To us, this was a shining land where hearts were ever young and magical. To it the fortunate may return, though the years may be sometimes long and weary. For it is held in all the changeless depths of memory. The stairway of the future is now before us, and we now take our stand upon that stairway, with a lamp of light and hope, and God guiding each step of the way. We launched on a rigid schedule of studies starting with Anatomy, Chemistry, Psychology, Micro- biology, Professional Adjustments, Drugs and Solutions, and the pathfinder for preclinicals--Nursing Arts. In November, we lost one of our members, Shirley Ann Barbee. Soon to follow was Candace Owens who left in February of 1956. Nevertheless, we gained a member, Colleen Smith, that same month. In April, Diane Johnston left and Bobbie Sue Ennis left in May. June the fifth, nineteen-hundred and fifty-six, the day we had been waiting for--CAPPING. It was a glorious feeling to wear our dignity which we had anticipated for nine months. June found us busy in the Operating Room, Diet Kitchen, and on various floors. What summer months! No classes. In August we became proud Juniors and donneda black corner stripe on our caps. Classes started again and we became more aware of the many things we didn't know. Betty Goodman became a member of our class in September. In November, Dolores Honeycutt gave up nursing for matrimony. Jean Cummings resigned in June, 1957. December--off on affiliation! The first affiliation was at Children's Hospital, Washington, D.C. Those three that left were sad at leaving Rowan but looking forward to a new experience. March of 1957 found the first girls from our class at Torrence, Pennsylvania studying the ways and means of the mind. June of 1957, three of our girls made history by being the first girls from our school to affiliate at Missions Memorial Hospital in Asheville. Betty Sellers resigned in December. With pleasure, we placed a long black band on our caps in August to become Seniors. We became more aware of our responsibility as professional nurses. We elected Mrs. Grace Lee as our class sponsor and Mrs. Faye Paul as our annual advisor. From this, our past, we draw a promise for the future. Class Prophecy This is the -- city? Torrence, Pennsylvania. | work here. I'm the Director of Nursing Service. | was going through my morning mail when | noticed the postmark on one of the letters. It was from Salisbury, North Carolina, the genesis of my nursing education. It was frommy old cohort , Mrs. Colleen Loflin Smith, who was now Director of Nurses at dear old R.M.H., wife of the President of the Tube Rose Snuff Company, there in Salisbury. Mrs. Smith, the only member of my graduating class, still in Salisbury, had heard from all the rest of the girls, and wanted to tell me of their plans for a class reunion. After ten years we were finally going to get together again! As | sat there, reminiscing, | thought of the progress each of us had made: BETTY GOODMAN is now in Texas. She is in charge of the First Aid Station there at the Alamo. Her duties consist of many things; mainly teaching the Indians the various uses of the local herbs and roots. In exchange, they are teaching her how to make her own Tequilla! Good salary. MARION ITCHY FEET GRANT, has traveled to the far corners of the earth. She is on the corner of FuFu and MooChung streets in Hong Kong, China. She is there as a delegate member of the W.H.O. to inspect WHAT! BETTY KELLER MOFFITT, is with her husband and six little Moffits in Frankfurt, Germany. Gene is an interpreter there for the Government. Atlast Keller has realized her life's ambition. She isn't working, due to a law that bars American nurses from practicing. This suits her fine because now she can sleep every day until 12:00 noon, while the maid keeps the children. VANONDA CRISCO'S vast store of useless knowledge finally paid off. She won 64 million dollars on a TV show, and is now cruising the Mediterranean with her husband and small son. NANCY THOMPSON, the honorary member of our class, was chosen by The American Society of X-Ray Technician's to go to Mars. She was the first technician to make a successful trip. She brought back a beautiful film of The Little Blue Man that even you know who had to approve of ! | was delighted to accept the invitation to the reunion. The date was perfect. My husband was due his annual leave from the hospital, and our three children were home from school . VERLYN ADKINS, Prophet Last Will and Cestament We, the Senior Class of Rowan Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, being of questionable states of mind and fairly sound body, foreseeing the day when we will relinquish our titles as Seniors, do deem it advisable and practical to write our last will and testament. Article 1: | To Rowan Memorial Hospital, we leave our sincere thanks for our professional training. Article Il: | To our doctors, for their patience and understanding, we |eave our admiration and respect. Article Ill: To our nurses, for their guidance, we leave our appreciation. Article IV: To our faculty, we just leave, knowing that pleases them most. Article V: To the various persons we leave the following: 1. 1, VERLYN ADKINS, leave my ability to oversleep and still get to work on time to Sarah Lewis and Ann Gettys hoping they will enjoy those extra winks as much as | did. 2. 1, VANONDA CRISCO, do hereby leave my unfinished Student Council work to those brave souls, Gwyn Culp, Gail Key, and Jane Masonand hope that next year they can find some undiscovered list of students to serve on committees. 3. 1, BETTY GOODMAN, leave my love for Torrence to Lynn Wiles and Mary Ann Strider who are the first members of their class to be pronounced mentally ill and have to go there. 4. |, MARION GRANT, do will and bequeath Room 113, next to the telephone, under the kitchen, near the loud speaker, and near the fire alarm, to Jennie Hufford hoping she will find it as peaceful as | have. 5. |, BETTY JEAN KELLER, do leave my apartment in the nurses home living room to Betty Smith and Joyce Payne who have the prospects of needing such. 6. |, COLLEEN SMITH, leave to Betty Lou Shaver and Pat Tyson my ragged uniforms with no quarantee as to how long they will last. Article VI: We, the Senior Class of 1958, leave our ability to graduate to those who do so. We hereby declare this document, made on the fourteenth of March, nineteen hundred and fifty-eight, to be legal in every respect.
