At the beginning of the first act we felt lowly in the presence of the Juniors and Seniors, but as we began to burn the midnight oil in our course of study, it wasn't too long before we began to feel at home in that group known as the Rowan Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. The leading parts in this drama were portrayed by Ruby Hodgin, Faye Donaldson, Barbara Floyd, and Ellen Lowman. The highlights of our Freshman year were the freshman sponsored Santa Swing” and being invited to the Junior-Senior Banquet. The summer months came and with them we started our spe- cial service clinical assignments. Mrs. Martha Powell was our advisor. With great sorrow nine of our classmates left us for other chosen fields; one transfer student joined our class. Under the guidance of the instructors, doctors, and graduate nurse staff we received the basic knowledge necessary to start us on the way to complete success- fully the remaining two acts of this performance, As curtain call came for the second act we had become members of the royal group known as Juniors and received our junior band which was proudly worn on our cap. Time marched on and we felt more at home as we foretook the studying of Medical-Surgical Specialities, The highlights of our Junior year were the Halloween Carnival and the Junior-Senior Banquet. With March came affiliations. Our advisor this year was Mrs, Geneva Williams and starring in the leading roles were Ruby Hod- gin, Faye Donaldson, Barbara Floyd, and Ellen Lowman. Two transfer students joined the class during our junior year, The third and final act of our production starred Faye Donaldson, Barbara Floyd, Carolyn Burke, and Sadie Yost with Miss Rachel Suggs as our advisor. The highlights of this year were receiving our beautiful senior band, which we wear so proudly on our cap and the production of the White Cap. With the Senior year came advanced work, both in theory and practice which proved a challenge. The ending of the third act of our play brings a feeling of mixed emotions. There is pleasure with the feeling of accomplishment as we don the white uniform of the graduate nurse, There is sorrow at the thought of leaving those many friends we have made through these three wonderful years at the Rowan Memorial Hospital. This edition, better known as the Class of 1961 takes its rightful place in the history of Rowan Memorial Hospital School of Nursing with just pride, During the ensuing years, should there be any readers of this recorded history, be it known that this cast leaves this production to you, knowing that you too will do your utmost to make yours a high mark in the future of our beloved school--Rowan Memorial Hos- pital School of Nursing of Salisbury, North Carolina. Carolyn Burke and Barbara Floyd Historians ‘a) 7: MY GAP It's only a piece of white muslin Perched on the top of my head, Its value to some may mean nothing, To me it's a symbol instead. A symbol of hope, cheer, and comfort To those who are suffering and ill. To me it gives strength unbelieving My work to perform with a will! Sometimes I am discouraged, and disheartened; My tasks seem so hopeless to me. My cap seems to speak of a promise Of things I so want to be! No jewels adorn its wide brim So simple and plain is its line-- Treat it with reverence and honor, For there's only one cap of its kind! LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the Class of 1961, being of sound mind and realizing the eminence of our de- parture from Rowan Memorial Hospital, do hereby publish this our last will and testa- ment. ARTICLE I To the School of Nursing, we leave our appreciation for making it possible for us to reach our goal--as graduate nurses, ARTIGLEAL To the faculty, we leave our gratitude for their guidance and patience during our course of study. ARTICLE III To the doctors and nurses, for their services too numerous to mention, we leave our greatest admiration and respect. ARTICLE IV To the Housemothers, who so carefully watched over us, we leave our sincere thanks, ARGU Gsm To our class advisor, Miss Suggs, we leave our deepest appreciation for all the many difficulties through which she has guided us. I, Carolyn Burke, do hereby will and bequeath mine and Barb's humble abode which always has the appearance of having been lived in and the numerous collection of stuffed pets, to whoever enjoys comfort more than beauty. I, Faye Donaldson, do bequeath my ability to leave care studies until the last minute to anyone who dares, I, Norma Duncan, leave to any deserving Junior my ragged and worn out uniforms with no guarantee as to how long they will last, hoping they will have a nice coming out party. 24 I, Barbara Floyd, leave to my “little sister, Peggy Parker, my love for nursing and the misfortune of having TOO MANY sick days, I, Ellen Lowman, leave to anyone the ability to graduate from Rowan and still have MONEY.