were the jail and the wheel of fortune. People also enjoyed the Science Field Club and their antics each noon on the grass area of the campus. F.M.O.C Pep sponsored Favorite Man On Campus was a highlight of the month of February. The girls again took their Sadie Hawkins ' option and chose the boys they would most like to dote. The Pepsters chose Robert Zeeman: Girls ' League chose Danny Carrao: Girls ' Athletics chose Jim Swift; Bandettes chose Scott Jones, and SSR chose Bo Burch. The dance was held in the gym on February 15th with the music being provided by Tiger. During an intermission, Gilbert Lozano, last year ' s F.M DC,, announced the winners— Robert Zeeman, runner up, and Bo Burch, F.M.O.C. Bo was soundly congradulated by his escort Maria DeCorpo and the other girls on the stage. UNREALISTIC DAY Unrealistic Day was based on the Punk craze in music that developed a following of people who dressed in bizarre outfits. Weird legs, strange glasses, neckties on unusual shirts, oddly colored hair streaks, and a profusion of buttons on jackets, blouses, and T shirts roamed the campus. Dave Rios DJ ' d the New Wave in the Senior Mall, where anyone properly dressed was admitted. FALL PLAY f The fall play presented this year was The Dairy of Anne Frank, with the Little Theatre becoming the attic in which the Frank family hid for two years. The play was double-cast with Mike Bourque and Frank Riley as Mr. Frank and Diana Carroll and Tracy Blackburn as Anne Frank. Because the scheduled four performances were sold out, a command performance was given. The festivities included an assembly, where this year ' s court was introduced, and the dance, which was held in the gym. King Danny Roddy and Queen Stacy Legg were crowned during intermission. The events began with the Homecoming assembly, where the court was introduced, the balloting which took place during lunchtime, and culminated with float competition, introduction of last year ' s queen and the announcement of this year ' s queen. The float competition was keen this year. The Class of 1982 won the sweepstakes award, while the Class of 1981 took 2nd place. The Homecoming court, after being chauffeured around the track in Corvettes, were met by their fathers and escorted down the red carpet to the platform where they were joined by last year ' s queen, Tomi Sollozzo, and her escort, Dennis Hubert. The excitement was felt by all when Mr. Aney announced Sabrina Murphy as First Princess and Dianna Carroll Homecoming Queen. Karen, a mid-ternn gra- duate, has attended Rowland schools all her life. She has tak- en a variety of business and vocational classes, maintain- ing a 3.92 GPA in high school. Karen is very active in church work and is currently attending MSAC where she is majoring in business. She is planning on be- ing married at the end of sum- mer. Liberal Arts This year ' s Liberal Arts award winner is Colleen Sechrest. Col- leen, who has attended Row- land schools all her life, has maintained a 3.86 GPA during high school, Colleen, who has taken all college prep classes, is also working towards college credit by taking AP history, AP English, and Calculus. In her ju- nior year she received awards in Honors Biology and English Honors. She stated that English and science were her favorite courses. Colleen presently lives with her family, which includes two sisters— Jennifer, 11 and Laura 18. Colleen plans to at- tend the University of California at Irvine and major in medicine. Music This year ' s Music award win- ner is Ann LeFay. She has at- tended Rowland schools and has been active in the music programs. She has been a member of the marching band all four years of high school and has been the drum major during her junior and senior director of the band this year. Ann has won numerous awards for her drum major work both in parades and solo competi- tion. Ann plans to go on to school to become a Dental Hygienist or a Lab Techni- cian. She also wants to con- tinue to pursue her interest in music. Math Science The Math Science award win- ner is Mary Dunn. Mary has been an outstanding student all through school. She has already won an award in chemistry and is currently maintaining a 3.97 GPA Her classes at school are all college prep, which include three AP classes for which she hopes to receive college credits. Mary has been very active in CSF and the Science- Field Club. She also enjoys sports and played on the Varsity Volleyball team. Mary ' s family include a brother, 29, and a sister Kerry, 15. She plans on a career in the field of science. Scott Jones Scott Jones has been on the Var- sity Basketball team for three years. His achievements include All League 1st Team, 2 years, All San Gabriel Valley Team, All C.I.F. Team, and Most Valuable Player award. Scott also enjoys surfing, skiing, and working out. He plans on at- tending a four college where he will major in business and continue his basketball career. Kurt Oshima Kurt Oshima has been ac- tive in gymnastics all four years of high school. He was voted Most Valuable Player two years and was Sierra League Champion in All Around and Highbor, Kurt enjoys judo, playing the piano, ana going camping. He will be attending Stan- ford University in the fall, ma- joring in business. While there he will continue his gymnas- tics. ' ■Diane Looker Diane Looker has been very active and won many awards in athletics. She was voted Most Valuable Player in tennis and Softball. She has also been named on the San Gabriel Val- ley 1st Team and All GIF 2nd Team for basketball and the All League 1st Team for softball. Diane plans to attend Gal Poly, Pomona on a basketball acho- larship, majoring in Business. ■i Derek Rice Derek Rice has played on the Wo- terpolo team for three years. He has been on the First Team All League twice, voted the Most Valuable Player twice, and has been placed in the Hall of Fame. He plans to at- tend UG Irvine in the fall, majoring in Bio-Sciences. He hopes to qualify for the U.S. Woterpolo team and play in the 1984 Olympics, Chris Lindblom Ghris Lindblom has received many awards for her athletic ability. In vol- leyball she placed on All League 1st Team four years and was Most Valu- able Player in 1979, In basketball she was All League 1st Team four years and on the All San Gabriel Valley 1st Team two years. Ghris enjoys all sports and music. She plans to at- tend Golorodo State on an athletic scholarship. She will be majoring in Forestry.
