MARK’S 843 LINCOLN STREET SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH 84102 DEDICATION Among the schools admitting this year’s seniors were highly selective colleges and universities all over the country, including several Ivy League institutions. The class is very pleased with these results and agiees that much of this success can be credited to the work of Mrs. Patricia A. Goldsmith, our college counselor. Pat Goldsmith came to Rowland Hall-St. Mark’s last year from a job as a highly esteemed college admissions officer at Harvard University. Her background gives her invaluable insight into the college admissions process that has benefited stu- dents immensely. In addition to this knowledge, her background provides her with many connections and much influence. Mrs. Goldsmith’s enthusiasm for her job is evident. Her individual attention and concern have helped students in many areas from planning college tours, to writing college essays. Seniors appreciate her openness and honesty and subsequently value her opinion. Mrs. Goldsmith pushed students to their highest potential without allowing them to overstep their ability. She did her utmost to assure acceptances at “safety” and “reach” school alike. Mrs. Goldsmith is proud of each student’s acceptances, to say the least. For her accomplishments, the yearbook staff would like to dedicate the 1988- 1989 Hallmark to Pat Goldsmith and thank her for her many hours. When we consider that she alone completed an average of four to five recommendations for each senior in addition to the rest of the work her job requires, the thought is overwhelming. Our thanks and gratitude are thus expressed to a most indispensa- ble member of the Rowland Hall-St. Mark’s School community. We have ad- ded a color fold-out group photo of the illustrious senior class and have changed some pages so that our book could be the best yearbook ever. Many members worked hard after hours with enthusiasm and dedica- tion to bring you this book, and we hope that you love it as much as we do! Thank you to everyone who helped, and a special thanks to MaryAnn Rees, our faculty advisor and friend, for her guidance, exper- tise, and always-welcomed sense of humor. -Sarah Culp Editor: Sarah Culp Layout Editor: Niki Tipple Copy Editor: Betsy Mason Business Manager: Sam Palazzolo Photography Editor: Stew Ellington Photographers: Luther Ligh t Robert Hyun Cari Johnson Staff members: Katie Beck Debbie Kochenour Masamichi Iwata Mikel Barcena Cindy Bentzley NEWSPAPER ' Phe Rowland Hall-St. Mark’s Gazette was issued monthly this year under supervision of advisor Bar- bara Boardman and editors Linda Lai and George Scott. The staff, which ranged from twelve to eigh- teen members, produced the newspaper completely in-house this year. The entire process, including re- porting, writing, typesetting, and layout, was per- formed by the students. The Gazette was almost eco- nomically self-sufficient this year. The goal of the staff was to win, for the third consecutive year, the Utah Journalism Education Association Critical Ser- vice Best Newspaper Class 2A award. The members worked to receive a Quill and Scroll award as well. 43 DEBATE The debate team was once again successful this year largely due to the coaching skills of Dr. Carl Sturges. Assistant coach, Frank Langheinrich, helped lead the Lincoln-Douglas team to success. The team spent many hours after school prepar- ing briefs and speeches to compete until late on weeknights and on weekends. The number of tro- phies awarded overwhelmed both coaches and team members. Both the seventh and eighth grades took a trimester writing class in the lab and used the time to write stories or essays or to work on class assignments while learning word processing. High school Plnglish teachers often took ad- vantage of the writing lab to allow their classes to work on writing projects on the computers. Marjorie Coombs was the coordinator for the lab and had the help of Mrs. Doxey and Donna Eagan. 