SENIOR CLASS HI TORY The twelve year clock of our school career has fmally run out of hours and mmutes and seconds Each hour represents a year each year a page of our l1fe As the mmutes of each hour relentlessly tlCk on so have the days of each school year has tened a swlft completmn of th1s tlme cycle Now that the hour hand wearllv trudges to ltS destmed end and before lt starts ltS twelfth hour for the class of 1958 let us pause and rellve those hours and years we have spent together ONE O CLOCK In September a group of slx year olds some tearful and a few a l1ttle bolder than the rest hopefully crowded 1nto Rowe Amboy and Mon roe school for the f1rst tlme carrylng pencll boxes erasers and crayons W1th new faces added and the loss of a few of our number we were gradually becommg the graduatlng class of 1957 At fxrst some of us were tlmld and shy bu after a few days were strangers no more and anythmg but shy' We fmally settled down and most of us learned that yes was yes and no was no that Be qulet meant Be qulet and Stop doesnt g1ve the green llght Sandv Robm son was the f1rst to learn the hard way that ln a well regulated f1rst grade one speaks onlv when one IS spoken to or 1S asked to speak We st1ll chuckle at the memory of Sandy squattmg l1ke an mdlgnant Slttlflg Bull after Mlss Hellman had hoxsted hlm to the top of the flllng cabmet Re member too the day that George Gee Sandy Rob mson Larry Walla and Glenn Kobermk played tag up and down the alsles of the classroom? An 1nc1dent endmg ln the paddllng for four to the tune of the yardstlck' Well alwavs remember the gay partles and sparkllng Chrlstmas we had that year all the sweet and bltter that made up the fxrst grade TWO O CLOCK THREE O CLOCK Each year flew swlftly by as lf carrled by the strong hand and SWlft feet of a Mercury FOUR O CLOCK What a busy year th1s was for us strugglmg to learn that nine tlmes s1x equals flfty four and seven t1mes nlne equals sxxty three' It was much more 1nterest1ng to know the bov than to know the John and boy are nouns We had several ln trlcate systems of passlng notes Although we spent much of our tlme passlng these notes we st1ll had Engllsh lessons to prepare About th1s t1me p9I'SOIl31ltl6S started to come to llght Larry Beers worked ln valn to prove that he was the Romeo of the fourth grade How he dellghted 1n dunkmg our halr 1n the blue black 1nk' He was also noted for many other lnfamous antlcs borrowmg penclls whlch never were re turned puttmg gum 1n all the glrls halr and of course teasmg At Monroe the ambltlous fourth graders proud ly presented a Chrlstmas play A Horn for John ny starrlng kindly EISIE Brewster as the grand mother and rambunctlous Jay Hogle as Johnny In th1s year too an ep1dem1c of measles swept Monroe School and many of us spent several not so comfortable days 1n bed FIVE O CLOCK Another hour had gone bv w1th astomshmg sm-ed and the grapevme reports that at Amboy B111 Black and M1lton Maurer dreaded the exer tlon requlred for gym class Consequently they found a nlce hldlng place behlnd the curtalns on the stage We wonder lf they really emoyed themselves crouching uncomfortably for thlrty mmutes behmd the heavy st1fl1ng folds of that curtam At Monroe xt seems that J1m Mooney George Felch and several glrls Cshall we leave them un named J spent thelr noon hours playlng Hlde and Seek xn the school buses Sounds Just l1ke J1m doesnt ltq SIX O CLOCK SEVEN O CLOCK A we entered our new seventh grade rooms we notlced many new faces and we learned that we had been Jomed by several puplls from Arn boy And as tlme passed we got to know and en 1ov these new fr1ends and to make many lastmv frlendshlps We w1ll always remember the dav when we as many other prevlous classes had done had to reclte Wlllxam Wadsworth s xmmortal l1nes I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on hlgh o er vales and hllls When all at once I saw a crowd A host of golden daffodlls I often thxnk that we as students W1 hed that we possessed the poet1c mslght that Mrs Snvder seemed to possess about l1fe It was 1n the seventh grade too that