J,-J il ROWAN BEFORE FRAMMING R0 AN 1945-1975 Named for V ice Admiral Stephen Clegg ROWAN USS ROWAN is the fourth ship to bear the name covering more than seventy years of naval history. The present ROWAN, a 710-Class, FRAM-I destroy- er, was commissioned 31 March 1945 at Todd Naval Shipyard, Seattle, Washington. She served admira- bly through her first years and during her operations in the Korean conflict. From July 1963 through May 1964, ROWAN un- derwent extensive modernization at the Phila- delphia Naval Shipyard, emerging with the latest anti-submarine weapons-the anti-submarine rock- et LASROCJ and the drone anti-submarine helicopter LDASHJ, the latter having since been removed. In addition to ASROC, ROWAN is armed with two 5-inch! 38 caliber, twin gun mounts and six torpedo tubes. ROWAN's primary mission is anti-submarine warfare but ROWAN can also perform anti-air War- fare, escort and shore bombardment functions. ROWAN made deployments to the Western Pa- ? 7 cific for duty with the U. S. SEVENTH Fleet from 1965 through 1971, participating in fast aircraft car- rier task force operations, junk surveillance and shore bombardment in support of the U.S. effort in Vietnam. In October 1971, ROWAN, as a member of De- stroyer Squadron FIFTEEN, changed her homeport from San Diego, California to Yokosuka, Japan. R0- WAN continued to perform extensively in escort and naval gunfire support roles throughout the Vietnam conflict. During April and May of 1975, ROWAN per- formed extensively in support of Frequent Windy, the evacuation of Americans and Vietnamese ref- ugees from South Vietnam. The ROWAN crew per- formed engineering repair on craft of approximately 100 Vietnamese refugees stranded at sea while flee- ing to Maylaysia. In addition, ROWAN supplied the refugees with food, medicine, Water, fuel and naviga- tion equipment.
