A STUDENT NURSE Between the security of childhood and the insecurity of womanhood we find a fascinating group called Student Nurses , They come in assorted weights, sizes, shapes, and states of sanity. They can be found any- where; in hospitals, on the telephone, in bed, in OB, scrubbing in OR, and always in debt. Patients love them, instructors tolerate them, and parents support them. A student nurse is at ease when not in class| omoniduty sbrave, when a fellow student is by her side, and the protector of the patient with her procedure book close at hand. She has the energy of an explod- ing bomb; the shyness of a violet, the brains of Heaven-only-knows- what, the stories of the Army nurse, and the sincerity and aspirations of Florence Nightingale; and when she wants something, there is usually a shortage of help. Some of her likes are: doctors, interns, male patients, and the opposite SO, She dislikes: bedpans, enemas, bed-baths, wearing overly starched uniforms, some head nurses, hospital food, and getting up in the morn- ing. No one else can cram into one uniform pocket: Bandage scissors, three safety pins, two rubber bands, two pens-one red, one blue--a roll of gauze, a small notebook, a comb, a lipstick, room keys, medicine cards, notecards, and a crushed pack of cigarettes. She spends money on: food, nylons, cigarettes, stamps, and phone calls home. A student nurse is a magical creature. You can lock her out of your heart. You can cross her off your mailing list but not off your mind. She is your long-away-from-home loved one, and your one-and-only good-for-nothing, bundle of worry. But all shattered dreams become significant when your student nurse walks down the aisle at graduation in her white uniform and looks at you through wide, teary eyes and says SLO NOS: UND) 2 IP