© I, Amy Lyerly, leave my room next to the bathroom, to Mary Ann Hall with hopes that she can stand the noise. FLOWER White Carnation COLORS Blue and White 25 CEASS PROPHECY For I dipped into the future far as human eye could see, and saw there... --Tennyson. The Class of 1961 as it slowly begins to drift into the Reception Room of the new Rowan Memorial Hospital School of Nursing for the long awaited twenty year reunion. First to arrive is the dignified Colonel Faye Donaldson of the United States Army Nurse Corps. She has just returned from Washington, D. C., where she was appointed Director of Nursing Service at the Walter Reed Army Hospital. Mrs. Norma Duncan, arriving from Altapass, North Carolina, where she is founder and director of the General Hospital, is accompanied by her husband and six children. Hm! The years have certainly been productive. Mrs, Don Allred, the former Carolyn Burke, tells us that she is now school nurse for Central High School near Lexington, North Carolina. However, I've heard that she is known as Teacher's Pet instead of Mrs. Allred, R.N. Mrs, Barbara Floyd Foust, R.N. and M.o.m. arrives in style from her home in Florida in her swept wing Dodge, This is the first time she and her family have visited Salisbury since her graduation. Mrs. Margaret Bell McLaurin arrived in Salisbury with police escort. She says she works at the Children's Hospital in Charlotte when she isn't busy keeping house for the chief of police. Mrs. Kenneth Money is really living up to her name. She is an industrial nurse for the Dow Chemical Corporation where her husband is employed as a chemist. Mrs. Money, you remember, is the former Miss Ellen Lowman. Miss Amy Lyerly arrived yesterday by private plane from New York where she is a visiting nurse, In her spare time, she designs nurses uniforms--one of which she is modeling for us this afternoon. We weren't sure Miss Sadie Yost, O.B. Supervisor here at Rowan Memorial Hospital, was going to be able to make it to the reunion today. It seems as if they have been rushed with a record number of deliveries lately. Believe it or not, the former Miss Judy Savage is happily married and seems content keeping house for her favorite Dulany Sales Representative. Adapted from Nurse Please by Jean McConnell: Published by Lippincott Co, Between the innocence of an entrance exam and an R.N. comes a lovable creature called a Student Nurse, They come in assorted sizes, heights, and shapes but they have the same creed: To enjoy every second of every hour of every day off duty, and protest with griping, (their only weapon), when their forty hour week is over, and their supervisors are in the snack bar. Student Nurses are found everywhere: underneath, jumping from, swimming to and running through. Patients love them, R,N.'s boss them, orderlies ignore them, Doctors tolerate them, and Heaven pro- tects them. A Student Nurse is truth with blood on her uniform, beauty with gloves on her hands, wisdom with penicillin in her hair, and the future with a new born baby in her hands. To Doctors a Student Nurse is an inconsiderate, questioning, and intruding bundle of noise, When you want her to make a good impression, she becomes a giggling creature, bent on wasting as much time as possible, and sleeping through class, A student has the appetite of a horse, the digestion of a disposal unit, the energy of a soap suds enema, the lungs of a switchboard operator, the imagination of a Vanderbilt Graduate, the enthusiasm of central supply, the sharpness of a scalpel, and when she gives pills, she has five thumbs on each hand. She likes food, vacation, Christmas, money from home, love stories, water in its natural habitus, Doctors, working elevators, and days off. She is not much for: Books without pictures, operating room dresses, hair nets, study hours, metric systems, and case studies, not to mention ward classes, Nobody is so late to bed and so early to rise, nobody gets so much out of medical conferences, and lectures. No one can cram into one day, five enemas, twelve complete bed baths, five subjects, three trips to a pharmacy, two trips to the nursing office, fifty aspirins, set up a uniform, polish her shoes, stay out till twelve o'clock and still get along with her classmates. A student Nurse is a magical creature--You can campus her, but you can't keep her out of trouble. You can put her on study hours, but you can't make her study. She is your aide, your maid, your porter, and your friend. She is a freckled face, pint size, fun loving bundle of noise, but when she gets off duty with her tired feet, and her aching back she has a funny way of dropping into bed and saying “good night, but not without those famous last words, check on me in the A.M. 34 Ot fivities B.
