Coss History September 5, 1961, was an exciting and frightening day for most of us. That was the day we entered Rowan Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. After a week of picnics and orientation we were ready to face what lay ahead of us which has turned out to be three years of fun, hard work, many learning experiences, and meeting new acquaintances every day. One of the first events we particularly recall was our Fall Festival which was held in our Recreation Hall. Our Freshman candidate was chosen Fall Festival Queen for that year. Next was the Christmas Dance and party our doctors sponsored at the Country Club. Our candidate for Christmas Queen that year represented our class very well. We then settled down to more hard work until February rolled around and we had our Valentine Dance and party at the Y.M.C.A. We have many pleasant and unpleasant memories of our Freshman year but the one that stands out the most was the night we received our Junior Bands. Our Junior year started out to be fun, particularly playing devilish tricks on the new freshman class, plus taking on new subjects and getting into the swing of nursing by being able to accept bigger responsibilities. Along with this we were sponsoring our Fall Festival. We got busy on this and had a successful carnival type Fall Festival this year. We were busy with our project but we found time to collect penny votes for our Queen candidate. Then came our Christmas Dance which was held at the Y.M.C.A. Our candidate for Queen represented us very well and was chosen Christmas Queen for the year 1962. Time was passing quickly for us and soon our Valentine Dance was upon us, which we had at the Y.M.C.A. For almost two years our class had never been separated but the time was drawing near when Psychiatric Affiliation would separate us. So on March 10, 1963, four of our classmates left for Pennsylvania, then finally on September 8, the last seven of our class left on affiliation. Our class was the first in recent years to take Pediatrics at Rowan Memorial Hospital, so we were lucky in that we only had to affiliate for Psychiatry. Besides graduation of course, the exciting event of our three years of school was the night we received our SENIOR BANDS. Unfortunately four of our classmates could not be present because of affiliation but we mailed their bands to them. Because of affiliation this year all of us could not be present for our Fall Festival. However, we were well represented there, especially, with our candidate for Queen. Again this year our Christmas Dance was held at the Country Club which was sponsored by our doctors. Our class was well represented by our candidate for Queen. Our last social event for the year was our Valentine's party which was an informal get-together in the Rec- reation Room. Now that our three years are reaching a finale we consider August 20, 1964, as the most important day in our history.'' Why? Graduation! ! Rita Settlemyre and Mavis Taylor Historians 22
