SHWUI? CLASS HISTURY who are taking the flnal step m our publlc school educatlon before departmg mto the trou bles of the adult world flnd that many memor1es of the twelve eventful years return to us We clearly reallze that the Class of 1956 Rowe Hlgh School IS only one of the hundreds of graduatmg classes of Amerlca at thlS tlrne but we w1sh to commit to wrltlng a few of our astoundmg memor1es Twelve years ago ln September 1944 a group of temporarlly shy but st1ll mlschzevous s1x year olds crept more or less sllently mto the halls of Rowe Amboy and Monroe schools Our parents to be sure wanted us to acqulre an educatlon As we dlscover many new acquamt ances and the strangeness began to wear off we found that school was somethmg to be proud of and nothmg to be feared and that on Saturday and Sunday we could be lonesome The three Rs became fun and the flrst grade teacher a second mother who helped us w1th boots and coats re fereed our battles and banadaged our wounds And so wlth the sympathetlc yet flrm hand of Mrs Wrlght we began our twelve years of learn mg The days and years flew past at an unbellev able speed and we found ourselves promoted to the fourth grade Thxs was a memorable year of frollc for us at Rowe Amboy and most of all for those of us at Monroe for the fourth graders of Monroe Elementary School proudly offered the dramatlc but near traglc presentatlon of Goldl locks and the Three Bears Our own RUSSELL HUMPHREY growled convlncmgly as Papa Bear and PAT COLE portrayed one of h1s famlly I can Just plcture PAT and RUSS as bears Soon Father Tlme took h1s toll of the days and we found ourselves full fledged flfth graders The flfth grade was a full year of baseball basketball for Rowe Amboy and Monroe and was hlghllght ed by the annual Fall Festxval at Amboy School Th1s was a full n1ght of fun and ha1r ralsmg pranks whlch would have appealed greatly to ROBERT PUNKAR who was dolng h1s share for young and old at Rowe but lt ended only too soon and we once agam resumed our da1ly studles September rolled around once more rn our school l1fe T1me had passed quickly and we were now seventh graders under the xron hand of Mlss Moseley at Amboy and Mrs Snyder at Rowe Th1s was the year that we recexved the news that we were to be transferred to Rowe the comlng year therefore It would be our last year at our Alma Mater Amboy Tech Seven whole years we had waxted for graduatlon only to be let down by these fatal words At that tlme It sounded terrlble but we soon found after a short stay at Rowe that xt was just as wonderful here as at Amboy Here was met many new friends whom we soon treated llke age old compamons Rowe was such a huge school we actually had two elghth grades whxch were under the supervlslon of M1ss Moseley and Mr Edwards Thxs was a year of skatlng partxes the state exams and courtesy week durmg whlch many people pald for lmpollteness by duck walkmg around the gym Graduatlon rolled around sooner that anyone had antlclpated The honor of Val1d1c torxan was bestowed upon JUNE CHRISTOPHER at Rowe and upon PAT COLE at Monroe Thus After an all too short summer vacatlon flfty two freshman assembled ln room 211 under the supervlslon of Mr Humphrey We were lookxng forward to the work and play of hlgh school years ROBERT DALRYMPLE was elected presxdent and JUDY WHITNEY v1ce presldent of the freshman class w1th MARY PARKER as secretary and ROBERT DODGE as treasurer BILL LYNCH GEORGE HOGLE GEORGE MALLORIE and JIM SPECHT were our representatlves on the basketball squad The fun of hlgh school started almost Immediately w1th 1n1t1at1on and all 1ts won derful galety The day of 1n1t1at1on we could have been seen performmg the endless tasks such as p1ck1ng up paper from the lawns and sweepmg the busses wlth tooth brushes Wlth th1s blg n1ght over we agam tackled the chore of gettxng our rooms and teachers stralghtened out Hlgh school was a wonderful new exper1ence for us all especlally forelgn language As I remmlsce I see the scene to be about the Chrlstmas Season durlng Latm I class Mrs Hundertmart was substltutlng for Mrs Kltchen who was to have an operatlon BILL LYNCH had acqulred some sneezmg powder and we . . . . . , - 1 1 , , . . , . . . . , , ' Y 1 , . . , ' .