51 MIDDLE SCHOOL RETREAT On Friday, September 23, the seventh and eighth graders and their Peer Counselors joined for the an- nual Middle School Retreat at Mountain Dell. It was a day of sheer fun and enjoyment. It gave the new RHSM students a chance to ask the eighth graders questions that no one else could answer. The stu- dents participated in many fun activities such as relay races, capture the flag, volleyball and many others. Everyone had a wonderful, unforgettable time. by Sally Mason 53 TETON SCIENCE SCHOOL 1 L ’ 1 I Thirty-odd ninth and tenth grade students left their way of life with junkfood and T.V. to live in the Greater Yellowstone Eco-system. They went to Teton Science School to live, learn, and eat health food as they never did before. The long days of hiking and short nights of sleeping went by fast. The counselors taught them everything from how to have fun with animal scat to how the fires affected the living and non-living things in the burn sites. The group arrived back at RHSM with facts, figures, and fun as memories of living in the great outdoors. Luther A. Both the coach and returning team members are look- ing forward to a strong team next year. p«lll - «. I ' 1 74 ROWMARK I Rowmark Ski Academy returned for its sixth year in 1988-89. The 1988-89 Rowmark athletes were Melissa Austin, Mikel Barcena, Ma- samichi Iwata, Craig Kilbane, David Kong, Whitt Lee, Kozo Otsuka, Niki Tipple, Kristine Wamba, Jason West, Anders Wollan, Jiro Bannai, David Cowen, Kelly Hannah, Brani- gan Sherman, Sarah Heilbrun, Dar- ren Hicks, Jesse Lowe, Kitty North- rop, Kathy Ogles, Katie Poinier, Matt Ramsey, Rudy Riet, Jeremiah Thompson, and Hakon Bjercke. by Rudi Riet ri. BOYS’ BASKETBALL 78 Coached by Danny Shwam, the boys’ basketball team over- came their weaknesses to im- prove steadily throughout the season. The team played well despite their small size and in- experience; they look forward to the coming season. This year’s team consisted of John Bagley, Eric Selekof, Dustin Marshall, Wood Moyle, Char- ley Lind, Rick Rauschmeier, Steve Harmsen, Justin Peter- son, Price Ellington, John Kleinschmidt, and Scott Nuismer. 79 GIRLS’ BASKETBALL n The girls’ basketball team, coached by Laurie Carpenter, had a good season despite losing all but three of last year’s players. Even though they fell short of their goal of “a 500 season,” they have high hopes for next year. Returning play- ers were Amy Hoeppner, Ali Wilson, and Mika Kato. New players were Jennifer Jones, Jessica Lux, Gretchen Mathis, Sara Rock, and Ellen Erlingsson. Though my feelings will be different a year from now, part of tbe difference is you. Because of you, I am a different person, and tbe person I will grow to become, with or without you by my side, will bave gotten there partly because of you. If you were not in my life right now, I could not be who I am right now, nor would I be growing in exactly the same way. Much of what I grow towards and what I change within myself has to do with what I respond to in you, what I learn from you, and what I understand about my feelings in the dynamics of our relationship. I do not worry about our future together since we’ve already touched each other and affected each other’s lives on so many levels that we can never be totally removed from each other’s thoughts. A part of me will always be you, and a part of you will always be me. That much is certain, no matter what else happens. • we u v6 V6U DAD • And. henrc r THMKSh) Oil my ■fn ' tixl ,. Reflecting back at me. She defiantly won ' t wear a dress, Nor does she care if her hair is a mess. Dolls resting on her bed. She ' s on her knees playing with trucks instead. Shawn had her first driving experience at three. And wrecked our gray 260 Z. Then elementary school came her way. With boys is all she would play. Motorcycles and soccer were her joy. No ballet for this little boy . Fortunately she joined friends in Open Class, As her T-shirt said OC ' s A Blast . She learned to accept people for what they were, Even girls became her friends for sure. Junior High was exciting you see, They made a mistake and placed her in boys P.E. To her name Shawn she added an a , Shauna sounded quite ok. Ninth grade graduation suddenly came. Wearing a white dress she didn ' t quite look the same. She seemed to have changed so suddenly, A beautiful woman she turned out to be. Racing on a pair of skis. She excelled quite rapidly. Ribbons and trophies filled her room for sure. There is just no place to add any more. The sophomore year was personal growth for her, 1986-87 she would try to endure. Sometimes life can be hard to bear. But she was strong and what she learned she would share. Then one day she said, I ' m sick of it all, I want to go to Rowland Hall . Acceptance brought her a huge smile. She always went that extra mile. Late nights studying for her French test. She seemed to get very little rest. Drink lots of coffee to stay awake, Hope you don ' t make many mistakes. Senior year can be alot of work yet fun. Applications to colleges -- Le t me be accepted by one . Afternoons looking forward in getting the mail, You have been accepted! Go give them hell . Finally came the big graduation night, The future really does look bright. This time seemed to come so fast, As she reflected back in the past. CONGRADULATIONS SHAUNA! WE LOVE YOU!
