Senior Class History It seems only a few short years ago that this Class of '51 took its first big step toward these days just before graduation. Here we stand at the top of those twelve steps-ready to start out into an dult life of our own choosing-industry. college. or the armed forces. Let's go back to that first momentous step. 1t's a sunny day in September 1939: thirty-three clean outfits are donned. thirty-three heads of hair are combed and thirty three shining faces enter the first grade at Rowe School This sane thrng was happening at Farnham and Amboy too I know the thought of our forming the Graduating Class of 11 never entered our heads though we know rt was the fondest hope of each of our parents Permit me to mention a few of the amusing incidents Believe it or not r the first grade at Amboy Gary Evans had to be paid before he would kiss Shirley Redding when they were principals in a mock wedding Joyce Spencer was Shir ley s bride s maid Shirley and Joyce have always been fond of each other Could you ever imagine Tom Picard s being too coy to ask to leave the room Well he was the result was rather embarrassing Tom did win honors for himself howes er when the teacher asked him to count for her He had to be stopped when he reached one hundred After all the rest of us wanted our turn Also Ronnie Punkar enJowed a chat with Mommle and a glass of milk at re cess Its convenient living close to the school sometimes I cant see where thit glass of milk made him grow any can you Can you imagine Al Gee and Gordon Griffey in knickers Bonnie Nlckels and Sally Shuster in knee socks or Greta Bristol in high laced shoes Maybe not now but back in the good old days that was the style The next few years skipped rapidly along but they were by no means vxast ed We spent our time learning multiplication studying history making n xx friends and also fsad to tellh taking turns occupying isolated corners when we so ualrzed too much with our neighbors There are a few more humorous incidents which occured from time to tim before we entered high school Do you remember when Tom Picard and Dayton Greenfield tripped while carrying a big kettle of chocolate destined to be part of our fifth grade party refreshments' Instead the boys christened the lower hall vtrth Do you remember how scared we were xx hen it was rumored during the sum mer of 46 that we were going to have a male home room teacher I think now we can really appreciate Mr Woods strict teaching and guidance It was during this year that we took our I Q test before entering high school and met a fevx stranger from Amboy who were to be our classmates rn the years to follow Soon after thr we received our diplomas and bade elementary school good bye Besides the students who came from Amboy and Farnham Pat Hale rorred our clas from Conneaut Lois lNelson from Cleveland Mary Ann Bukr from St 'tlarys Shirley Redding from Conneaut Bob Horwood from Amboy Jim Whitman from West Virginia James Bayer from St Nlary s Jim King from Alrqurpna ar 'l Tom King from West Springfield In September 1947 forts tuo scared boss and girls took another br step to ward graduation This step was toward the freshman room To our amazement xx nad no home room teacher X15 gosh Hate we been so bad that no teacher would urally the high light of this xear was the rnrtratron And did tle boss look rl with baby bottles and bonnets ar d rrdtng xx ooden hr bbs horses and the Lirls xx ea rig dresses fue inches above their ' nees F rghtened as we were ue re ll drd e rox exery minute of the ordeal xx that ue were full fledged freshman xt l cted I'orn Picard rr L Ponnie Punkar xrce pre ide rt Xcrnon -Xtkrn s retarx ela Lrtxxrlcr e were well represcnttd rn sport x cr on r ex t Bob Horxxood Nlarrx more ol u rorrrcd tht thrrr L ior se c x it L ' - . r , . . .
