We love her in=spitesor cilia mules: During these past three years,.she has offered us much. Int her we now putall ourirust: Here's to the doctors who have tried so hard To teach us theory and practice on the wards. Even when we called them at three in the morning, They gave us orders without any groaning. Here's to the nurses and all the patience they have shown. A finer nursing staft, we've never known. Even when we failed in some phase of duty, They came to our aid with instructions, not fury. Here's to the patients who have supported us so well. We hope our nursing care for them will never fail. After weeks of orientation, and welcoming parties, we began our studies in Per- sonal Hygiene, Professional Adjustments, Drugs and Solutions, and many other foreign subjects. Next in our process of education, came Professor Hughes, Dr. Morman, and Pro- fessor Newell, from Catawba College, to teach us Chemistry, Anatomy, and Micro- biology. By the end of December, we were quite familiar with these subjects, and were looking forward to Christmas vacation. At the end of this time, several girls had left us, including Nancy Carpenter, Willie Hedrick, Shirley Bledsoe, and Barbara Turner. A few months later, Colleen Smith, Shirley Tucker, and Mary Lee Wilson decided to choose matrimony as a career instead of nursing. Alter many adjustments to our new enviroment, we elected Mrs. Ann Moore as our class sponsor, and thus began to make plans for the year. This year, we spent much time in studying, and with the help of Miss Mary Kurchinsky, Director of Nurses, and Miss Orpha Ann Burgess, Director of Nursing Education, we approached our first stepping stone toward becoming professional people—our capping exercise. On May 2, 1955, at the First Methodist Church Chapel, eleven of us proudly received our white caps, in the presence of our families and friends. After becoming accepted members of the school, we began our special services with some of us going to Diet Kitchen, Operating Room, and to Medical and Surgical Units. Here we learned to put into practice the knowledge we had attained in the classroom. Next came our Junior year with Mrs. Sarah Washeim, Director of Nurses, and Miss Josephine Rappaport, Director of Education. This year, we elected Mrs. Glenn Padgett as our class sponsor, and under her leadership, we had a very successful year of accomplishments. First came the Hallowe’en Carnival, with the proceeds making possible a very enjoyable Junior-Senior Prom. Next came a Valentine Dance at the Dogwood Lodge, a very gala event, enjoyed by all. In April, 1956, we began our affiliations, at Children’s Hospital, in Washington, D. C., and Torrence, Pennsylvania, where we gained more valuable knowledge in Pediatrics, and Psychiatry. During our Junior year we lost Eleanor Somers, but we also added two new members to our class, Mrs. Faye Paul and Mrs. Ann Wright. In September, 1957, we received our black bands, thus becoming Seniors, a posi- tion of which we were justly proud. This year we were very happy to have Lois Smith join our class, and sorry that we had to lose Patsy Lee Merriott. This year we also have beautiful memories of a wonderful Christmas and Valen- tine dances at the new recreation center, sponsored by the Freshman Class. With the help of Mrs. Glenn Padgett, our annual sponsor, and Mrs. Grace Lee, our new Educational Director, we were able to publish another edition of the ‘White Cap”. In spite of all the hard work that was put into it, we felt that having a copy of memories at Rowan was worth it. BE @ Pr Gay Greetings Everyone! This is the voice from Mars—’’squeeks”’! I just.got back from a place ealled Earth today and oh! I sure do have some news! Lanky and Powers are still fussing! Only this time over who has the best looking Cadillacs! It seems like they both married multi-millionaires and live next door to each other. Powers really has to watch her diet or else she gains ten pounds on a piece of candy. Lanky eats everything she can get her hands on and never gains an ounce—she still has that cute figure! Wow! You should see Sonja and Jack's monsters! They live in Pennsylvania and those monsters play basketball against each other because everyone else is afraid to play with them. Rochel and Lowell have a beautiful mansion in Lexington. They seem to be having trouble deciding which Nursing School or Medical School to send their twelve children to. It must be nice to keep the medical profession in the family. I saw Lois Smith at the Mayo Clinic as Director of Nursing and boy! She sure has a crip of a job! And seems to be enjoy- iaerits. | |)! Faye Paul is-working on First West at Rowan Memorial Hos- pital. As Head Nurse she has a job on her hands—incidentally, “Granny” is still in Room 108. Ann and Joe Wright finally got together! It seems that Joe was sent overseas so Ann decided to join the Marines so she could be with him. Well, just about the time he was sailing back to the States—she had to be overseas—but now after ten years they are finally together. You know Pat “George” still doesn't know whether