Green Jr. We have grown in a world of darkness bumping into obstacles along our way. But we were blessed on December 26 by the birth of John H. Green, Jr., fondly known by all as Johnny Green . Johnny grew up as most normal kids do, but he possessed something extra-the ability to bring joy to all who came in contact with him. Johnny had the unique ability to play with children at the age of 20. He appreciated the counsel and wisdom of those who were older, and enjoyed the wholesome competition of his peers. Johnny gave a hundred percent to any task that became his to carry out. His philosophy seems to have been, if it is worth doing at all, it is worthy of my best effort. This is reflected in everything he did throughout his life. Those of us who are left might do well to follow his example. As a brother and a son, John was an excellent family member. An obedient son to a mother and father who guided him and loved him, and a loving brother with whom I could share dreams and aspirations. Johnny's friends came from all walks of life-from Little League teammates, Sunday School class ushers at church, through his high school teachers and coaches, to the professors, coaches and teammates at Glassboro State College. To all who Johnny touched in his small way, we will always remember him for the joy and love he placed in our minds and hearts. My brother has done the work God needed him to do. He is not gone: he is there among us and will always be. l believe this with all my heart. -Jeffrey Green Johnny Green died on December 8, 1977, several weeks after sustaining an injury during a football game against Montclair State College on November 11. ll fl . . . Johnny was never just a number, either on the field or off. He was an important part of our college community, a gentleman, a man of integrity, a hard competitor who led by example. Johnny's death leaves a void on this campus, not only on the athletic field, but everywhere. Good men are valued and we have lost a man of great value . . . -Dr. Mark Chamberlain, President Glassboro State College tw ,Q-Q1-A f I - ,l'V' 1.,A 1 f . The Profs placed seven runners on the NJSCAC team this season. Besides Kruse, Harry Frezza, Gary Leaman, Steve Wayne, Tavo Rivera, and Derick Adamson were also named. In championship action the Profs finished second to Rutgers at Homdel Park, and second to Iona at Van Cortlandt Park in New York. In the NCAA Mideast qualifying meet the Profs finished fourth to enable them to travel to Illinois to compete in the NCAA Division lll Nationals. ln the meet at Van Cortlandt Park Kruse set a new record for the five mile run, breaking the old mark which was held since 1970. He was clocked at 25:04. With all this talk about NCAA Championship meets the Profs captured their fifth straight conference and established a new conference record by winning 23 consecutive NJSCAC meets. . K Hockey The women's field hockey team finished up 5-9-1 this season, as the Profs had only four seniors on the squad. Coach Mary Rice had hoped that co-captains Bonnie Glaser and Sherri Pepowski could inspire a rather young team. The Profs started out well winning their first three out of four games. They won impressively over highly rated Penn and Princeton. But due to the lack of varsity experience of the underclassmen, the Profs couldn't put it together the rest of the year. Their defense played well, but the offense didn't show much punch when it was needed. The Profs will be looking forward to next year when the underclassmen have some varsity experience under their belt. After capturing the N.J.S.C.A.C. title for the last four seasons, the Montclair State Indians were able to defeat the Profs on opening day 31-15 and go on to capture the conference. The West Chester game was played in the memory of John Green, who suffered a fatal injury in the last game of the 77 season. During halftime of the West Chester game, the Profs retired Green's number and presented his jersey to his parents. Jerry Ragonese made a very emotional speech which left the crowd in silence and him in tears. The Profs finished up the season by defeating Central Conn. 115-14l, Kean 133-Ol, and William Paterson 149-225. Herb Nielo, the Delaware Valley's leading passer a year ago, had his best day of the season hitting on 14 of 22 passes for 315 yards. Dino Hall followed up that performance in the last game of the season by setting two Prof records. He ran 255 yards in the game breaking the old 235 set by Robbie Reid. Hall also ran for 1330 yards for the year also eclipsing a record which was held by Reid. Next season Coach Wacker will have to look ahead to a young squad. Between the seniors and the upcoming freshmen look for the Profs to have another successful year in 79. 