s uk -s -g USS ROWAN lDD 782l is the fourth ship of the US, Navy to hear the name of Vice Admiral Stephen Clegg ROWAN. An imi- grant from Ireland at age 10, Stephen RONVAN served as a Midshipmen in USS VINCENNES when it made the first round the world cruise by a U.S. Man-O-War 1826-1830. As a Lieutenant during the war with Mexico he led the landing force which occupied San Diego and Raised the first American flag over this now great naval base in 1846. Later, in command of the federal ship PAWNEE, he fought what is considered to he the first naval action of the Civil War. Throughout the rest of his career ROWAN served his country with distinction in com- mand of several ships, squadrons, and shore stations. He died in 1890, a year after his retirement. This ship and her three for- bearers have carried his name proudly through over seventy years of naval history.
