CDR JOHN E. SHINNERS CDR Shinners, USN, was born in Coving- ton, Kentucky, in 1918. He received his commission as Ensign in 1941. His present rank dates from January 1952. Prior to assuming command of the ROWE in September 1953, he held command of Sub Chaser 51324, Destroyer Escort-1, De- stroyer-9O, Destroyer Escort-184 and De- stroyer E scort-274. Aboard the USS .MAURY QAGS 165 he served as Executive Officer from June 1949 to July 1950. From August 1950 to June 1951 he attend- ed the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island. From July 1951 to August 1953 he served on the Staff of the Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic. He married the former Miss Catherine EAPTAI Ann Metz in 1942. The Shinners have three children -- two daughters, Patricia and Kathryn, and one son John Edward Jr. Born in Wichita, Kansas, in 1918, LCDR Zim- mermann received his commission in 1942, com - pleting Naval Reserve Midshipman School at North- western University. Ordered to the USS KNIGHT QDD-6635, he par- ticipated in landings in North Africa, Sicily and Salerno. As Gunnery Officer of the AULT QDD - 6981 in 1943-44, he received a letter of commen- dation from Commander Destroyer Force, U. S. Pacific Fleet, for meritorious conduct during anti-aircraft action against Japanese Kamikazi attacks . LCDR Zimmermann was released to inactive duty in 1946, and married the former Miss Donna Lee Hamm in Wichita, Kansas. Recalled to active duty at the onset of the Ko - rean War, he was assigned to Charleston Group, Atlantic Reserve Fleet, for the reactivation phase , and later, to the Staff of Commander Battleship Division TWO in USS NEW JERSEY QBB-623 . LC DR Zimmermann joined the ROWE as Executive Officer in February 1954. LCDR EDWIN J. ZIMMERMANN EXECUTIVE EEEIEEE
