Among these memories are known joys of living and serving with a satisfaction of work well done and something accomplished. There are the sorrows that seem to fade away as we cherish the thoughts of friends we made and the wonderful mo- ments of work and play we shared together. Here lies a hope that these memories of our experi- ences will inspire others to wear the white cap at its height. Girls, care will press you quite a bit Rest for awhile but never quit, Life is queer with its crooks and turns As everyone of us have learned, Many failures turn about That you could have won had you toughed it out, Never give up, though the race seems slow You might win with another blow, Success is failure turned round about. The golden rays of the sun no doubt. You never can tell how near the goal you are, You may be near or you may be far. Cling to the goal with all your bit It's when life seems toughest that you must not quit. God grant us power to keep on climbing From the plains so great to the heights sublime Grant us Thy peace and Thee let us follow, Until we reach our goal some bright tomorrow, Nellie Owens, Poet Motto: Not on the heights, but climbing. 15 CLASS SONG (Tune: Dannie Boy) Dear R, M, H. though we will soon be leaving you, Our hearts are bound by love so deep and strong, Dear R. M, H, let not this day be greiving you Our love will grow through all the ages long, Our hearts we leave to guard and cherish ever, And as we go, we know you will be true, The years that come devotion can n’er sever, They'll only serve to draw us closer still to you, Dear R, M, H, though we are sad at parting, A brightening gleam still shines with mistic ray. As out upon our many roads we're starting, The white cap still will brighten all our way, And may its presence e'er guide and inspire you E’en though today our pathway needs must part. May these fond mem‘ries ever linger near you, ToR. Little did we know then what the next three years held in store for us, Itwasthenextday, September I, that we really got started, We were first orientated to the nurses home which was to be our home for the next three years, and then to the dining room which seemed to be the most important place of all. The first six months we were preclinicals and this year found the studious pre-clinicals having classes in the nurses classroom, and board- ing the bus bound for Catawba College, and Boyden High School daily, Joan Holshouser decided during the first week that she didn't like our way of living and dropped out, Audrey Smith answered the call to matrimony and left us in October. Then came the time we were initiated into this great profession, This affair was held in connection with the Halloween party and since we lived through the initiation period, we decided to stat looking forward to the annual Christ- mas party which was a great success, after which we enjoyed a weeks vacation, In the mean- time our uniforms had come and we were making our debut on the various halls, Our next great loss was our educational director, Mrs, Christine B. Cox, who left us to join the armed forces, She was succeeded by Miss Mary E, Francis, The big event of the year was that of March 21, 1949, On this day we received our caps which was the first advancement in the nursing profession, Indeed it was a happy occasion but again one of our girls, Hilda Click, found it necessary to leave us, May 31, 1949, wehad finished our first year of classes and begun eight hour duty on the halls. During the summer months a few of our classmates we re sweating it out in the operating room. While others were on vacation, Peggy Simmerson left us quite unexpectedly and moved to an- other town, September marked another stage of our progression; we began our Junior year, Betty Hatley quit training and got married. And so we were left with only fifteen members of our original class, Again we were faced with a big loss, Mrs, Fred Shaw, our nursing arts instructor left us to join her husband in Virginia, To show our appreciation we gave a party in her honor on the lawn of the nurses home, She was succeeded by Miss Rebeka Conrad, Our junior year was Spent in the usual routine of studies, ocassional parties etc. April 17, the first of our class to go on affiliation left. Three of us departed in the wee hours of the morning for Washington and a three months stay at Children's Hospital where we were engaged in the nursing of little ones”, in June we sponsered a formal dance honoring the seniors, It was held at the Country Club and fun was had by all, September I, 1950,,, At