Larry General Slmpson and R1ch ard Chlck York v1ed for the dubxous txtle of N01Sl6St Cut Up of the Class an unenvlable tltle at best EIGHT O CLOCK Thxs year was fllled wlth act1v1t1es and pro the helm of our paper the Junlor Reporter we were able to publlsh a newsy gossxpv paper One of the most memorable occaslons of th1s year was Courtesy Week when each student had to be on hxs very best behavlor Many of us ended that perlod as the laughlng stock of the day by per formmg embarrasslng acrobatxcs 1n the gym Our basketball team and squad of cheerleaders were the prlde and Joy of our elghth grade The team went undefeated ln all thelr games and we the noncombatants as well as the team were bltterly dlsappolnted to lose the flrst all lmportant tourna ment game Our favorxte class was Mr Edwards spellmg class for we all looked forward to the day he would read our orlgmal sentences Confl dentlally I thxnk he had Just as much fun readmg and laughmg at them as we d1d Remember too those dreaded pantomlnes and demonstratlons we had to glve ln Engl1sh class Im sure Dorothy Pyle w1ll never forget her embarrassment when her well prepared demonstration ended ln one b1g flop' To the stralns of the Recesslonal we ended our grade school days and were look1ng forward to the four golden years ahead of us NINE O CLOCK We were freshmen not yet V1k1ngs but fresh men' We agreed that one of the most enJoyable day was that certaln September day whlch was known to all freshmen as In1t1at1on The stunts we had to perform were crazy but I thmk the outflts we had to wear were even more outland lSh Chr1st1an Dlor would never approve of burlap sacks 1n a present day fashion show' At last we could proudly bear the coat of arms of a true Vxk mg' Whlle under the able leadershlp of Presldent George Gee Vlce Presldent Barbara Hale Sec retary Gayle Moyer and Treasurer Walter Remke as freshmen we partlclpated ln varlous act1v1t1es cholr band and numerous clubs The boys whose valor went undaunted m the fleld and on the counts were Jlm Horwood Larry Walla . 1 , Y . SENIOR CLASS HI TORY Larry Beers Mllton Rlng Larry Slmpson Rlchard York and Dean Thompson Ar1s Anderson and Sandra Smlth were our gxfts to the cheerleadmg squad By the end of the year we were trans formed from nolsy frxvolous Elghth graders to nolsy frlvolous mnth graders As the clock drew nearer 1tS cycle we eagerlv looked forward to the next hour when we would be sophomores TEN O CLOCK We approached th1s year wlth a varlety of feelmgs-some sad some gay But to the dxsmay of our class we heard that we were to be sepa rated After meetlng our homeroom teachers we recovered from our despalr Mr Halleck and Mr Carlson proved to be both capable and trustworthy guldes as we Journeyed on the road to adulthood For our f1rst blg project Wh1Ch was so well organ lzed by our offlcers to be named later we held the Freshman Sophomore Dance Durmg th1s tedlous week we found that we had a class of Eager Beavers These offlcers Presldent Dean Thompson V1ce Presldent George Gee Secre tary Judy D1ckson and Treasurer Nancy Bennett proved to be worthy of the trust placed m thelr hands Durmg th1s year Charlene Spauldmg and Barbara Hale found that Hookey does not pay They learned too that xt was no fun bemg perma nent corner PISCCS ln Mrs Lynch s study hall Tell lng vour plans to others ln advance sometlmes backflres' Oh Yes-there was always Caesar I thmk that we surely must have pollshed h1m off or has Mrs Kxtchen come up w1th a Llfe Restorer' And those geometry theorems' Surely Mlss Tobln thought we would never get them and ourselves stralght ened out The athletes for th1s year were the same as last year wxth the addltlon of J1m Mooney D1ck Garstenshlager Tom Hall Glenn KODCPHIK Wal ter Remke and Sandy Robmson Ar1s Anderson Sandra Smlth and Janlce Grlffey furnished the femlnme decor to the basketball court' The clock seemed to plck up speed as we ad vanced further 1nto hxgh school and we became better acqualnted w1th the ways and w1les of man ELEVEN O CLOCK JUHIOFS and upperclassmen at last' We were greeted that September