she mar- ried a Pediatrician or an Obstetrician. She wanted Wayne to be an Obstetrician and Wayne says—Pediatrician. Well, to keep peace Wayne is both! It's a lucky thing, with their two dozen kids. MGM finally got Jane Edwards to sign a contract with them: after winning all those beauty contests. She and Dalton still haven't decided what they are going to do. I couldn't keep up with Helen Caudle. She joined the WAVES and has been traveling around the world. Well, that’s all the news I have—Oh! yes! you asked about Cookie Mochida—she’s a head nurse for the California Chamber of Commerce. COOKIE MOCHIDA Prophet LAST WILES ANDRES ee viel ia We, the Senior Class of Rowan Memorial Hospital, being of sound body and fairly stable minds, having seen signs and symptoms of our approaching graduation, do hereby deem it necessary to write our last will and testament. I. . To our Parents: For their loving caretanesidit aruer we leave our hopes, that our lives may be as successful, as their fondest dreams would have them to be. Il. To Rowan Memorial Hospital: We leave our deepest re- spect and admiration for three years of wonderful memories, and for helping us to achieve this “our Graduation Day”. Ill. To the Doctors: We leave our heartfelt gratitude for their untiring efforts in trying to increase our wisdom, and helping us to become good professional nurses. IV. Tothe Nurses: We leave our successors, the Junior Class, hoping that they will not walk off with the narcotic keys as many times as we did. I, Helen Caudle, do hereby leave my ability to stay up twenty hours out of twenty-four, without any untoward effects, to Ver- nonccd Crisco. I, Jane Edwards, leave my love for nursing to Colleen Smith, hoping that she will derive as much satisfaction from it as I have. I, Sonja Strait, bequeath my ability to leave care studies until the last minute to anyone who dares. I, Cookie Mochida, being a selfish person, have decided to take all my belongings with me! I, Ann Wright, will my ability to graduate from nursing in four years to Betty Goodman, who seems to need it. I, Pat Miller, leave my position as editor of the ‘White Cap” to the next editor in hopes that she will not have to struggle like aids I, Rachel Hedrick, will my ability to stay awake in Senior Seminars to anyone who can. I, Elsie Lankford, leave my love for First East to Marion Grant in hopes that she gets to work there as much as I| have. I, Marie Powers, bequeath the President's seat to the next Student Body President, with best wishes for a successful year. I, Lois Smith, leave my dirty shoes to Betty Sellers. Finally, we the Senior Class of 1957, do constitute and declare the’ Senior Glass of 1957 1o be the executers of this ounlastawall and testament. In witness whereof, we hereby subscribe our names this the tenth day of April, in the year of our Lord, one thousand nine hundred and fifty-seven. MARIE POWERS, Testator Witnesses: MRS. ANN WRIGHT MISS SONJA STRAIT IN @ RIG AS 5.@ galGHhsS Left to right! BETTY GOODMAN, BETTY SELLERS, COLLEEN SMITH Yes, being a Junior was the one desire that we had looked forward to since we entered training. That was the time we were relieved of our quiet studies, and most of all we were that much nearer to that white uniform and black band. We had taken one step more toward that glorious horizon and that sunset of tomorrow. “Now as we look forward to that coming day We find that tomorrow is now on its way, So being a Junior is only a step, To dreams of the future, and memories we've kept.” JUNIORS VERLYN ADKINS VANONDA CRISCO BETTY GOODMAN MARION GRANT BERT SELLERS COLLEEN SMITH Gi bom VAN OR EI@R RS Left to right: GWYN CULP, President; ANN DEAN, Vice-President; BETTY SMITH, Secretary; GAIL KEY, Treasurer. Climbing our stairway of dreams and fortunes, we the Fresh- man Class, grasp each rung on the ladder with pride and dig- nity, knowing we have taken another step toward a white uniform and diploma. How well we remember September 4, 1956, the day we en- tered Rowan School of Nursing; and the road has been rocky and rigid since; but our fun and laughter, our tears and sorrow have told us: Tomorrow has a goal worth seeking As a rainbow has a golden end, Holding our dreams of the future Enhancing them toward each bend. So as we climb our ladder upward And the time marches past, We'll grasp our treasures with dignity When we have reached our goal at last.” ANN GETTYS FRESHMAN GWYN CULP ANN DEAN ANN GETTYS NANCY GLOVER BETTY SMITH MARY STRIDER PAT OLY SON NELL WHITAKER LYNN WILES DENIOR SUPERLATIVES Cites! poles NKE@RD Wittiest MARIE POWERS SDENI@RS SUPER Ee Es Most Dependable PAT MILLER Best All-Around DON AgoiR Akl SIEINIOIN (SUPE VAI VAGS Friendliest RACHELSREDRICK Most Likely to Succeed COOKIE MOCHIDA SENI@Re SUPER ee w is ne ois ox EO) WM ase Ope) fy = i Most Professional JANE EDWARDS oe Up The Steps To Graduation State Boards Are Coming STUDENT, @@wieik Left to right: Marie Powers, Vanonda Crisco, Colleen Smith, Betty Keller, Pat Miller, Jane Mason, Cookie Mochida VESPERo CAR NAMES HOSPITALITY SHOP THE: DR NEW BULLETIN UP!