147 O i a 1. I f --qw: IH Dan Gilmore has verbally abused officials as well as directing temperamental outbursts towards his own players. But you can't argue with a winning coach, as the Profs saw playoff action for the first time. The soccer team only had three starters returning this season, and it was supposed to be a rebuilding year. Gilmore led the team to their best finish ever with a 12-4-1 record, in only his third year at the helm. At one point in the season they won five games in a row outscoring their opponents 20-1, as senior goalie Craig Campbell, compiled over 20 consecutive scoreless quarters. Making the playoffs for the first time, the Profs fell to Union College 4-O in the opening round. The N.C.A.A. Division lll New York-New Jersey Regionals were held in Schenectedy, N.Y. The Profs were led this season by leading scorer Tony Procopio, as he set a new assist record. Also leading the offensive charge were Tom Moffit and Freshmen stand-outs Tony O'Connor, and Pt. Pleasent graduates Tim Dempsey, and Scott Salisbury. With a team filled with a lot of underclassmen who saw plenty of action this year, the future looks very bright for Glassboro State Soccer. 149 Q .. After all, the freshman will decide what the varsity team will look like in a couple of years from now. The Profs will find it difficult to improve on last seasons performance as they won the conference title and beat Marietta in the World Series for Division lll. The Profs will be losing pitcher Bob Pfeffer and Dino Hall who stole over 40 bases. Hall has already played four years of varsity ball, thus making him ineligible for play this year. They will have a good portion of their team back from last year, led by the heavy bats of Frank Albano, Brendan Rosenberg, and Chick Peale as they combined for a solid .379 average. Rosenberg led the Prof offense in home runs, FlBI's, and scoring. Norm Charlesworth, Matt McArow, and Bud Goebel will lead the pitching staff. Goebel, a sophomore last year, had a very good season. lnfielders Flalph Wendell, and Don DeJoseph will beef up the already potent offense. 127 x is .,,.,1 r ,ZW-' ,, ,aj 17.3 fa ,gffqf-N4 -.f,,,L ,, '24 ' '1- ?': ,i FOV . , ff - ,. ,, 4130,-, 25,6 Luf- V . 6, 4 'I 4 u v ls ' 8. . Like any new experience, it will take the freshmen a couple of months to get used to the environment. They listened to welcoming speeches to put their minds at ease. Buying knick-knacks to add finishing touches to their rooms also filled up much of the week. Turning to more important things they received their l.D. cards and meal tickets. Afterwards a make-shift assembly line was formed in the ballroom in an effort to recruit the freshmen for different groups, clubs, fraternities and sororities. Paradise entertained during the week trying to get everybody to socialize. Smokey and the Bandit highlighted the movie screen and a hypnotist left most of the freshmen aghast with his performance. Mr. Fox who has played on every important organ in the country, is the first American organist to play a paid admission concert at Carnegie Hall as well as being the first to play a solo organ recital at Lincoln Center. The organ which is a three manual, 53 rank instrument, has a moveable console which was played from the center of the stage. lts pipes are set in two large chambers located on each side of the auditorium. When those relaxing melodies float through the pipes, it feels as though you were on the keyboard yourself. With every selection he played the atmosphere changed in mood and tempo. Most of his selections were from Bach, his favorite composer. Included in the selections were A Surprise which in result was the theme of The Sting. Just before intermission he had the audience on their feet singing O Come All Ye Faithful. The concert ended with three encores, the last of which was the Star Spangled Banner, and a standing ovation followed. Dizzy Gillespie, world-renowned jazz trumpeter, graced the stage of the Wilson Concert Hall on Sunday night October 22. He charmed the audience with his broad sense of humor and musical know-how as his musical selections ranged from favorites which were on his newly released album. As far as the style is concerned, one could compare him to B. B. King. Dizzy makes his trumpet speak much in the same way that King makes his guitar taIk . He showed the sharp clear sound that jazz musicians strive for. He has been associated with such greats as Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald and Billy Eckstein. His honors range from Musician of the year Award to a concert presented by the Smithsonian Institutes Jazz Series. .ry sl X S V if ,Q 4. . x Dizzy Gillespie xi' Bill Cosby and Helen Schneider lit up Esby in a sell-out evening of music and comedy December 3. Berstein talked unfavorably about how some recent court decisions are infringing on a person's rights in the First Amendment. He told us in his opinion what makes a good journalist. Berstein also questioned whether or not the media has the ability to report on itself adequately. These among other thoughts from Berstein highlighted his 40 minute lecture.
