Class History Lugging heavy suitcases and with full hearts, eleven girls arrived at Rowan Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Salisbury on August the twenty-ninth, nineteen-hundred and fifty-five. We launched on a rigid schedule of studies starting with Anatomy, Chemistry, Psychology, Micro- biology, Professional Adjustments, Drugs and Solutions, and the pathfinder for preclinicals--Nursing Arts. In November, we lost one of our members, Shirley Ann Barbee. Soon to follow was Candace Owens who left in February of 1956. Nevertheless, we gained a member, Colleen Smith, that same month. In April, Diane Johnston left and Bobbie Sue Ennis left in May. June the fifth, nineteen-hundred and fifty-six, the day we had been waiting for--CAPPING. It was a glorious feeling to wear our dignity which we had anticipated for nine months. June found us busy in the Operating Room, Diet Kitchen, and on various floors. What summer months! No classes. In August we became proud Juniors and donneda black corner stripe on our caps. Classes started again and we became more aware of the many things we didn't know. Betty Goodman became a member of our class in September. In November, Dolores Honeycutt gave up nursing for matrimony. Jean Cummings resigned in June, 1957. December--off on affiliation! The first affiliation was at Children's Hospital, Washington, D.C. Those three that left were sad at leaving Rowan but looking forward to a new experience. March of 1957 found the first girls from our class at Torrence, Pennsylvania studying the ways and means of the mind. June of 1957, three of our girls made history by being the first girls from our school to affiliate at Missions Memorial Hospital in Asheville. Betty Sellers resigned in December. With pleasure, we placed a long black band on our caps in August to become Seniors. We became more aware of our responsibility as professional nurses. We elected Mrs. Grace Lee as our class sponsor and Mrs. Faye Paul as our annual advisor. From this, our past, we draw a promise for the future.