last we had become seniors and had attained the coveted black bands for our caps. We really felt our importance at Rowan then. Little did we dream that we would loose yet some students our last year, Marriage took its toll and left us with eleven to graduate, First to quit was Betty Crisco, then Arnella Carter, Soon to follow was Millie Bauer and Faye Trexler all answering the call to Matrimony, 22 Christmas Eve found six of us leaving for Torrance, Pennsylvania’ to study psychiatry, This was the first time students had ever affiliated from this school for psychiatry and needless to say it was a new experience for us, After returning from affiliations, the entire class was kept busy toward the production of The White Cap with the completion of the annual we still had to look forward to the big event of our training, August 16, 1951, we were to receive the long awaited pin and peice of parch- ment that was our diploma and meant that we had fi nished three long years of study, work, and play. Now we were graduate nurses and eligible to wear the white uniform of our chosen pro- ression, Ruth Cope Historian 23 State: North Carolina County: Rowan Hospital: Rowan Memorial We, the class of 1951, being of sound mind and strong body, realizing the eminence of our departure from Rowan Memorial Hospital, and having in our possession certain valuable prop- erties, do hereby publish this our last will and testament; hereby declaring all previous doc- uments null and void, ARTICLE I 1, To the Rowan Memorial Hospital School of Nursing our appreciation for making it pos- sible for us to obtain our profession, 2. I do seal this the last will and testament of the 1951 Class of the Ro- wan Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Testator, Sara Lou Amburn PROPHECY May 24, 1961 Dear Diary, I have so much to tell you I don't really know where to begin. Perhaps I should start at the obvious place, the beginning, As the story goes I have just returned from a much needed and long deserved vacation, The past month has been the most exciting and enjoyable thirty days of my life for I renewed old acquaintances and fellowshiped with my former classmates of dear ole Rowan Memorial, We boarded the plane in Charlotte, N.C,, and to our surprise found that the pilot was the husband of a classmate. Mary Margaret Spivey had married a former air force pilot and he was now flying commercially. He told us that Margaret is director of nurses at Memorial Hospital inCharlotte, Ofcourse she has to divide her time between the hospital and her small daughter. It's hard to realize how time passes so rapidly, One of our stops was in Atlantic City, N. J. where our own Ruth Cope was in THE beauty contest. Naturally we stayed for the coronation and nearly bursted with pride when Miss Cope was crowned Miss America of 1961. You should have seen her strut her stuff down the board walk and pass the reviewing stand, She snowed all the judges as usual and police had to be called in to quell the riot as she made her way over to say hello to us, We arrived in New York just in time to see Ruthe Robbins ready to depart aboard one of the latest luxury liners bound for the Orient, She had realized a long dreamed of desire and had prepared herself to be a missionary. She was still wondering how she ever got through nurses’ training and college but as she stated: It all goes to show you that miracles do still happen, While we were standing on the pier talking, announcement was made that the ship was ready tosail and Robbie (same old Robbie) became frantic as she began to fumble in her purse for her ticket. Horrified we watched asthe gang plank was raised and Robbie remained on the pier with tears in her eyes and still searching desperately for the lost ticket. Suddenly amid the debris which cluttered her bag she found the piece of paper that was her passport. She began to holler and they lowered the gang plank to allow her to get aboard and as the ship steamed away from the shore, Robbie's smiling face could be seen for quite a distance. We had heard that Faye Trexler was in Detroit, so since we were wanting a new car we de- cided to kill two birds with one stone and visit with her and make our purchase, The car was bought first and we drove up to her former residence to surprise her, however we received the surprise. Her landlady reported that Miss Trexler had alsobecame a missionary and had left her forwarding address as: Stout Memorial Hospital, Wuchowl, China. She also said that she heard from her frequently and that she was in love with