Her keel was laid on 7 Dec ember 1942. The destroyer was named to honor Lieutenant John Rowe, USN, who volunteered and took part in the expedition under Lieutenant Stephen Decatur Jr. , commanding the U. S. ketch IN- TREPID, which entered the harbor of Tripoli on 16 February 1804 and destroyed the former U. S. frigate PHILADELPHIA. A ROWE wasxgplaced in commission 13 March 1944 at Harbor Island, Seattle, withCommander A. L. Youngflr. , USN, as the first commanding officer. D Service Medal-for participating inthe Kurile Islands Operations, the Okinawa Gunto Operations d th an e THIRD Fleet Operations against Japan. She also earned the Navy Occupation Service Medal, Pacific, for her activities in occupiedJapanese waters during the period of 2 September to 19 N - ' ovember. 1945. By directive datedJanuary 1947, ROWE was placed out of commission in reserve, attached- to the U. S. Atlantic Reserve Fleet with her berthing area at Charleston, South Carolina. uring her Wor1d'War career, ROWE earnedthree battle Stars on the Asiatic-Pacific Area On 20 September 1951 the ship was brought out of mothballs , and recommissioned 5 00t- ober 1951 C ' , . S. Arthur, Commander, USN, Commanding. From 26 August 1952 until 3 Feb- ruary 1953, ROWE was in the Charleston Naval Shipyard undergoing extensive structural alter - ations. The 20 mm and 40mm mounts were replaced by 3 f 50 caliber mounts and the old stick mast gave way to the new tripod mast. Following the shipyard overhaul, ROWE participated in Midshipman Cruise Baker with T k ' ' ' ' ' Oslo, Norway. as Group 40. 2 in 1953, visiting Edinburgh, Scotland and On20 September 1953 CDR C. S. The book that follows is a partial recounting of the cruise, the ship and the men aboard her. CDR JOHN E. SHINNERS CDR Shinners, USN, was born in Coving- ton, Kentucky, in 1918. He received his commission as Ensign in 1941. His present rank dates from January 1952. Prior to assuming command of the ROWE in September 1953, he held command of Sub Chaser 51324, Destroyer Escort-1, De- stroyer-9O, Destroyer Escort-184 and De- stroyer E scort-274. Aboard the USS .MAURY QAGS 165 he served as Executive Officer from June 1949 to July 1950. From August 1950 to June 1951 he attend- ed the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island. From July 1951 to August 1953 he served on the Staff of the Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic. He married the former Miss Catherine EAPTAI Ann Metz in 1942. The Shinners have three children -- two daughters, Patricia and Kathryn, and one son John Edward Jr. Born in Wichita, Kansas, in 1918, LCDR Zim- mermann received his commission in 1942, com - pleting Naval Reserve Midshipman School at North- western University. Ordered to the USS KNIGHT QDD-6635, he par- ticipated in landings in North Africa, Sicily and Salerno. As Gunnery Officer of the AULT QDD - 6981 in 1943-44, he received a letter of commen- dation from Commander Destroyer Force, U. S. Pacific Fleet, for meritorious conduct during anti-aircraft action against Japanese Kamikazi attacks . LCDR Zimmermann was released to inactive duty in 1946, and married the former Miss Donna Lee Hamm in Wichita, Kansas. Recalled to active duty at the onset of the Ko - rean War, he was assigned to Charleston Group, Atlantic Reserve Fleet, for the reactivation phase , and later, to the Staff of Commander Battleship Division TWO in USS NEW JERSEY QBB-623 . First the ROWE was called upon to escort two Japanese transports carrying Thailand troops . . . with the Thailand prime minister aboard . . . And second the ROWE took part in a search for a downed military aircraft that resulted in a rescue aircraft being towed into harbor by the ROWE . . . thought to be the only instance of a destroyer rescuing an aircraft by taking it in tow on the open seas . . . to the right and below are actual pictures of the rescued rescue plane and of a rescue boat picking up survivors . . . night prevented pictures being taken of the plane while in tow astern the ROWE . . . Following Korean operations we transited the Shimonoseki Straits to Kobe, Japan . . . i remember Japan, Joe ? , Sasebo Harbor J On our second coming to Japan after Korean operations we were fortunate enough to visit Kobe . . . one of the cultural centers of Japan . . . from Kobe we were able to travel to Nara . . .
