This year has been an exciting one for all of us. With 485 students, and three classes at every grade level, we are fully utilizing our new wing. The gym was renovated to house our new gymnastics program. The library has been improved with the addition of an office, and new lights and radiators, thanks to a Wiegand Foundation Grant. On the playground our new lawn areas have received a little nursing to get off to a good start. The students have been involved in many activities. We started the year with Kathleen Zmuda holding the children spellbound with her storytelling. We then celebrated the Bicentennial of the Constitution, when our students placed flags around the neighborhood. In October twenty Soviet citizens visited us. To prepare for their visit we learned a great deal about the Soviet Union. We all enjoyed singing Russian songs and visiting with our guests when they came to the wonderful breakfast prepared by the Home and School Association. In October we celebrated Magic Month . We were pleased to have Elizabeth Winthrop speak to the students and autograph her books at the Book Fair in November. The preschool students presented a special Christmas program for their parents, while the older students interpreted the theme I ' m In Charge of Celebrations through music and movement, including adaptions of the books The Polar Express and Arrow to the Sun. The winter sports program, for children in full day kindergarten through grade six, included horseback riding as well as skiing, roller and ice skating, bowling, gymnastics and swimming. Cur spring Putting on the Arts and Family Festival programs provided another opportunity to share our talents with the school community. Lower School students had many interesting off-campus experiences. Sixth graders camped in southern Utah, fourth graders hiked in Little Cottonwood Canyon, the fifth grades participated in the Festival of Trees. Class field trips included visits to the arboretum, aviary, zoo. Children ' s Museum, planetarium, and Museum of Natural History. Parents were important to our successful year, helping with such events as class parties, the Book Fair, conference days, the Family Festival, and giving a great party for the faculty. Both teachers and parents gained new insights from Jane Healy, author of your Child ' s Growing Mind , and Jay Casbon, who visited in the winter to share his ideas about self-worth. The school continues to be a vibrant and exciting center for learning, We look forward to summer and wonderful Space Camp and Renaissance experiences. We hope you all have a marvelous vacation. 2
