SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Let us turn back the clock for a few moments and re l1Ve those amuslng traglc and sometlmes world shattermg events of our f1rst seventeen years On that warm September day 1n 1941 many SIX year olds w1th eager sh1n1ng mornlng faces were gomg to thousands of schools all over the Un1ted States for the very flrst t1me Those equlpped wlth tab lets crayons and penc1l boxes at Rowe were D1ck Hogle Cnuck Harke Jerry Curt1s LOIS Mook Nancy Gaus Clara Woodworth Amos Blakeslee Donna Benton DlCk Blood How ard Nelson Ruby Gee and Carol Cook I Amboy also fond mothers were hustl1ng then well scxubbed youngsters as the fa1n1l1ar yellow school bus lumbered down the road Those that cl1mbed 1nto that bus we1e Del mas Bennett Tom Dean Chuck Pennlman Pat OConnor Judy Hammond and Anme Chartron Can you 1mag1ne Delmas Bennett and Chuck Pennlman chas1ng Pat O Connor Judy Hammond and Ann Chartron Wlth a long taxled very dead mousel The shr1ek1n0 g1rls found the safest refuge 1n the Amboy school the g1rls restroom At Rowe LOIS Mook held top honors for belng un beat upable She proudly boasted and w1th grade he could not defeat 1n a wrestl1ng bout In the w1nter t1me Amos Blakeslee and Jelry Curtls amused themselves by tr1pp111g the g1rls on the ICE Slldes caus1n0 those colossal plle ups at the end of the Sllde Then the shr1ek1ng laughlng and somet1mes cry 1ng glrls would proceed to dlsentangle tne1r legs and feet only to rush back 1n llne to start for another tumble Remember those 1nterest1ng storles Mrs Pay ne told us 1n the th1rd grade about the exper1ences of her son and hlS budd1es 1n th war' Partlcularly memorable IS the one of t1e p1lot who senslng he was gomg to D9 shot down WlShed he could stay h1gh 1n the clouds for he felt that th1S was as close to Heaven as he ever could be Undoubtedly Ruby Gee and Carol Cook w1ll recall that dull afternoon spent under the te chers desk The 1n1t1al plan was to play the usual tlCk11Hg game but Mrs Paynes patlence ran out and we were crouched there several monotonous hours Nancy Gaus and Howard Nelson always earned a sllver star for gettlng 100 per cent on spell1ng tests How frustrated the rest of us felt' KldS from Amboy well remembex that George W3Sh1l1gt0D play presented at the annual Halloween Festlval The maln characters were George WHShlHgt0H played by Judy Hammond w1th her lavlshly pow dered ha1r and Martha portrayed by Pat O Connor who sported a styllsh s1lvery pom padour Surely the Washmgtons would have shuddered at that presentatlon Sally Ceeder no doubt recalls the use of M15 Stevens ruler What a stlng It left on thc knuckles huh Sally' Remember those two pals Howard Nel son and D1ck Hogle who took turns as DTCSI dent of our room dur1ng the seventh and elghth gradeso H1ghl1ght of the seventh grade nd a fond memory of MISS Spmk we1e the danclng lessons she gave us M morable too was her spectacular fly1ng tackle of Orvllle MIX one day on the play ground' It seems that football always was her favor 1te sport It dldnt take long for the boys to learn not to blow plast1c bubbles durlrg devotlons 1n M1 Woods room Each tlme 216 he would Slt down oh h h so o o easy Now we can apprec1ate Mr Wood s pat1ence and sternness and wonder what he tnought of us m1scl11evous as we were Rowe s soft bal teams that traveled to Amboy heard It Sald that Amboy IS the best school 1n Am boy We agreed then and st1ll do Im sure that Nancy Gaus and D1ck Hogle shared Mrs Snyders enthus1asm for Longfellows Evangelme especlally the Prelude begm n1ng Thls lS the forest pr1meval the mur mu11ng DIHCS and the hemlocks lt seems they can Stlll quote those l1nes E1ght memorable years had passed and now we found ourselves takmg that fatal step 1nto hlgh school Coach Nesha home room teacher and class sponsor greeted forty seven new faces that f1rst mormng 1D 1949 As freshmen we were QUICK to learn that nappmg 1n study hall 1S as punlshable as makmg H0156 lll the l1brar5 but how we en Joyed watthmg the upper classmens at . ,, . .