her work. Who knows, perhaps Faye and Rob- bie will get together with their foreign charges, Small world you know. Of course we were disappointed that we were unable to visit with her but also delighted with her success in her work, Naturally we were in love with our new car and continued our homeward trip on the ground. Our next stop was in Pennsylvania to visit at Torrance State Hospital. We had affiliated 26 there as students. To our surprise we found that Nellie Owens was nursing there and had been placed in charge of McKinnis Infirmary. She had loved her work there as a student but we never dreamed that Nellie would ever venture that far away from Coleemee, While there we haddinnerin the K,C. building and were, with Nellie, reminiscing with friends, when Evaline King came in, She too had chosen the field of psychiatry and was assistant to Miss Kutz, the director of nurses, Doing all right for herself, huh? with Vangie's entrance everyone began talking at once and such boisterousness was never equalled in the nurses‘ home at Rowan, Why, Mrs, Major would have dropped her teeth if all that noise had occurred at Rowan, Needless to say we could hardly get away but our time was getting shorter so although it tore our hearts out to do so we said our goodbyes. In Washington, we went immediately to Children's Hospital to see Ruby Poteat, Margaret Daniel and Robbie Thompson, Thisschool had also been one of our affiliations in training days. Ruby and Robbie were working in surgery and Margaret was working on one of the sew segreoated wards, Naturally she would be working directly with the children because even she was always a big baby at heart, The new car was wonderful and so we came back across country. The trip was delightful; such beauty could never be equalled as we saw the eresplendent sun sink into the horizon over the Blue Ridge Moutains of Virginia, It meant we were ending a glorious vacation and would soon be back in North Carolina and home. Only afew of our fomrer classmates remained in our home state, To finish our trip we went by to see Sara Amburn, She was living at home in Boonville and nursing at Elkin, She was bubbling over with plans for her forth coming marriage. We were thrilled with the news and listened attentively to her plans. Wishing her much success, happiness, and best wishes we de- parted to return to our alma mater. Of course we will be back for the big event in Boonville though. Our last stop was at Rowan Memorial Hospital, -a place we all held dear to our hearts for it brought back so many memories, It was here that we saw the last of our class of 51, Ida Mc- Neill was still here as floor supervisor on the second floor. The old building had changed quite a bit since we had left. A brand new wing had been added, Of course it was under construc - tion when we had graduated but most of us had not seen the completed structure, It was a beau- ty -no doubt, Yes, we really had a vacation and now my husband and I are returning to our home ina nearby town where he is engaged in the administration of a mortuary establishment, I am still working but in Statesville at the Long's Hospital where I have charge of the premature nursery, So ended an interesting and most enjoyed vacation, Colleen Nelson Prophet 27 oe SRS ee ES : ee JUNIORS eh IT Millie Clark Marie Martin Secretary - Treasurer Margaret Lester Vice President President Linda Blalock Millie Clark Charlotte Crisco Margaret Lester JUNIORS © Nell Lopp Marlene Lowder Marie Martin Shirley Ragan Ann Smith Doris Watson 30 31 FRESHMEN Lorene Trexler Betty Allman Ethel Nifong President Vice President Secretary - Treasurer Betty Allman Loretta Beck JoAnne Blackwelder Blanche Cox Ida McLamb Ethel Nifong Jean Raden Lorene Trexler Atrice Rich 32 ACTIVITIES WHITE CAP STAFF FIRST ROW, left to right: Colleen Nelson, Art Editor; Ruby Poteat, Associate Business Manager; Margaret Daniel, Associate Business Manager; Robbie Thompson, Secretary; Margaret Spivey, Assistant Editor; Evaline King, Art Editor; Sara Lou Amburn, Testator, Typist; Ruthe Robbins, Editor-in-chief, SECOND ROW: Ruth Cope, Historian; Nell Owens, Poet; Faye Trexler, Bus- iness Manager, (Not pictured, Ida McNeill, Picture Editor, ) 34 Ruthe Robbins Marlene Lowder Robbie Thompson President Secretary Vice President STUDENT COUNCIL LEFT TO RIGHT: Miss Mary E, Francis, faculty advisor; Ruthe Robbins, Miss Edna Howard, Director; Betty Allman, Freshman class representative, Marlene Lowder; Margie Lester, Junior class representative; and Ida McNeill, Senior class representative.
