lal S HOV On August 23, 1954, twenty “green’’ students entered Rowan Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. After weeks of orientation, and welcoming parties, we began our studies in Per- sonal Hygiene, Professional Adjustments, Drugs and Solutions, and many other foreign subjects. Next in our process of education, came Professor Hughes, Dr. Morman, and Pro- fessor Newell, from Catawba College, to teach us Chemistry, Anatomy, and Micro- biology. By the end of December, we were quite familiar with these subjects, and were looking forward to Christmas vacation. At the end of this time, several girls had left us, including Nancy Carpenter, Willie Hedrick, Shirley Bledsoe, and Barbara Turner. A few months later, Colleen Smith, Shirley Tucker, and Mary Lee Wilson decided to choose matrimony as a career instead of nursing. Alter many adjustments to our new enviroment, we elected Mrs. Ann Moore as our class sponsor, and thus began to make plans for the year. This year, we spent much time in studying, and with the help of Miss Mary Kurchinsky, Director of Nurses, and Miss Orpha Ann Burgess, Director of Nursing Education, we approached our first stepping stone toward becoming professional people—our capping exercise. On May 2, 1955, at the First Methodist Church Chapel, eleven of us proudly received our white caps, in the presence of our families and friends. After becoming accepted members of the school, we began our special services with some of us going to Diet Kitchen, Operating Room, and to Medical and Surgical Units. Here we learned to put into practice the knowledge we had attained in the classroom. Next came our Junior year with Mrs. Sarah Washeim, Director of Nurses, and Miss Josephine Rappaport, Director of Education. This year, we elected Mrs. Glenn Padgett as our class sponsor, and under her leadership, we had a very successful year of accomplishments. First came the Hallowe’en Carnival, with the proceeds making possible a very enjoyable Junior-Senior Prom. Next came a Valentine Dance at the Dogwood Lodge, a very gala event, enjoyed by all. In April, 1956, we began our affiliations, at Children’s Hospital, in Washington, D. C., and Torrence, Pennsylvania, where we gained more valuable knowledge in Pediatrics, and Psychiatry. During our Junior year we lost Eleanor Somers, but we also added two new members to our class, Mrs. Faye Paul and Mrs. Ann Wright. In September, 1957, we received our black bands, thus becoming Seniors, a posi- tion of which we were justly proud. This year we were very happy to have Lois Smith join our class, and sorry that we had to lose Patsy Lee Merriott. This year we also have beautiful memories of a wonderful Christmas and Valen- tine dances at the new recreation center, sponsored by the Freshman Class. With the help of Mrs. Glenn Padgett, our annual sponsor, and Mrs. Grace Lee, our new Educational Director, we were able to publish another edition of the ‘White Cap”. In spite of all the hard work that was put into it, we felt that having a copy of memories at Rowan was worth it.
