Poor indeed is the person whose mind in not enriched by some phrase of lasting truth and beauty which serves to restore his soul We, the STUDENT BODY, share pride and pleasure in presenting our yearbook. Through future years we will capture and live again in memory of the experiences we have shared at ROWAN MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. The symphony of life moves forward with melodic progression; we are left to share fleeting glimpses and treasured recollections. of MAEAAORIES THAT ARE MADE OF... To Dr. Daniel Kirk, one who possessed the wisdom of understanding, the virtue of patience and power of kindness in sharing of his time and abilities with us, we, the student body, with deepest appreciation and gratitude do hereby dedicate this 1964 WHITE CAP. w ew, It's only a piece of white muslin Perched on the top of my head, Its value to some may mean nothing, To me it's a symbol instead. A symbol of hope, cheer, and comfort To those who are suffering and ill. To me it gives strength unbelieving My work to perform with a will! Sometimes I am discouraged, and disheartened; My tasks seem so hopeless to me. My cap seems to speak of a promise Of things I so want to be! No jewels adorn its wide brim So simple and plain is its line -- Treat it with reverence and honor, For there's only one cap of its kind! That was the day we entered Rowan Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. After a week of picnics and orientation we were ready to face what lay ahead of us which has turned out to be three years of fun, hard work, many learning experiences, and meeting new acquaintances every day. One of the first events we particularly recall was our Fall Festival which was held in our Recreation Hall. Our Freshman candidate was chosen Fall Festival Queen for that year. Next was the Christmas Dance and party our doctors sponsored at the Country Club. Our candidate for Christmas Queen that year represented our class very well. We then settled down to more hard work until February rolled around and we had our Valentine Dance and party at the Y.M.C.A. We have many pleasant and unpleasant memories of our Freshman year but the one that stands out the most was the night we received our Junior Bands. Our Junior year started out to be fun, particularly playing devilish tricks on the new freshman class, plus taking on new subjects and getting into the swing of nursing by being able to accept bigger responsibilities. Along with this we were sponsoring our Fall Festival. We got busy on this and had a successful carnival type Fall Festival this year. We were busy with our project but we found time to collect penny votes for our Queen candidate. Then came our Christmas Dance which was held at the Y.M.C.A. Our candidate for Queen represented us very well and was chosen Christmas Queen for the year 1962. Time was passing quickly for us and soon our Valentine Dance was upon us, which we had at the Y.M.C.A. For almost two years our class had never been separated but the time was drawing near when Psychiatric Affiliation would separate us. So on March 10, 1963, four of our classmates left for Pennsylvania, then finally on September 8, the last seven of our class left on affiliation. Our class was the first in recent years to take Pediatrics at Rowan Memorial Hospital, so we were lucky in that we only had to affiliate for Psychiatry. Besides graduation of course, the exciting event of our three years of school was the night we received our SENIOR BANDS. Unfortunately four of our classmates could not be present because of affiliation but we mailed their bands to them. Because of affiliation this year all of us could not be present for our Fall Festival. However, we were well represented there, especially, with our candidate for Queen. Again this year our Christmas Dance was held at the Country Club which was sponsored by our doctors. Our class was well represented by our candidate for Queen. Our last social event for the year was our Valentine's party which was an informal get-together in the Rec- reation Room. Now that our three years are reaching a finale we consider August 20, 1964, as the most important day in our history.'' Why? Graduation! ! Rita Settlemyre and Mavis Taylor Historians 22 Class Puphary Time: 2:00 a.m. Place: Coffee House in Greenwich Village, N.Y. We find Janet Ramsaur, now married to a folk singer and working in a private hospital for narcotic addicts. With her we find Libby Anne DeVier who has just returned from Disneyland where she did the animation for a medical cartoon called ''The