Class Prophecy PLACE: Court Room of Salisbury Police Station TIME: 3:30 P.M. YEAR: 1979 The jury had been out four hours—the crowd in the court room was tense. Being tried, was the ten members of the Graduating Class of 1959 from the Rowan Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. As we waited for the jury to return, I looked around at all the girls—everyone had changed somewhat in the past twenty years but yet, just then, we all seemed as close as we were back in 1959. GWYN CULP who is now the President of the N.L.N., had looked very proud and digni- fied as she testified that she was Dr. Smith’s office nurse and loving every minute of it. As Director of Nursing Service at Rowan Memorial Hospital where we all had graduated, I, GAIL KEY, was especially proud to state some of the lastest nursing trends and how much patient care had been improved since 1959. SARAH LEWIS, now married to a local railroad-man, is the Industrial Nurse for Southern Railroad Co. She recently invented a cure for the common cold. She calls her preparation “WESCOLYSN.” It is a combination of Wescodyne and Lysol. JANE MASON, also married with two lovely grandchildren, is now head nurse on a Mater- nity Ward at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md. She has done some outstanding work in this field. Some of her articles are in the current issue of the A. J. N. JOYCE PAYNE, married to Multi-millionaire Buddy Evans, is the local Health Director there in New York where they and their two sets of twins are making their home. Joyce needs this type job where she can work three days a week and still have time to keep the “minutes of the last meeting” correct—since she is also the Secretary of The American Red Cross. BETTY SHAVER also married to, we all know who, was flown in from Honolulu for the trial. Eugene is making the service as a career and is stationed there. Shaver is the delegate member from the U. S. Govt. to Honolulu. Her job there calls for an alert nurse. We cannot dis- close the nature of her duties there. BETTY SMITH, now Mrs. J. Brewer, is the Head Nurse on the Pediatric Unit at U. N. C. They have four children and a beautiful home on the campus. Jim is the Administrator of the Hos- pital there. MARY ANNE STRIDER who is married to a Pennsylvania guy, is the Director of Nursing Service at Torrance State Hospital. She is famous, world wide, for doing advanced work in the field of Psychiatry and Human Relations. PATSY TYSON who arrived shortly before the trial began, testified that she was now the Director of the School for Midwifery in Kentucky. She is nationally known for her outstanding work in Obstetrics. In 1000 home deliveries she had only one infection. LYNNE WILES who worked so hard, as 1 remember, on our yearbook—still looks tired! This could be attributed to the fact that she is now the Treasurer of the State Nurses’ Associa- tion. She is also in charge of the Emergency Room at a large hospital in Tampa, Florida. Just as I was thinking over our student days together—the jury filed in. The judge said, “Have you reached a verdict?” The spokesman for the jury happened to be an old, old friend of the class of ‘59—Mrs. Norma McCanless. She said, “In view of the facts presented before the court we the jury find that all members of Graduated Class of 1959 are actively working and serving mankind, therefore, we the jury find the Class of 1959 NOT GUILTY of “Hiding their lights under a Bushel.” Prophet—Gail Key

Class History On September 4, 1956, nineteen freshmen walked through the doors of the nurses residence of Rowan Memorial Hospital, little knowing what lay ahead. In the next nine months, we slaved through numerous courses (sixteen to be exact), and had our first experiences in caring for patients. We will never forget how proud we were when we put on our striped uniforms and white caps! We chose Mrs. Millie Avery as our freshman class sponsor. During our first year, Anne Dean, Peggy MacMillin, Nancy Glover, Anne Harding, Anna Harrelson, and June Powlas left us. When June finally came, we laid aside our books, and began working eight hours a day in special services, and on medical and surgical floors. During the summer, we each welcomed two weeks of vacation. In the fall of 1957, we realized we had taken our first big step as we became juniors and put on our black bands. We began classes in Obstetrics and advanced medical and surgical nursing. Mrs. Grace Lee, Assistant Director of Education, became our Junior Class advisor. In December 1957, we began our affiliations, our Pediatric experience in Asheville, North Carolina, and our Psychiatric schooling in Torrance, Pa. This year we lost Virginia Beovich, Nell Whitaker, Anne Gettys and Jennie Hufford. On September 4, 1958, our black bands and proud faces told us and the world that we were at last SENIORS. We chose Miss Larice Roseman as our Senior Class advisor, and Miss Lula Mallard as our annual sponsor. Of course, space would not permit an account of all the laughs, good times, and interesting experiences we have had, but they will live on in our memories always.