mornlng by the beamlng smlles of Mrs Lynch and Mr Dawson Of course Mr Dawsons sm1le was soon to fade as we pre pared to present our f1rst b1g nroJect the Jumor play Teen Tlme The blot dealt wlth the prob lem that a group of teenagers had ln trymg to bulld a teen haven for the1r cxty The cast ln cluded Ar1s Anderson Rlchard York Nancy Ben nett Peggy Chlpps Sandra Smlth Larry Beers Larry Walla B111 Black Leona Nme Joan Balrd Mldge Stevens James Horwood Larry Slmpson Gavle Moyer Genelle Roberts George Hale Tom Hall Rlchard Barnard Judv D1ckson and Treasurer Sandra mlt The teams were st1ll graced wxth the talent and experlence of the prevxous years wlth George Felch and Ronme Goodlel added For a repeat year Ar1s Anderson Sandra Smlth and Janlce Grlffey lent thelr pep and pulchrxtude to the bas ketball struggles The cholr Journeyed to Levxttsburg where we recelved a superior and then to Columbus where we recelved an excellent ratmg Three Junlors had the dlstlnct honor of belng elected to the Natlonal Honor Socxety Nancy Ben nett Sandra Smlth and Judy D1ckson A sprmg comes so comes the prom at least at Rowe and as usual the Junlors were quite exclted about th1s gala event We chose Fantasyland as our theme You can xmaglne the chaos that was caused when we trled to hlde Donald Duck and Mlckey Mouse from the ever 1nqu1r1ng semors By the end of th1s hectlc week we and Mrs Lynch too were on the verge of a nervous breakdown but somehow all managed to pull through and to en Joy the evenmg The coronatlon of the klng and queen cllmaxed the evening Then after the sus pense was over we settled down to enjoy our dancmg Thls Junlor class as well as all the succeedmg Junlors owe Mrs Lynch and Mr Dawson many thanks for thelr klndness and patlence As the eleventh hour drew to a close we looked forward to the f1nal twelfth hour TWELVE O CLOCK Our homeroom for our last hour at Rowe was gomg to be the study hall It seemed to many of us that lt was Just a few months ago that we were freshmen ln the same room The people who were elected to guxde and lead us through our last and probably most 1mportant year were Presldent Jlm Horwood V1ce Presx dent Rlchard York Secretary Judy D1ckson and Treasurer Sandra Smlth Our flrst task was the Freshman Inductlon Ceremony Wh1Ch takes the place of the 1n1t1at1on of former years Each letter 1n V I K I N G S IS a symbol representmg the true meanmg of the word V1k1ngs Th1s solemn ceremony makes an mcomlng freshman proud to be a Vlkmg The teams were as usual well represented wlth the same boys as were on the teams ln the previous years Ar1s Anderson Sandra Smlth Jamce Grlffey and Judy Curtls carried the mega phones for the semors The semors also d1d well m all the clubs band and cholr Of course the b1g obJect1ve of any senlor class b9S1d6S the annual IS ra1s1ng money for a class trlp Many hours have been spent at concess1ons at basketball games at bake sales and 1n other fund ra1s1ng act1v1t1es Then fmally we semors proudly presented our play To Blush Unseen dlrected by Mrs Kltchen The cast mcluded Peggy Chlpps Sandra Smlth B111 Black Dean Thompson Tom Hall Annette Jones Larry Beers Joan Baxrd Ar1s Anderson Dorothy Pyle Milton Rlng Charleen Spauldlng Ruby Courtenay and Walter Remke What a tlme we had m choosxng a place for our trxp' Consldermg Washmgton Detrolt and Chl cago we spent a number of perlods lookmg at pamphlets from these cltles The semors elected to the Natlonal Honor So clety were Dean Thompson and Peggy Chlpps As we were measured for our caps and gowns and ordered our cards and 1nv1tat1ons we began to reahze how rapldly the year was drawlng to a close We st1ll had Class Nlght Baccalaureate and Commencement to plan and carry out Although the hands of our clock are slowly drawlng to the flnal hour th1s lS not the end of our educatlon but merely the BEGINNING of a new and more exc1t1ng era of learnmg We w1ll never forget our teachers and we especlally thank Mrs Kltchen for all her help and guldance through th1s our most xmportant year the twelfth hour recorded on our school clock We leave Rowe wxth mlxed
