oim FIRST DUTY KUREA PATIHIL Ten days of Korean patrol gave two memor- able moments . . . First the ROWE was called upon to escort two Japanese transports carrying Thailand troops . . . with the Thailand prime minister aboard . . . And second the ROWE took part in a search for a downed military aircraft that resulted in a rescue aircraft being towed into harbor by the ROWE . . . thought to be the only instance of a destroyer rescuing an aircraft by taking it in tow on the open seas . . . to the right and below are actual pictures of the rescued rescue plane and of a rescue boat picking up survivors . . . night prevented pictures being taken of the plane while in tow astern the ROWE . . . Following Korean operations we transited the Shimonoseki Straits to Kobe, Japan . . .

in the shadow of World War Il Ten- shun . . . . . . the Philippines parade for Independence MA ILA ON THE 4th OF JULY Operations with Task Group 70. 2 afforded the opportunity for liberty in Manila on the 4th of July weekend . . . and since it fell on a Sunday we celebrated Philippine Independence Day then . . . and our own Independence Day on Mon- day . . . in all it made for a long weekend of fun and celebration . . . several of the ship's com- pany had the opportunity of speaking and shak- ing hands with Philippine President Magsaysay whose yacht was tied just ahead of our own ship . . . we noted with interest ruins remaining in Manila and Manila harbor from the past war . . . gidd-i-yap ! at the pier in Manila the Rock of Corregidor
