pete Cap D. A. RENDLEMAN, JR., M. . Nineteen Hundred And Sixty Nine P. O. BOX 427 SALISBURY, N. C. 28144 HAPPINESS IS... I have come to see life, not as a chase of forever impossible per- sonal happiness, but as a field for endeavor toward the happiness of the whole human family. There is no other success. I know indeed of nothing more subtly satisfying and cheering than a knowledge of the real good will and appreciation of others. Such happiness does not come with money; nor does it flow from a fine physical state. It can- not be bought. But it is the keenest joys, citer all and the toiler's truest and best reward. --William Dean Howells. Presented by Rowan Memorial Hospital Student Government Association Salisbury, North Carolina Editor: Sandy Mesimer Co-Editor: Libby Younts Business Manager: Pattie Fritts Artist: Kim Newnam ROWAN PAC mie anES 5 dessin 0. DEDICATION With love and gratitude in our hearts for her loyalty, devotion and Sincere interest in the students and School of Nursing. We, the annual staff of 1969, dedicate this edition - of the WHITE CAP to Mrs. Phyllis Daugherty. But you see. . Round and round we go. It IT laughing at you? Dr. F. B. Everett, Treasurer; Ed- ward Taylor; C. H. Wentz Nancy Martin MISS WHITE CAP The Board of Trustees, Rowan Memorial Hospital are proud to present Miss White Cap 1969, Miss Nancy Martin. Nancy has demonstrated high academic achievement, initiative, understanding and loyalty as a student nurse. In her day by day activities she has prac- ticed the Nurses' Golden Rule: I will try to do unto others as I would that others would do unto those [ love. ‘hough this hononisedirectedito one in dividual, the entire student body reflects aeselocuompnricdes Nancy Martin Happiness To Student Nurses Has Many Different Meanings ee eee Knowing You're Not So Dumb... After Al Learning Challenging Skills And Techniques Completing The Years... Toward The Final Goal. A STUDENT NURSE Between the security of childhood and the insecurity of womanhood we find a fascinating group called Student Nurses , They come in assorted weights, sizes, shapes, and states of sanity. They can be found any- where; in hospitals, on the telephone, in bed, in OB, scrubbing in OR, and always in debt. Patients love them, instructors tolerate them, and parents support them. A student nurse is at ease when not in class| omoniduty sbrave, when a fellow student is by her side, and the protector of the patient with her procedure book close at hand. She has the energy of an explod- ing bomb; the shyness of a violet, the brains of Heaven-only-knows- what, the stories of the Army nurse, and the sincerity and aspirations of Florence Nightingale; and when she wants something, there is usually a shortage of help. Some of her likes are: doctors, interns, male patients, and the opposite SO, She dislikes: bedpans, enemas, bed-baths, wearing overly starched uniforms, some head nurses, hospital food, and getting up in the morn- ing. No one else can cram into one uniform pocket: Bandage scissors, three safety pins, two rubber bands, two pens-one red, one blue--a roll of gauze, a small notebook, a comb, a lipstick, room keys, medicine cards, notecards, and a crushed pack of cigarettes. She spends money on: food, nylons, cigarettes, stamps, and phone calls home. A student nurse is a magical creature. You can lock her out of your heart. You can cross her off your mailing list but not off your mind. She is your long-away-from-home loved one, and your one-and-only good-for-nothing, bundle of worry. But all shattered dreams become significant when your student nurse walks down the aisle at graduation in her white uniform and looks at you through wide, teary eyes and says SLO NOS: UND) 2 IP CLASSES SENIORS Here we are at last weary, underpaid and underloved seniors. CLASS HISTORY September 5, 1966 was the beginning of our long road toward our big goal--to become an R.N. Our first week of orientation included a singspiration, talent show and a picnic. Along with this came the serious business--learning what todoand what not to do. Next came caps, books, books, and more books. Picture making brought a new dilemma--finding old uniforms that fit. Classes brought closed study and trips to Cataw- ba. However, we didn't keep our noses in the books all the time. We sold candy, walked to the park and town, went Christmas caroling and attended Fall Festival where our representative was crowned queen. Those crazy summer days brought sun bathing and a summer dance. During the year we lost seven of our classmates, leaving only twelve of us to continue. It was a proud day in our lives when we received our Junior stripes. Now we were no longerthe, baby nurses . Shortly thereafter our number became eleven. The Fall Festival this year wa s sponsored by our class, again our representative won. At Halloween we trick or treated for UNICEF. At Christmas we spread cheer with carols and enjoyed a Big and Little Sister party. As March winds began so did our flight to Pennsylvania on March 4. This was met with feelings of anticipation and dread. Upon our return we had a farewell picnic for the Seniors. It's hard to believe that these years are over, years filled with many people and ex- periences we will never forget. Regardless of the outcome we will always remember our three years at RMH. AS we go our separate ways--to conquer new worlds. The Senior Class of 1969 bids you a relieved FAREWELL ! Historian Pauline Hatley 19 LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT I, Patsy Cline, leave to anyone who wants it, the ability to learn and take marvelous Dictibes Oat iie annuals I, Sherry Coble, leave my ability to go to bed at 9 o'clock and sleep through anything to anyone who likes to sleep. I, Tereas Harrison, being of cornfused mind, leave my ability to think of corny jokes to anyone who wishes to try. I, Polly Hatley, leave to Wanda Brittain, lots of good times at RMH and Pa. I, Kim Newnam, leave to everyone the thought, ‘Let the good times outweigh the bad --it's the only way to survive! I, Betty Swaringen, leave my old beat up nursing shoes to RMH Hall of Fame. 20 PROPHECY Hey! Sherry, let's play with the Ouija board to find out what is going to happen to everybody after graduation. OK, Betty, let's do talk to Ouija. Ouija, Ouija, Fire and Thunder, what do you see way out yonder in the future? Ouija started a slow continuous motion over the board. The first name to come up was PATSY CLINE. Ouija revealed Patsy's dream of travel and adventure has come true. She travels all over the world as an Army Recruiting Nurse: Now Ouija spelled JUDY HOLT. Judy and David have settled in Greensboro with their seven very tall kids. Judy is head nurse of Pediatrics in a local hospital. Next we see TERESA HARRISON a Health Nurse at an all men's college in Florida. We understand she is quite happy. RUELEEN HICKS divides her time between part time nursing and cooking for her min- ister husband and children. E@m@mveriicky holds the position of Chief of Recreation Nurse at. the V.A. Hospital in in Salisbury. PATTIE FRITTS works as plant nurse at Proctor Schwartz on he. days off from Rowan O.R. Having left the nursing profession, NANCY MARTIN models Tiffany uniforms in New iC ks Clvy.. SANDY MESIMER Roberson can be seen nursing her husband, Bobby, through his weekly guest appearances on Gomer Pyle USMC Show. Wounded surfers are cared for by KIM NEWNAM as she travels along the shores of Virginia Beach, Virginia. SHERRY COBLE is working for the Red Cross Headquarters in Washington, D.C. During her spare time, she maybe found racing her 396 SS Chevelle up and down Pennsylvania Avenue. BETTY SWARINGEN continues her endeavor to win a Yankee ov er to the Southern way as well as nursing at Torrance State Hospital, Pennsylvania. Ouija at last came to an exhausted halt from this past hour's work. Well, I wonder if Ouija will be correct in his predictions. I don't know, Betty, oniy time will tell. PROPHETS Betty Swaringen Sherry Coble 21 JUNIORS HAPPINESS IS entering your second year to move upstairs with roommates, books and extra necessities collected over the year.