Kidney Stones. Both are 1964 graduates of Rowan Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. At the present they can be overheard catching up on the latest gossip on their classmates. The inseparable Mavis and Rita are now living in a duplex apartment. Mavis is a school nurse while Rita and her husband teach in a school for lab technicians. Eleanor Davis not only nurs es people, she has a great many animal patients thanks to a certain game warden. It seems Ellen Severs is accounting for many instruments as she is part of an open heart surgical team. Speaking of surgery, Janet Hutchins is now Operating Room Supervisor at Rowan Memorial Hospital. Also, we find, acting as a supervisor Pat Latham who is director of Nurses at the Hill. Our other Pat, Deal, that is, went to Florida with Sue Wise. When last heard of, they were doing little nursing, but lots of surfing. The international traveler is Marina Harris who is a clinical instructor at a school of nursing in Greece. Donna Kluttz is now in Pennsylvania. She has that secret job we always thought she'd get but that we can't mention at this time. Judy Hancock is in charge of the new intensive care unit at Rowan Memorial Hospital. There should never be a dull moment with Cannon around. It is now 4:00 a.m., Janet and Libby are leaving the coffee house. They can be heard making plans to meet again tonight. They plan to go to a nightclub where their most talented classmate Diana Lassiter is appearing. Diana sings in a trio with Doctors Casey and Kildare called ''The Medics Three! Class Prophetess, Janet Ramsaur Libby DeVier 23 Ne Last Wil) and Testament Eleanor Davis, leave my imagination to change my room around every week to my little sister, Jane Lopp, in hopes that her back is strong and her classmates have ear plugs. Pat Deal, leave my ability to fix thin pizzas to Brenda Love! Libby Anne DeVier, leave my so called resemblance to Gail Lucas to anyone who can collect as many comments as I. Judy Hancock, being of feeble mind and weak body, do now leave my clinical evaluations, to anyone, just, anyone who has Mood Swings. Marina Harris leave to Gail Harris, my ability to get two anatomical parts of the body confused. Barbara Johnson Holshouser, being of sound mind and weak body do leave to anyone who wants it my empty room, 204, and hope they have the good fortune of getting a husband as I did. Janet Hutchins, will leave and take everything with me, in hopes that life hereafter will be more rewarding. Donna Kluttz, being of sound mind and strong body leave my experiences at Torrance to Cookie Schmidt, and Carol Cole in hopes they will enjoy them half as much as I. Diana Lassiter, leave my love for parties , good times, my campusments, my middle name (Trouble), and my ability to be in the wrong place at the right time, to Martha Rich. Pat Latham, leave my determination to finish nursing school to Betty Smith, in hopes that it doesn't take her as long as it has taken me. Janet Ramsaur, being of sound mind and slim body leave my reducing pills to the faculty. Rita Settlemyre, leave to anyone who is interested, my INTEREST in laboratories and hope that they accomplish as much as I did. Ellen Severs, leave all my good luck and best wishes to the Class of 1966. Mavis Taylor, leave BOTH laundry room sinks on the second floor to Margaret Morgan with hopes that she will find them BOTH as useful as I did. Sue Wise, leave my love for ''Student Nursing Days to all the freshmen in hopes that they will enjoy it and have as much fun as [ have. We, the graduates of Rowan Memorial Hospital School of Nursing as of August 20, 1964 wish for our last wills to be cherished by those we have known for the past three years. As we set our sails and drift to yonder rise, we leave these things to you. 1. To our clas s advisor, Miss Rachel Suggs, as we set our sails of departure we leave with many fond memories of you! 2. To our Doctors we wish to express our sincere appreciation for the understanding and guidance you have given us in the past three years. 3. To our faculty, headnurses, supervisors, and directors we leave our deepest appreciation for without each of you our goal would have been far out of reach. 4. To Mrs. Kellum, Mrs. Mahaley, and Mrs. Page, our mothers away from home, we leave saying we love you. 26 5. To our underclassmen we leave our ability to find something wrong with everything. 6. To our Families and Friends whose love and understanding has brought us ashore when we were on the verge of sinking, we graduate with the hopes of fulfilling your high expectations.
